Greetings!

I left my beloved Ducati 900ss/sp behind in California and have found myself in brooklyn. The first order of business was to get back in the saddle.
I've wanted a buell since I first saw an s1 in 1996 and now I have purchased a 97 m2. I've got a lot to learn about the bike but I already feel that we may be on the path to a meaningful relationship. Also, I'm very pleased to find this wealth of information.

The PO says that the bike was stored from 1997 till 2012 with 7 miles on it. He purchased it last year and put about 6000 miles on it. The bike is in great shape but has had none of the recall work done. Like I said, I've got a lot to learn but my most immediate concern is with the rear shock which is the original WP with no reservoir. The shock is very stiff but twisting the compression damping adjustment has no effect whatsoever. I'm getting pretty beat up riding around on the nasty streets and freeways around here.

I was hoping that I could get the Showa k1400 shock as a recall replacement so I called the local Harley dealership. The can't tell me anything till I bring it in for them to look at which I'm going to do on thursday.

I suppose another option would be to send the shock I have to someone like racetech to get it worked on. I'd be grateful for anyone's opinion on the matter. Here are some photos of the bike and the shock.

Does the shock work OK now? Have read some posts that the original was OK/good for the most part, but i have not ridden one.

My S1 came with the 2nd recall short Showa. OK but sort of stiff.

My X1 came with a blown out long Showa. I replaced it with a used but good long Showa with recall bracing on it. That setup was still sort of soft, and I did not care much for the brace kit. Before messing with comp/rebound, I found a deal on a NOS short Showa. I think it is OK, could probably use a little more rebound. (I weigh 250lb).

If you find that you need a rear shock, I think one of the new offerings is the best bet.

Look at, Penske, Works, or the Twinmotorcyles unit (no reservoir on the twinmotorcycle shock).

I won't go into the politics of the WP (touchy subject around here ), but Racetech does a fine job of re-valving and springing the WP to your weight and riding style.

The nice thing about remote adjustment for dampening and rebound is being able to set for varying conditions...

Good luck with your new ride!

Well, I looked into the available aftermarket shocks and wish that I could justify getting one of them. For now though, I can't even figure out how to get out of this enormous city so a nice, pricey shock would be kind of wasted. I'm just going to hope that the Harley place will get me a replacement shock that won't beat the crap out of me. From doncasto.net I gather that the final recall solution (showa k1400.8) will work ok. But I'm wondering if anyone is of the opinion that I'd be better off getting the original WP shock rebuilt. I suppose that's the route I'll take if I can't get a new shock from Harley.

I run an original shock, rebuilt and re-spring by Ractech. I think its the best looking shock. If you think yours is stiff, I think there's something wrong with it because they are generally too soft, IMHO.

we developed a long model and a short model rear shock as a replacement for the Old Tube frame Buells:
