So i got a 1999 S3 and it came with a carbon exhaust on it. I assumed it was D&D but I don't think it is now. Can someone tell me what it is?

Nice! As I recall, Borla was good for longevity as well.

What's holding up the front end of the muffler? Looks like just a little spring.

you are correct, only a little spring. When you mentioned that, I dug down a little deeper in the forum. Sounds like maybe the early Borla's didn't use a front mount? An updated version did at a later date?

So, that got me digging a little further and I found the S1001.01A1 exhaust hanger update from Buell. Should I invest in one? Mine clearly doesn't have this update with the new Regulator mount and the "Y" hanger. Where is a good place to buy one? Ebay has several. I suppose I will call the local Harley Dealer and see if they have any laying around.

Yes get the mount and use it. Lance at St Paul HD has them and sells on ebay and is on here as Lance651.
I would suggest a type of race shoe for the hanger mount. Dean Adams makes a nice one

That looks like a Borla but they did have a front mount and welded on mount on the rear. We sold them back in the late 90's but most of them broke the mounts off an had to keep replacing them until they quit making them.

OK, thanks for all the info. So I am going to order the updated Buell exhaust hanger number s10001.01a1. I checked with St Paul and a few other places and Surdyke seems to have it the cheapest ($20 cheaper than all the others).

Now I am kicking around the idea of selling this Borla and getting a supertrapp or possibly an exhuast from Dean Adams. I want something that will be durable and fairly quiet (or at least as quiet as the borla that is currently on there).

one other question- based on my photos above, does it look like I have the proper rear exhaust bracket? I don't want to run into issues where I am missing something when it comes time to mount the new exhaust.

the mounts look cheap & nasty, back mount you have looks like universal for anything would not ride long distance like that!!

I had Borla on 1999 S3 mounted directly to Z bracket in back. In front mounted with old hanger not newer Y.Borla should be level under engine.

In your 1st pic you need to mount muf to your front engine hanger mount with a adjustable hose clamp and a muf shoe. Front header race shoe.

That's a race shoe
Plus one on a Dean Adams setup. I have one and it is well worth the $$

You mentioned that you might be interested in selling the pipe. Are you still thinking about it? Nice looking S3T. Love that frame/body combo.

I think the Italian made exhaust you guys are thinking of was called Wileyco. Looks like they are not around anymore.
