I've had my 2002 M2 Cyclone for a couple months now and have been really loving it.

It has a K&N intake on it and a DIY replacement muffler from the previous owner.

I love the look of the orange tube frame and since the tail plastic was cracking under the seat I got rid of it and wired up an integrated tail light. I have a small under seat trim piece in the works to cover up a bit of the electronics and oil tank.

Welcome to BadWeb Tailgun.

Nice looking M2, the home build muffler looks tastefully done!

Hi Tailgun, i like your bike! my M2 is 2000, but i have the 2002 shift linkage like yours.
my rear tail section also cracked seems to be normal if you ride them i done almost the same as you but my bike gloss black & black frame i made up a strong alloy mount that bolts like stock under seat still has stock licence plate mount but the way i made the mount it blends in so have stock tail light & stock indicators i have stock mirrors. i have billet front engine mount & a Stenzel bar & new old stock M2 L rear shock & same seat as you only with blue trim. also i have the race carbon air cleaner & stock tach speedo like your bike
just thought i would mention, see the small fitting that mounts to your gear change splined sharft… well yours is facing to the rear so you have stock one down four up shift pattern . i faced mine other way so i have the GP shift pattern one up four down i love it!! as i like going to the track when i can, so with the GP style shift you put it in first when you are on the line, you have your two feet on ground , have you rev's at what ever rev you launch at & hold front brake. then with last amber goes on, you fly out the hole & you only have to push gear shift down for the shift, not needing to get foot under gear shift to lift up, i love it as can do it quicker.
love your bike enjoy!!

Lakes:
I'd love to see a picture of what you did to the tail end of your M2. Not sure I could get used to the reverse/GP style shifting, but its a neat idea.

I'll post more here as the project progresses.

I think that is my favorite tuber color combo.

Lord help me if I am ever driving somewhere and see an M2 in that color combo with a $2000 sign on it.

Tailgun,

I'd be more interested in seeing more detail on the tail of your bike. The removal of the rear seat fairing gives it a very clean look .

You could swap out the ignition pickup to a newer integrated type and ditch that ignition module on the side of the frame.

Luke, check your belt tension. Routinely set too tight by dealers. You should be able to push the top of the belt down to the swingarm without too much effort. Any tighter than that, and you risk damage to the wheel and output shaft bearings. Unlike sportsters, a Buell belt gets tighter as the suspension compresses.

I rode my M2 a few times without the rear fairing while I was repairing it.

HOT, that is all my rear had to say. Of course I live in FL but dang, that seat got hot, uncomfortably hot.

I liked the look, especially if I had a tidy tail as above but not sure I could get over the heat.

Anyone else have the same experience?

Reepicheep: I love the color too. Mine has seen a bit of sun in it's life and may someday be in need of new orange paint on the frame.

34nineteen: I'll get some more tail pics up soon. I'm just waiting for a day warm enough for me to work with the resin for the new piece I'm making.

Hootowl: Thanks for that heads up. Belt tension seems fine. Pretty easy to make contact with the swing arm.

Robertl: I have felt a bit of heat on my right leg, but never anything hot enough to get to or through the seat.

Tailgun i'm not very good at posting Pictures but if i could i would; also what 34nineteen mentioned is true, but i have been riding Harleys since late 70's. i have used that integrated type ignition before, but the ignition gets too hot mount in the cone on end of crank. I changed my stock ignition to Dyna tech adjustable as i have very high cranking pressure and needed to custom advance curve at well as i have rev limiter set at 6,500 as would rev to 7,500 easy but i like to play it safe as i drag race the bike as well as ride on street. i had a Dyna ignition fail from heat in the past mounted in the cone, so i like it were it comes stock as Australia is hot to warm .if it's cool to cold where you are might be ok?

Xdevil love your bike! i thought when i saw the pic's, Wow Tailgun is quick, till i worked out a different bike, yes nice colour combination!
who makes the shock your using? looks like converts from a pull type to a compressed type.
have you had the 88" build long? what heads & cams & Carb & manifold? how much comp?
& have you got many k's up with 88" yet?
i know they perform well if set up right, i knew a guy with SI 15 years back that had 88" he road it on street & raced it , he used to ride to the track was stock wheelbase no wheelie bar as he road to track & he was running in the 10's quarter mile good rider

Xldevil: I love the look of your bike. Is that right side engine cover just cut down from stock or is it an aftermarket piece?

@ Lakes
Shock is custom made by Wilbers,Germany.

88" done by TwinMotorcycles,Netherlands,sponsor here.
Crush- ported -heads by Hammerperformance, also well known.Send to the US for that.
88"Axtell cast iron cylinders,30° reverse dome pistons
S&S roller rockers,
Carillo rods, fine balanced crank with sprocket shaft bearing kit by TM.
Wood cams W8(590/246),
Mikuni HSR42,
all bearings new, most parts reinforced, pushrods custom made to length, new oilpump,etc..,etc.,etc.,
Compression,I don't know actually.
Who cares?
Set up is for maximum torque, rpm will be limited to 6000 once I will be able to bring it again to TM.
Have had a surgery of my lower back in September last year, from which I'm still suffering. Can not ride longer than half an hour or so.Way too much pain.
So the engine is only broken in now, around 1000 miles.
Will be Dyno tuned at TM and than I can tell some more about performance.
What I can say now us,I'm very pleased how smooth the engine runs and how effortless it accelerates in all gears.
@Tailgun,yes,cover is trimmed stock.

Xldevil, your bike sounds good!!!!
hope your back recovers that would be hard!
i like Torque too!!!!
that is smart keeping rev's to 6,000! you would have to really short shift quick if racing . when you tune it on Dyno i would recommend timming the TQ & HP to see what tune makes the most TQ & HP in shortest amount of time. like if you see a Dyno print out showing power & Torque @ rpm , you have no idea how long it took to get to that RPM so if you time the Dyno run under full load & see how many seconds it took to make the HP & TQ & select the tune ( like jetting & timing that makes the most HP & TQ the quickest. it works same as building for maximum TQ. i personally tuned mine on a DJ250i on full load to make max HP& TQ in 3 seconds i don't want to own HP & TQ that takes longer than 3 seconds as i would never use it WOT

34nineteen, could you give an example of a new integrated ignition where we don't need the black box anymore? Link or make/model?
Thanks!

Alright gents I hope to have updated pics up shortly.

Last weekend I got several little projects done on my M2.

I swapped the stock bars out for superbike bars, which fit perfectly without making contact with the tank. While I was working in that area I lowered the headlight and windscreen about an inch as well, so the whole front end of the bike looks a little lower and meaner. The new bars give me a little bit of forward lean at full arm extension but still maintain a comfortable riding position. The real benefit is that my elbows aren't quite as far back when I tuck in to the tank.

I also got an X1 rear hugger fender, which I immediately chopped the extended belt splatter guard off. I like the look of the bike without the hugger but I noticed several functional reasons to have one. First and most importantly my passenger(wife) notices that there are no vertical foot braces for the passenger, so it was very easy for her foot to get too close to the moving and exposed belt. Second I was getting a lot of road splatter up under the seat and oil tank.

Finally I made a small fiberglass under-seat cowel that covers up the electronics and the oil tank fittings while leaving most of the frame still visible. I'll post pics once its painted and installed.

Jayvee , i think like this this is a campfire ignition very good system , i have used one in big twin barleys but still think too much heat. but they work find so if you wanted to clean up the looks you remove the stock frame mounted module and a compact fully adjustable module fits inside ignition cone at end of crank. crane & dyna tech also make there own version.http://compufire.com/instructions/nosecone.pdf

Here's how it sits now with superbike bars, lowered headlight and windscreen, lower profile front blinkers, cropped rear tire hugger, and fiberglass underseat cowel to hide electronics.

Question to all of you. I've been told that the sock WILL fail. Anything I can do to prevent this or be prepared when it does happen? Should I try to source a spare one from ebay?

Exposure to sunlight is what slowly kills the sock. Since it's a rain cover, probably shouldn't ever see sunlight?
I have one still in the bag, never used it. Likely you could find one when/if you ever need it. If you want it for looks, there's different colored covers, as well as different colored filter oil (at Summit Racing.) I used yellow oil for a while, but now a Sprint 'water-proof' filter (K&N clone but improved) it doesn't even use oil. Anybody want some yellow filter oil?

Oh MAN... Thanks Jayvee, but thats not what I meant to ask at all (Doh!)

I typo-ed "SHOCK". I meant to ask how likely the rear under engine shock is to fail and where the best place to get a replacement is.

Yes, it will fail. Works Performance shocks are good and Penske are better. They are both more readily serviceable. Seals dry over time and the stock part is as much budget built as performance. Stock can be rebuilt but finding someone who can may be difficult.
That European company who posts on the what we did today thread has also had a stock replacement shock built, it's not high performance, if I remember their discussion correctly, just a new (probably better/easier rebuild) part to replace the old Showa.

Oops sorry most bikes don't have that rain sock on their K&N filter.
I have a Penske shock. The factory ones, even the recall replacements, have less than stellar reputation.
3-Way adjustments are good, but my previous bike had a knob to remotely control preload, I could adjust it from the seat, like when I got a passenger, and then undo it easily afterward. Very handy.
The Penske preload changes by turning the spring collar, extremely inconvenient, not even practical to adjust for changing conditions like passengers or baggage. It's the single most common adjustment needed. Penske should have made it the knob on the remote reservoir, but thats the Rebound Damping.
If there is any shock with anything like a remote preload adjuster, I'd recommend that over the Penske.

That's the factory M2 custom seat, don't remember the official name. Bit of a rarity now, especially to find matching piping color. They used to be around $200-ish? Much softer than a Corbin, in a bad way, more squishy I guess, about the same as stock. The bump up, where the strap is, is farther back than stock, maybe 1 inch. But the weight is like stock, whereas the Corbin is literally 15 pounds heavier.

I picked one up from a member here a few years ago for a great price. It has a small tear on bottom edge which i guess i should repair.

It is a nice improvement over the stock. As another said, the foam is squishy and since i have no padding it was exactly what I needed.

My wife's old blast came with a Corbin and she hated it so went back to stock. Sat on a few Corbin for our Spyder and didn't like them either. Corbin looks great and people either love or hate them. For the Spyders they go with Ultimate, Mustang, daylong, or brp comfort.

If you have a seat you like and just want to be more comfortable, there are place that will replace the foam with gel. I was researching this for the wife because they can also lower an inch or more depending on the seat thickness.

I also could help myself from posting this link:
