I have a stock 99 x1, I want to get rid of that big ugly muffler. could I take that off and have a straight pipe with a angle tip built in and if I do would I hurt the motor?? |

you can do that, it will just be very loud. won't hurt motor , if it does not run strong wide open throttle under load, check jetting but if it runs strong it's ok as it is. what carb does it use now? & what is the jetting? |

Don't waste your money on a power commander. The Buell ECUs conflict with them and they do wrong things. A straight pipe is sucky for performance. Your best bet is to get a somewhat loud muffler. The OEM "truck muffler" has a torque dip in the midrange. This was done on purpose to that steady cruise is most quiet. You have to downshift it to make it do anything. My personal loud pipe is a "daytona boss" they no longer make them and the mounting hardware was trash. The performance of the damn thing is night/day between the stocker though. Try to get your hands on a supertrapp or a V&H. My only objection to the V&H is that you have to drop the muffler to change the tranny fluid. |

Best bet is D&D slip on. Bullet proof, very nice sound (loud) |

The reason the Power Commander had troubles with Buells was the "learned fuel" area, if you did not add fuel here you were fine. Too many people just tuned it as normal and it was good until they went for a ride, then bam the ECU adjusted and the bike ran like crap. |

The supertrapp is a good muffler. The V&H is junk. run one long enough and it will shake itself to bits. I'd go supertrapp internal disc. Sound, backpressure, and flow-tuneable. |

I know some folks have had bad experiences with V&H SSR2 but mine has been rock solid for the past 20K miles. I did put an extra bead of weld on the rear bracket as a preventive measure since that appears to be the weak spot on these mufflers. Whatever aftermarket exhaust/intake combination you choose, you'll need to tune the fuel maps to account for the leaner mixture. A Race ECM or replacing the stock maps with the Race fuel/timing maps will address that issue. If you go the D&D route, make sure you replace the front hanger with a Y hanger to handle the weight and the stress. My V&H has been just fine with the stock pre-01 hanger. |
