I replaced my clutch and if I shift without pulling in the clutch, all works great. However, sometimes when I do use the clutch when shifting from 1st to 2nd and push it hard, when I release the clutch lever and a second later I get a jerk as the clutch engages. I am going to replace the clutch cable with a new OEM clutch cable from Lance and adjust. I am running 20W50 Valvoline dino. See what happens. Any ideas

Is the clutch engaging then letting go and jerking as it catches up, or you release the cable, get nothing for a second, THEN it jerks as it finally engages?

Does it only do it from 1st to 2nd gear? downshifting too or only upshifting?

If you just replaced your clutch, it may just need to be readjusted.
Perhaps the little ball ramp thing is pulled too far?
did you follow the book carefully when putting it back together?

I noticed it after a cable change - aftermarket. Then I put new clutch plates in.

Generally only see this when going from 1st to second.

Clutch cable needs oil or cable is fraying.

Did you make sure the cable pulled smoothly through the housing before you put it on the bike? It *sounds like* the cable is getting hung up in the housing. Odd that it's only in 1st gear. When you release the clutch lever does the tension feel normal, or is there still a bunch of play in the lever, and then when the clutch jerks, the lever snaps itself tight too?

Something definitely sounds out of place with the cable. I'd try disconnecting it from the engine, pulling the lever and seeing if the cable is moving normally. If it is, try reconnecting and readjusting everything starting from the beginning.

Might you have dropped one of the ramp balls into the primary case? It will work with two, but not well.

Is that even possible with an EVO? I know I have dropped my balls in the old ironhead.
