Evening All,
Well I bought a new tank for my RS1200 from www.airtech-streamlining.com for a lot of money and it does not fit. The tank is just too narrow at the back by over an inch. The "skirt" at the back does not flair out as much as my original. If it was too wide, no problem, but too narrow will never fit! Thought about cutting the Right side to clear the rear head but that would be a three inch cut up the side!
I am trying to work with them to resolve this and would like to ask the community to assist in answering questions.
My questions are:
* Is the 1989 RS1200 tank different some how from the later RS1200 tanks?
* Any suggestions for a fix?

The good news is that we, among Badwebbers, have many resources and bikes from which to take measurements.

I think you have taken the right approach by offering to lend knowledge and support to getting it right.

We know there is, and will continue to be, a market for replacement tanks.

I think the general issue I've seen with people replacing bodywork parts on these bikes, is that nothing is ever exactly the same. People have had problems matching up pieces and getting them to fit together perfectly, part of the *charm* of owning a hand built bike.

That certainly sucks!!

I has a similar issue with them, quality sucks, I forced them to take it back with the threat of disputing the charge.

I know this does not help you...sorry ((

You think it will soften if you roast it with a hair dryer?
Like heat it up, spread it out a bit and then cool it down?

>>edit...
Nevermind I didn't see that it had a huge gap in the back.

Not that you want to have to modify a new part, but being unfamiliar with these tanks are all of the spots where it is not correct in dry parts of the tank? If so you could do some fiberglass work, it is pretty easy to work with if a bit messy though.

There is a guy on the Chop Cult forum, goes by Dragstews, had/has the same problem.
And this to say about it, dunno if he figured it out.

Their tank was pure "JUNK" ....

I had at least 12 other people that are Hot-Rod boys come and look at it.... Not only did it not fit but was made with wrong fittings, no threads in the vent screw and being so thin of glass at the bottom of the tank...

They also lied to me saying that the RS tanks was made from the OG mold that Buell used.... That was complete Bullshit .... They made the mold from an existing tank...

It had the decals sticking up from the tank...

Those Boys are a sorry excuse for cheating, stealing and making a product that can't even be used...

I do have a $715 wall clock now...

Airtech bodywork has always been iffy, and the owner has a bit of a temper--here is a pic of my bike on his website-- I called him out for using it without my permission, too funny!!~

Finally got some time to work on the 1991 RS tank.
Started with small carbides in the wider "fill" areas.

Discovered a bare hacksaw blade and some foam tube worked perfectly on the very thin areas!

It's open!!!!!

Shouldn't one of these fittings(main & reserve) have a 1-2" tube for the main?

Close-up of the ethanol carnage.

Next step is source a coating material.

Morning All,
Finally I can report status of my new tank for my RS1200 from http://www.airtech-streamlining.com.
I have a tank which fits and yes it took some time. In short:
* From indications that the ignition was not mounted on the tank and the reserve switch was at a angle, I say their mold was from a 1991 or later RS/RSS1200.
* That tank was far too narrow to fit my 1989 RS1200, Walt suggested, and I agreed, to send them my tank to make a mold from.
* Next tank nearly fit, but not quite. Sent it back to be reworked and now I have a tank which fits.
* Now I need to take photos to post, complete cutting mounting holes, leak test, (I do not expect leaks as the tank has an epoxy fuel proof lining), and go for a ride!

Hello All:
Photos of the fit and finish of my new tank. Note decided to use their filler cap and the tank vent at the top. They will cut stock size filler so you can use your original hardware!
I am thrilled to have it.
* Fit about as perfect as anything hand made could be expected to fit.
* Also I drilled the screw holes, and yes I did cut the cutouts under the side panels just a little too high.
* Also, if you notice, the right side looks to fit about 1/4" too far back where it meets the faring. Well, so did the original tank, so no problem there.

I am thrilled to have it!
Now to complete fitting assembly, fuel up and ride.

THIS is exciting . . . .this has been the "holy grail" of RS/RSS maintenance . . . you may be on the track to a solution.

It looks great !

Well done.

So is the company now offering this tank as a better fit than what they had, or is this just a one off tank?

Your answer is spread throughout the thread, so I will summarize here.
* Short answer is, I am sure they will build from my 1989 RS1200 mold for anyone who wants it.

* They built me a tank from a mold they had. Because the reserve switch is at an angle and the ignition switch was not mounted to the tank, I figure it was from a 1991 or later RSS1200.
* It was too narrow at the back to fit.
* Additionally I did not know to ask for a completely stock configuration.
* The first tank came with their filler cap molded into the tank, fuel fittings one size larger, (remember they build items for racers), and a tank vent out the bottom.
* They asked me to send my tank to mold from and I did.
* I asked for stock size fuel fittings, tank vent at the top, and their fuel filler molded in.
* They will leave a hole in the top for the stock hardware if you like.
* Remember these are hand built for each customer so some customization is possible.

* I have a question for Badwebers concerning the shape. Did it change over time, or is the RSS1200 tank different from the RS1200 tank? Does someone out there know?

You may want to create a new thread and reference this one, since it's been archived. Not many folks make it down this far.

Same tank between the RS and RSS. Only possible 'differences' would be due to original BMC tooling. I doubt the issues seen with S2's RTM produced bodywork - of having multiple iterations of tooling - existed with the RS/RSS low production volumes.

any Excalibur issues?

Good point! Unfortunately that was before my time. When I started back in '91 the body shop was open in Mukwonago and all bodywork was manufactured - and painted - there. Some of the staff - if I recall - came from Excalibur. Maybe the tooling followed? Heck, I can't even remember when parts were first made by RTM (Resin Transfer Molding). I want to say that the RS/RSS bikes were - at least when I started - but that is one data point that seems to have been expelled from my memory...

Hello Johnod,
All is great with the tank. Scroll up on the thread and you will see my RS1200 with its new tank. Love it! Have put about 400 miles on it since the new tank.
Great to be back on 'Old Blue".

That's great, glad to hear it all worked out. Also to see a source for the tanks now.

I don't have an RS, but maybe some day, an RSS would be even better.

Morning Johnod,
Love my RS1200 for short rides. For long rides cross country I prefer my S3.
I was able to test ride an RSS1200 which was for sale around here. Funny that I fit better on the RSS1200. Seat back is a little further back which gave my legs just a little more room at the knee pads.
Would love to have had that RSS1200 but he wanted $10,000. Paint was in real bad shape, gas cap would not come off, some modifications, but at least it ran good.
Note; Have not seen an RS/RSS1200 sell for more than $5000.00. Believe mine is worth $10,000. but will never get it, so grab one if you can!

I don't think I've seen an RSS for sale, a few RS's but that's about it. I may need to sell a couple of bikes before I add another.
Don't want to get SWMBO mad at me.

Hello all. Very interested to say the least. I have mailed these people about a new tank for a 91 RS1200. Are they trust worthy now? Hopefully, they have the size issues under control. It strikes me that a good idea would be to buy a complete set of body work rather than just the tank (fairing excluded) to get the best chance of a decent fit?

Thanks.
