I have a chance to buy a 2002 cyclone with 11900 miles on it. Clean good shape (I think) what should I be looking for and what might be a good price? Took a friends out for a ride. What fun alot different than my xb. Prices seem to be all over the place though

Yeah, prices are all over.

It's a 2002, they were pretty well sorted by then. Here is what I would check were I to buy one (and I might someday)... This is just 2002, I left off some stuff that was sorted by the factory on later models like that one.

Make sure the front exhaust hanger is the "upside down Y" cast part, not just a couple of plates dangling down.

Make sure the rear shock has an external resevior (the post recall shock).

Look for broken header studs.

Get the rear wheel off the ground, put the bike in neutral, and turn the rear wheel forward and backward by hand with engine off and listen for any crunching at the front drive sprocket.

If it's an aftermarket exhaust like the vance and hines, price in replacing that. If its the supertrapp IDS, do the happy dance. Stock is fine also.

Look at the engine isolator in the back. Never had to replace mine, do a little searching here to see what to look for.

You are at about the right milage to do the front rocker box gasket (the front will likely have gone already). Not a big deal, a nice time to bond with the bike.

The M2 was actually a really nicely sorted bike by 2002. If you get it, cm'on back and we will give some other good proactive advice, but nothing that would change a buy/don't buy decision.

For price, the M2 is now firmly in the "whats it worth to you" category. So many good bikes are now so cheap. If I were to do it purely objectively, I'd say it was a $2000 to $2500 bike. It was out of date even with the company that built it, and that company itself is now out of date. Uly's are selling for $5000, and a Uly is a better M2 than an M2 by just about any measure. The M2's "peers" in the day were things like the SV650 and the Kawasaki ZR7, and I expect those are $2500 bikes also now, and those companies still exist.

On the other hand, if you asked me what an M2 like that is worth emotionally, it would be no trouble at all to get $5000 worth of smiles from that bike over the next 5 years. And I'd choose it over an SV650 or ZR-7 in half a heartbeat.

It will make you a nice bike whatever you pay for it... and a cheap nice bike is more fun than an expensive nice bike.

I expect I'll find one locally for $1000 that needs $1000 to $2000 work, and I'll end up buying it before long. Particularly if it's an orange frame with a volcano grey body.

I got mine for $1400 but it was a bit rough. In good shape, $3k or more easily I would think. I've got over $2500 into mine already (with me doing the work) and it's still not anywhere near done and ready to ride.

We recently picked up a 2001 M2 with only 7500 miles on it. Pristine condition. I happily paid $3500 for it.

As Reepicheep says, prices are all over. The bikes value will vary greatly given condition and care.

I will have to disagree w/ him on one point though. I happen to like the Vance & Hines pipe that is installed on both of our Buells and have had no issue with them. My bike's got well over 50k miles on it. YMMV

If you can, give it a good look over, and follow what Reep stated. My biggest problem with the M2 was the nut connecting the handlebars to the seat and trying to make the bike something it wasn't. Fix what needs fixing, and run it hard. Like others have stated, know what you are getting, it's not a sport bike, it's not a true cruiser, its just a good standard motorcycle that does everything well and nothing great. It will eat some miles though set up properly.

I think any exhaust can be good or bad, but they have to be installed right with all the fittings/clamps - these bikes seem to vibrate in all three planes which isn't good for exhausts.

check the wires! My wife had brought my truck more than once because of those darn things - a pregnant wife pushing a bike into the back of a 4X4 makes for a rough next few days : )

I replaced all the isolators at around 15K. tightened the bike up. I don't know what thier replacement intervals are though.

Like reep states, orange and volcano grey is still the coolest stock color combo...

Ya, I spent twice what my used bike cost on 'upgrades' that I didn't even need, like billet aluminum mirror lock nuts, and Pegasus logo bits, and like that.
I was only stranded once, by the starter clutch, and I had ignored the early warning signs, and the late warning signs, and even then I coulda made it home if I'd been able to bump start it...
