Hey guys, I need to rebuild my 02 motor but I have not idea where to start as I have never cracked up a v twin before. Actually I have never done much engine work on a bike before but I am not worried about the wrench turning, as I do all of my own work on various cars and trucks I have had and my friends have had. My buddy told me it is something I can do myself but I want to find some "how to's" before I start. So do you all know of any books or websites where I can start reading up on what I need and where to start?

As of now I just want to get it back up and going, I would like to think that if there are good upgrades to do once I start I would like to find them out and do them along the way. I put a forcewinder on there before it went down and I am definitely going to have to put an exhaust on there also. I am going to cafe the tail and use the smaller tank for the front. Please point this padowan in the right direction to get back in the saddle again

1. Get a shop manual and a parts catalog. As far as books, Those two will answer 99% of the questions you will have. BadWeb can fill in the parts that the Motor Company left out.

The big difference between the HD V twin and the engines you are used to working on is that the HD V-Twin is a roller bearing bottom end with a multi piece crankshaft/flywheel.

Once you pull the top end off, you can measure the wheels and rods for trueness without splitting the cases- the specs are in the manual. If the bottom end needs rebuilt and you need to split the cases- farm it out to a real shop. Most of the time the bottom end is either fine, or really, really noticeably bad - I haven't seen any that were in the middle. Doing bottom end work well requires quite a few special tools and experience.

Top end is pretty normal - a good port and polish job on the heads goes a long way. If the heads are off anyways, you can look at piping up the cams if you want to roll that way....The X1 and S3 had hotter cams, not sure if the last year cyclone got the good Thunderstorm heads or not. Have a machine shop mic the bore and see if you need to go to an overbore and new pistons or if you can get by with rings.

If you need pistons, you can decide to go to an aftermarket kit like the 1250 and new jugs, or just bore your stock one. There are pros and cons to both approaches - I'm in the "Bore the stock ones" school.

Exhaust, sure, ok - the "Silent but Violent" stock one actually works really well, but most guys want a better sound. If you screw with the exhaust, just assume you will need to screw with (tune) the intake as well.

I have the manual and parts catalog already. Haven't went through them thoroughly yet.

What would you recommend on picking up to facilitate tear down and rebuild. I am in the barracks here on post but I do have a storage unit where I can do the work at. Saying that, I mean that I don't have my tools down here on base so I am running a bare boned tools box that I keep in my truck. So no stands nothing at all right now.

Should I move this topic out to the main forums to get a little more coverage and info since this place isn't getting the traffic like it used to?

Find a reputable Buell mechanic and pay him to give you a condition report.
You'll know where to begin then
