I've got a 2002 S3T and its recently started an annoying jump when taking off in first gear. The bike's never been abused(wheelies, burnouts, etc) as I'm 53 and ride pretty conservatively. I've adjusted the clutch, changed the transmission oil(using Mobil 1 75W90), adjusted the shift linkage and nothing has helped. When taking off, it feels like its going to jump out of gear, even though it never does. Does anyone have any ideas as to a possible remedy? Thanks!!!

Sounds like worn dogs on the gears.
In other words, $$$.
My X1 started to do that around 45,000 miles in second gear.
I had them fix it under the extended warranty right before it expired. It was $750 or so as I recall.

Yours could be something cheaper like a shift detente plate becoming loose though.

Get that Mobile 1 out of there and replace with HD Formula Plus Trans/Primary Oil.

Start there and see what happens.

Mine does the same thing every once and a while. From my searching, it seams to be a fairly common problem with sportsters which share the same tranny. I havnt found a reason why yet though...

It's worn 2nd gear [engagement] dogs. Reepicheep did his for less than $200.

Pulling the tranny is a simple affair if you are a competent shade tree mechanic. I've had mine out a couple times, I'd consider myself an adequate mechanic.

Same problem on my bike, worse if I goose the throttle. I'm also a conservative rider. I haven't pulled it to fix since I've only got a couple thousand miles on the synthetic fluid in there.

Some of the gear oils have additives that are bad for the stator (magnet adhesives give up if I remember correctly). I had the best tranny performance using the same stuff you're running, but didn't want to ruin my stator so went back to approved 20/50 lubes.

Its a lot of little steps, but none individually that difficult. Just be very methodical in taking things apart... I use and reuse 50 or so ziplock freezer bags... Do one step, take the parts for that step and put them in the ziplock, take a post it note and write (in pencil) the next number (2,3,4,5), seal the zip lock, and throw in a box.

Reassemble the reverse of removal, using the manual.

Having just the parts at hand for each step makes it much less likely to run down a rabbit hole. Fewer parts to choose from, and you know not to go to 3 until you have all the parts from 4 used. : )

I think the only tool I really needed that I didn't have was a monster set of snap ring pliars.

Your symptom is the classic worn dogs symptom.
