Simple suggestions to replace the stock M2 Air Box ? Was thinking of getting a used stock sportster air box ? |

you would need to file it down its too deep and the edge will hit the frame rails that surround the carb |

Actually, that was a round, evolution-style air cleaner I was thinking of. I think the backing plate of a regular sportster air cleaner would hit the frame and you would not be able to use it. Older S1s and maybe S2s used a sportster style air cleaner that was mounted at an angle, but I think you would have clearance issues on the M2 for one of these as well. The carbon fiber race air intake (if you can find one) will fit, I had one on my M2 for years. It is shaped like the sportsters but is carbon fiber instead of chrome. |

The Sportster chrome oval? It would be in the way of my knee even worse than the Buell Race Kit carbon-fiber one. The Sportsters ones are centered on the filter, the Buell one has the backing plate offset forward (the carb throat hole is at the rear end of the oval.) |

ok that makes sense - the offset and the frame get in the way of using a standard sportster air box. The forcewinder ones would also work then since they outside the frame. |

I'm not sure the standard sportster can't be used, there are adaptors, really just a standoff spacer on the outside of the carb that makes the air box backing plate be further out. This should clear the frame. I only meant do you really want to? The chrome oval in the way of your knee may be why one wouldn't want to use Sportster. Even the offset one had me banging my knee into the cover all the time, I went with the Forcewinder style elbow to eliminate that. (I'm 6'2".) Maybe take a look at these, not to buy one, just see the difference between the air cleaners: nrhsperformance.com/partshurricaneflow.shtml hammerperf.com/xlaircleaners.shtml |

I'll make it even simpler - No. I've a new found appreciation for how good the stock bread box actually is and I've re-installed it. It's JUST right, and it's quiet - no hiccups, chirps or stuttering when it was back on. It doesn't look great but form follows function in this case.. |
