As my tach was not running right it would go up and down in an erratic mode, got a new speed sensor and seemed to be good, but it's back to acting strange I could be cruising at 60 m/h and suddenly it shows 80-40-0-80....... and don't know where the problem is, tried while riding to wiggle mart the steer the cables but no change at all. Any suggestions about what I can do to trace down this problem?

Clean metal shavings from speed sensor.

Sorry...speed sensor doesn't have anything to do with tach. I read 'speed sensor' and immediately forgot you were talking about an erratic tach.

Tach runs off if a single wire coming from the coil to the tach. The other wires are for tach light and ground. Either the tach needs replaced ir the wire is shorting out somewhere

I changed the tach as I have a spare one, so it must be the wires some where.

Per my '01 X-1 service manual, the tach gets its info from the ECM, pink wire at pin 12 in the black connector. The tach is grounded from the black wire on the back of the tach.

Since another known good tach didn't solve the issue, might do to check the pink wire from the ECM to the tach, and the black wire from the tach to ground. My first suspect would be the connector from the instrument cluster to the main harness around the steering stem.

Hope this helps, Dave

Also to add that same pink wire gets its signal from the coil.

To confirm S1owner, I had this same problem year ago. I noticed the back of my tach was cracked so I removed it and checked the pink wire. everything was fine.

Turns out the pick up wire on the coil was falling apart. Replaced the connector and problem solved.

As buells are, the spedo after 5 stated to play around up and down, 10 miles doing it and the 40 miles left it was working fine.
