And it failed safety inspection haha. Not my first Buell, but it's my first tuber! I have an XB12STT next to it in the garage.

I need to track down a horn and front brake lever light switch.

Also, I have a small oil leak off the line in the rear. It came with the original black tank which needs repainted, and the pulleys to put back to belt, which I think is worth doing.

Any suggested maintenance/things to look over?

I would like to do XB wheels, XB front end, and M2/X1 swingarm.

Saw that on CL. Congrats on the purchase! I have you covered on the XB conversion. PM me when you are ready. I have the stem and rear spacers ready to go.

I disassembled my front brake switch and repaired it - consider giving it a try before buying a new one.

I have an aluminum swingarm and mount for you. Just PM me.

Also check with Hd to see what warrenty stuff has not been completed. Looks like your battery is in the old upright layout may be more and that all might be free!!

S1owner, they will do warranty/recalls on a 1996 in 2017? That’s incredible!

Yes as long as they can get the parts they will perform the warranty work!
My guess is previous owner replaced the shock on their own as hd would have done all open work at that time.

I have looked all over this frame and can’t find the horn. Where is it normally located?

Warranty coverage is somewhat different than recalls, it expires at the end of the OE warranty period, and product programs usually expire after two years. But, any recalls that may still may be open, can still be performed.

Yes recalls not warranties!

Your horn is not on its side by the key it is under the tank in the middle. You need to remove the tank to get to it. It may just need cleaned and rattled a little. Thats where mine was.
If you buy a new one get a xb horn they are louder then the s1 please move horn.

Nice looking bike! I also had to rebuild my front brake switch. Very quick and easy, just send down the contact points while your in there and use some dielectric grease.

I pulled the tank and the wire was electrical taped into place without a horn.

I went and bought a universal horn and installed it. All good now and ready for my safety reinspection.

Thanks for your help!

Nice score, I'm jealous of the seat! Mikuni carb and forcewinder intake is a nice setup. My horn is also in the same location as red93stang but my bike is also s1w so the older s1 might have it in a different spot?

Some have replaced the horn-shaped horn with the pancake ones found on newer Buells and most Jap bikes.
It's easier to hide.
They could have stashed it under the flyscreen like an XB.

Unless they just clipped the wires and put one of those stickers on that says
"Horn broken, watch for finger"

That's interesting. I never knew some had their horns mounted in different positions. I never thought anything about mine, but now I feel like every time I see it sticking out down there I'm gonna be temped to get one to mount under the tank where you can't see it. For how big it is... I've also been tempted to try to find a smaller airhorn the mount in the same place. It'd be a bit more useful than what's there.

"Nice score, I'm jealous of the seat!"

Don't be too jealous. My bike came with one of those, the stock seat was notably more comfortable, even if the corbin might look a little nicer.

I didn't think it was possible to find a more uncomfortable seat than the stock S1 seat. Mine is terrible. Corbin's have always been rock hard, but that at least distributes your weight a little. This soft stocker I have just slides you right back to the same uncomfortable position no matter how much you shift around.

I have been watching for a cheap stock seat to reshape/refoam or a reasonably priced Corbin for over a year and haven't had any luck.

It's not the most comfortable seat... but I don't think it's really all that bad. I tend to have a habit of scooting as forward as I can up to the tank. I thought the short distance from the seat to the bars on my old XB9S was great, and after that I had a supermoto where I literally had nothing but a gas cap between my seat and the bars, which was perfect to be able to move as far forward as I wanted.

The hard seat wasn't the issue, I had the low seat for the XB9S which was also hard as a rock, and I thought it was really comfortable. The Corbin just had sharp edges that dug into my thighs. The other issue was how flat and smooth it was. Any time I'd pull away from a stop sign at anything above a slow pace, all of my energy was put towards keeping myself from sliding to the back of the seat. In fairness, the seat could be up to 20 years old at this point. It might've had more grip at the beginning of it's life, and has just been worn smooth by 2 decades of peoples butts sliding around on it.

The stock seat lets me sit right up by the tank and keeps me firmly planted no matter what I'm doing.

Seats are definitely hard to come by. I really wanted to find a twintail to protect me from rain water a bit better, but after a year of looking and finding nothing but $300-400 seats(not including the bodywork), I gave up and just accepted the rain splatter on my backpack. It's no where near as bad as the XB was. I ended up recently trading my Corbin seat for a stock exhaust and airbox. I was hesitant to let it go for a while, but I'll be happier with a quiet exhaust than I was with the fancy looking seat.

I’m OK with what the seat is for what the bike is. I don’t see myself spending days and days of riding on this thing. That’s what the XB12STT is for. :-)

My blinker controls on the S1 are a little sticky. What would you suggest? Rebuild them or buy a new set of controls?

Mine were the same when I got them, I rebuilt them. It was pretty easy to do, and definitely worth a try before you consider buying new ones, which honestly.... will also be 20 years old and would likely need a rebuild as well(same problem I'm dealing with on my front master cylinder).

I did eventually buy a new set of controls as a future upgrade, but they come with the need to splice all the wires and getting new throttle cables, so it's not a simple plug and play swap.

Just get some dielectric great, pull them apart, lightly sand down the contact points, and put them back together. It's a good chance to clean out the cobwebs, which I can almost guarantee have also collected in there...
