hey again guys. i fell off of here after having a M2 sold while on my way down to buy it. really bummed me out after all the work i did to get the cash.

so i randomly search craigslist for buells. im kinda stuck on a m2, i love s2/3 bikes but really dont like the s3 seat (id rather make a m2 with s2 fairing)

a friend of mine who actually told me about this site (hes not online here) has a 2000 M2 hes thinking of selling and i was the first person he called.

ok so im going to attempt to re-list everything he told me about it.

2000 with 26k miles. its been sitting for a few years and he rode it for a few years without registration. he knew there was going to be back fees but when he called DMV they also told him Harley Credit is still listed on the title (like a lot of people he didnt send the title back into dmv for transfering into his name alone) so im assuming now the easiest thing to do would be LIEN SALE.

now here is what i can remember him saying about it...

rocker box gaskets have been replaced
V&H slip on and carb was modified for pipe.
Hand made fiberglass plate holder and rear fender/belt covers
x1 rubber mount blinkers?
buell race air filter?
rear shock reaplaced with rebuilt, newer unit w/ reservoir?
(story with shock is his friend needed the shock for a trip and brought back his, rebuilt. my friend says it has less than 1000 miles on it)

things that it needs or issues

paint on tank (claims gas eat away paint, never fixed it)
needs new tires (qouted almost 400 for both, installed + tax)
bike was in a low speed, slide out when his dad rode it one morning to work (grandpa)
exhaust hanger is cracked bad
needs breather? cover removed for battery shows blow by on rear rocker box.

i also noticed for me, being 6ft, 285lbs (40" pants, XL shirts) when i sat on the bike the back barley moved. to compare, another friends 2000 m2 seems to squat alot more when i sat on it. hmmmm..

so im asking for your help in deciding what i should offer, with me doing all the work besides mounting tires. ive seem buells like this from 2500 but usually around 3000 for a decent one.

i trust that hes taken good care of it (before not being able to ride anymore) but do feel a stigma around it being dropped, the primary cover was replaced.

he will factor in the reg fees but im not sure what it will cost me to lien sale it.

at this point im thinking its a $1200-1500 bike considering what it needs but im not sure if he will go that low.

PICTURES :-D

The poor thing. $1200 seems like a fair price for it as is (IMHO) if the title was perfect.

Screwed up title and lien? I'm not sure its worth *anything*. You can part it out, but by the time you figure out how much work that is and how much Ebay takes and how much shipping costs and how much is left over, it's back to "I'm not sure its worth anything".

It could be turned into a nice bike again though.

I'm sure the harley credit thing can be taken care of. Problem is back fees. I could junk it and re-register it to wipe fees but that drops the value and I'm stuck doing a Vin verification at CHP and a brake and light inspection (not sure on brake and light on motorcycles)

I doubt the junk and reregister would work with a lien on the original title... I did that for my totaled Uly that I rebuilt, and the title still had to be transferred twice (once to salvage, then back to a post salvage something or other). I doubt any of the transfers would be possible until you clear up the lien, and HD has no reason whatsoever to want to relieve you of any of the financial debts associated with the bike (bogus or not).

I saw that yellow m2/s3

Main issues are it sat if SF enough to ruin the forks. He replaced them after blowing out 2 sets of seals. He also redid the top end and rings but someone recommended cometic gaskets and he said the base gasket is starting to leak already.

Also no idea of actual miles. 16k on odo but who knows which cluster he used.

One mirror missing. Not sure if it got knocked off.

I do like it and the m2/s3

And if he did pay it off and he has the time all he has to do is transfer it in his name... but they probably won't let him do that till he pays the back fees. If he does a statement of fact sayin it's been stored off public highway and or he sent in his non-op and dmv did not receive it.

No matter what I think I'm starating to see this is too much.

There is an s3 for sale in antichoch 2200, a yellow m2 with s3 fairing and a s2 for 2k. Sf cl. I have an m2 and s2 or would buy it myself.
I am in Vallejo. If u want I will go with u.
The bike in the pic I would offer 1k not much more assuming the back fees are not bad. You can check dmv with the plate and last 5 vin to see the fees.
Check compression. That bike looks like an investment, it will only have value to you. You will not likely recoup if u sale. A good m2 would range from 2.5k to 3.5k.

Yeah I saw that too. What's the engine specs for a 98 s3? Like a m2 engine? Looks like black heads. I'm OK with it being carbed. Not Into The steel swing arm but I know I can changet that.

Main thing now... I think I'm stuck on that fat m2 seat. The s3 looks thin. Never rode a s3

Not sure about the specs - should be comfortable though and carbed. He called me says it pulls the front tire up in second. Look at yellow m2 seat plus fairing and like 16k mikes for 2700 - not bad to start. The cost of adding the fairing is few hundred by itself.
You want to change the primary tensioner, and the front motor mount and maybe the exhaust hanger before they break. From Al est ~ 600 in parts if they have not been done yet. And the s3 had the fairing replace so it has probably been down.

so the yellow m2, i think ill pass on it. id rather not rip half the engine off again to do base gaskets he just did. his price will probably not drop much for the work needed (everyones for sale ad says "easy fix"). why did he have to do all that work if it only has 16k miles? why would he put new rings in there, i understand "since your in there" but 16k miles shouldnt have much wear on them

the s3t i think ill pass on too. mostly because im falling in love with the M2 fat seat and want to stay away from the older suspension parts.

called my buddy this morning with the blue m2... told him that dmv will not wave back fees for a lien sale. he knows what it needs and told me not to worry about insulting him on the offer.

anywhere else cheaper for tires besides cycle gear?

best price for a new drive belt?

The blue M2 can be brought back for sure if the current owner understands how screwed up the situation currently is (both mechanically and in terms of paperwork). There is a sound bike in there waiting to be released.

Check Amazon for tires (seriously). Not always good deals, but I have gotten a few nice scores that way.

amazon has decent prices. main issue is tire age and the fact most shops double the tire mounting fee if you dont buy the tires from them.

thank you for seeing some potential in the bike.

any idea on locating a upgraded muffler bracket? that thing will crack again

I got the tires for my S3T on Motorcycle Superstore for less than $350. Conti attacks. The Road pilots are a bit cheaper. Includes shipping, but not mounting so it might not be a better deal.

I'm 6'2 and don't have any issues with the seat on my S3. Pretty comfortable, but I have not taken any long trips yet.

The yellow m2 has banke rearsets, shifter and brake. It also has a ventura luggage rack. The S3 fairing of course. Too bad the corbin has rips. The corbin on M2 is very compfy. Are the base gaskets weeping, or leaking? The mods on it imply the owner knows buell tubers and cared about the bike. What is wrong with cometic gaskets? They are good gaskets!

As for the blue bikes gas tank, WTH! If I drip gas at the pump I wipe it off and rinse it with window or drinking water if need be. If my tank leaks I replace the o-ring and stop it. I do like the rear fender and belt gaurd on the blue one. Looks nice.

Tires are a consumable. Your always gonna be buying them. You should learn how to do your own it'll save you a lot and you can buy them on the internet. Motorcycle superstore and competition accessories are two I use. They have two or three good sales a year and always supply fresh tires.

Whatever you do, make sure that the belt and the primary chain wasn't run too tight on the one you decide to get. That causes a host of other problems like premature transmission bearing failures and rear tire bearing premature failure. Examine the rubber engine isolators to see if they have ever been replaced or are in need. Examine the front engine mount bracket and the head boss it mounts into. Ask if primary shoe is the new upgraded one. Was the clutch spring plate removed or replaced?

Yeah, we have a neighborhood tire mounter, so we mount our own tires. The street bike tires are actually easier then the kids dirt bike tires.

What i look for is "who" is selling the bike and its history if possible. This is probably more important than the bike itself - at least to me.

Possibly irrelevant to the purchase, but that blue one's cut-out hugger is pretty cool. These custom touches suggest somebody cared about the bike at one time...
