I saw these two on eBay, wondering what's up with the shock eyes, one looks to have a cap (possibly threaded) the other is welded. Were there different types? I know there was a reservoir free WP on early M2s.

Also the it looks like the tighter (I guess the term is progressive dampening) end of the springs are on different ends s

Lots of info out on these
Fact - they were all recalled

Possibly do to something in testing front eye broke on 1

I ran an ebr rebuilt one they used for racing never had an issue and it worked great.

Fact- you will hear all kinds of stuff about yhese but I believe only Court can speak from actual knowledge

Yeah I've read nearly all the threads on BWB about them. Court says they are good, I have an S1WL and an S2 I'd like to make look original. Sure I could buy a works and get the spring powder coated white, but $1k though :/. I bought the last one of these two from him, don't know which one I'll get, never responded to my questions. It shipped so I'll see when I get it. Plans are to clean it up and put it in a box to racetech. Some parts are unobtainable - like the rubber bumper, so fingers crossed it can be refreshened.

Oh and I've been going through my battle2win mags, and it looks like some bikes had both of these shocks, and the springs are correct on both. So I'm not sure what gives there? Or if it even matters...

William ,for the rubber bumpers you could look into making a new one from a car bump stop.

There was a thread about the difficulty to find it new,

On my S2T (which still has the original shock), the plates on either side of the spring that the bolts go through are flat aluminum plate, where the two on eBay seem to be steel stampings?

Not sure but I'm guessing these were from later tubers?

I saw that thread brother in my search. I think someone even mentioned WP offered some help in finding a replacement bumper.

Tigermann, I read that too, the S2s had billet plates, while every other model had the cheaper stamped plates like those on eBay, even the "reservoir-less" M2 WP Shock- there's one of those on eBay too. I'll probably put this one on the S1W if it works out to be "correct". One day a billet plate one will rear it's head for my 95 S2.

The general consensus was that all of the 16in showas were multiple times more likely to fail (and possibly catastrophically hence the SRP) and most would prefer a White Power product to a Showa. Legend has it the one documented broken eye case that led to the WP recall was an abused race bike. One other member posted first hand knowledge of someone who had an eye break on a WP. I think the cases of Showa failures are much more prominent. Of course the Penske, works, and even twin motorcycles offerings are better than the stock equip but are $$$.

Ok, I got the WP on the right in the photo with the standard front shock eye. I took it apart today to clean it up and assess its condition. I do want to send it to racetech for a refresh, however the bumper (as I assumed) is toast. Just a little crumbly pancake left of the bumper. I know the part is no longer available from the other threads on BWB like the one brother linked to above. It's part #50114-94Y. If I knew the correct dimensions maybe I could buy something close and cut it down. Does anyone have any idea how I could find out the dimensions? I guess a little smaller than larger would be better. Right now it's a sliver and the other BWB photo here, maybe I could scale.

polybushings.com is a resource I use for my Dodge turbocar suspension bits. If you have an idea of the original dimensions you may find something there.

Thanks rat. I found this ohlins bump stop on performanceshock.com. The shock has a 14mm shaft and roughly 50mm OD by 20mm height. I'm guesstimating the height. The ohlins bumper is 14mm rod x 40 mm OD x 19mm height. Kicker is that it looks to be solid polyeurethane rather than the original foam rubber. They had a foam rubber but it narrowed conically at one end rather than being a puck.

Know for a fact the shock with the welded eye were recalled. Replacement was the Works can/enclosed shock.
At the time there were no know failures, but the weld was suspect.

I agree, I'd prefer the one with the beefier front eye, but being as my s1 is a solo machine and was recalled with a 16.5" Showa with a welded front eye also, I think the WP shock is still better than anything Showa.

There were multiple failures of the WP shock eye failing - in street use (Recall 0817).

There were multiple contributors to the failures that drove the second shock recall, 0820. It wasn't just the shock but also depended on the engine it was fitted to.

Thank you Screamer for the update.

Imagine having the shock fail and the rear tire shoved into the seat.

The second shock recall, 0820 replaced the longer shock with the shorter shock.
"The new shock is 1.77 in. (45 mm) shorter than the previous shocks and requires the new front mount to align and install properly".

It didn't hit the seat...it hit the rear inner fender ......result in LOTS..... of smoke.

I had the first one fail on a test bike at about t 75 mph in Perry, OK.

I kept photos of the shock......loooooooong black streak in I-35 and he bike. It's sure a quick way to lower the bike.

Had to o lean it against the guard rail ..... the side stand is suddenly waaaaaaytoo long.

Wild ride.

Well I got my WP rear shock back from racetech. They had a gold valve for it and set it up for my 230 pounds. The ohlins bumper seems to work satisfactory. My only complaint is the spring was beat up quite a bit. I had the spring powder coated before I sent it out. Now I have to got at it with touch up paint or pay another $40 to have it stripped and re coated. It was also covered in oil, like soping wet inside of the bubble wrap. I hope they just sprayed it down for corrosion protection and it didn't leak out. They sent back the original valves. For $356 shipped back, I'd expect they wouldn't have chewed up my spring like that.
