So I get the opportunity to take the "new" X1 out today. Was low on fuel so I dumped a little in from my gas can for the mower to get me to the filling station. Unfortunately, I never made it that far. Pull out of my neighborhood, and am shifting into 3rd gear and it just dies... Thought I'd run out of gas, so this local shop let's me put some in the tank. OK. Gas is visible now, so I know that isn't the issue... Turn the key, set killswitch to "run" and I see the little red light on the tach, and hear the fuel pump doing it's thing. Wait for little red light to go off, it does, and I crank. It turns over, but will not start...no clue where to begin.. Obviously it's not the battery, or starter, as it'll turn over. I don't think it's fuel, because it's got some in there **unless running low octane can cause this issue... I'm leaning towards spark, but not really sure, as it was running fine, then just quit. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm kind of at a loss and a bit flustered as I want to ride this damn bike sooner, rather than later |

How old was the fuel in the mower? Could it have been gunked up? A clogged injector could do what you're describing (I think). You are supposed to use premium gas, but I think it would be more likely to run rough than not at all (but someone else here probably knows exactly what it'd do). |

Put a new set of plugs in it.. I'll have my new to me s3T on the road Monday... BUT, after I got it home from the previous owner, the bike ran on one cylinder. I pulled the plugs and YUK... real black, probably from a lot of warming it up in the garage and for potential buyers.. Once I put the new set in.. presto.. runs like it should. |

Guess I should have clarified that a bit...fuel I put in was from the can I use to fill the mower...was fairly new 87 octane...I guess it could be an injector issue, so I'll drop some deadpan in there and swap out the plugs to start with... Might pick up a can of starter fluid as well to see if that'll fire off the motor Thanks, guys! |

Does it still have the sidestand switch as they are a known trouble spot. |

Pull up the spark plug boots and make sure that it's not all corroded in there. I had that happen on my S1 during the first ride of the year some time back. A good place for some dielectric grease if ever there was one. |

http://imgur.com/a/AwbOB Pulled the rear plug, as it was simplest to get to, just to check. Above pic is what I'm looking at...will pick up a new pair tomorrow. Not sure that will solve the issue, but it'll be one thing that I can rule out, and plugs are cheap. It does appear to have the kickstand switch, though, I'm pretty sure it's not working (or working properly). On my Honda, if stand is down, and I drop it in first, bike shuts down. On the X1, if stand is down, and I drop it into first, nothing happens. Though, I don't think it's the kickstand swtich- the motor is turning over and trying to start, just quite unsuccessfully. Will report back on how the plugs go. Petty sure the ignition is still working, bc when I pulled the plug, I made the (dumb?) mistake of cranking it once to see if it was sparking...holy shit is zapped me pretty good |

Start simple. Check fuses and relays first. Next check the ground points - ground block under the front of the seat and the ground strap on the swing arm. |

The injector and coil wires are known to chafe where the frame tube comes near the gas tank. Go to the appropriate pins on the ECM connector and check for resistance while moving the harness around. Run new wires to the coils or injectors if you have to. Shrink wrap/solder splice them into the harness near the ECM to avoid looking for new pins for the connector. It might also be a bad connection in the ignition switch. That can be bypassed at its connector near the steering neck. (Message edited by harleyelf on September 28, 2013) |

See my thread from a few weeks ago titled - X1 No Start - My issue started after running on fumes and barley getting fuel before running completely out. My issue could have been unrelated but not sure. Lots of good info from members here in that thread at any rate, it might be helpful for you. |

swap the fuel and ignition relays under the seat... turn the ignition key as you would to start the bike, if you DO NOT hear the fuel pump prime BEFORE you hit the starter button, you have verified a bad relay... available at autozone. |
