I picked up a 2000 x1 but the tail has seen some better days. What kind of coating is on it and can it be repaired and repainted or does it have to be stripped and buffed?

It's clear powder coat. It can be stripped or sanded off and the aluminum polished, or you can have it recoated. They'll bake it off before recoating. If you want to polish it, you'll need to use a stripper that can strip powder coat. Look for aircraft stripper.

They made them with and without clear coat. I can't remember when the change over happened.

They make a pretty cool powder coat that is called polished aluminum!

All X1 tails were powdercoated. The X1 Millennium in a silver, of course. But the 'standard' X1's were also always powdercoated, with a clear powdercoat. Initial production was a glossy clear powdercoat that caused difficulties in production due to outgassing which resulted in high scrap rates and requiring rework operations. At some point, which I don't remember exactly when either, the powdercoating turned to a more matte/natural looking clear. The later matte/natural looking clear cured the production/processing issues and was, ironically, what Erik wanted all along.

Is it the same sort of finish as the swingarms? Mine is corroding under and flaking off.

The swingarms were also powdercoated but, IIRC, they were Harley's bead blast silver.

If my memory is correct, some H-D touch up paint should allow you to get it back to like new.

Were all of the swingarms powdercoated, or just some of them?

I have one in a box in the garage, I'll probably mount it as is for now, but I'd like to clean it up eventually.

All the 99-02 tuber swingarms were powdercoated. I sanded mine down and recoated. Much easier to keep clean. The stock finish was pretty coarse.
