A piece of small soft alloy between the gear and bottom of engine case ,did the trick for me once.
But be careful and take it slow ,you don't want to break any teeth off!

thanks a million Jim (aka ODD) for loaning me your pinion locking tool. I am amazed by the willingness to help on this forum. It is much appreciated. More progress and pics to follow later this weekend.

I am awaiting one more shipment (the exhaust gaskets). it should come tomorrow and I will wrap up this little project and hopefully ride next week.

Almost back together. What's this hose supposed to go to? It exits the back of the crankcase. It is pretty long and was just coiled up on top of crankcase without connecting to anything on other end?

Tranny breather. Open end goes up by the top of the oil tank. It doesn't connect to anything.

Yes, this is trans breather hose. Tie it down along the frame with ty-raps and run out toward the back and past the saddlebag framing, ending at the license plate area.

Run it as high as you can and place it where any sludge released will not hit your tire. This is the vent hose that will tell you if your main oil seal has blown by blowing slime after the engine oil pressurizes the primary case.
