I'm going to look at a motor for a friends sportster that is supposed to be out of a buell. The person who owns it had planned on using it for a chopper build, but never finished. It's out of the bike, heads off. I'm trying to figure out if the motor is actually from a buell, and if so what year/model. Google has produced no definitive guide, only a search that requires the full 17 digit vin. |

My x1 doesn't have the full vin on the motor, and what it does have I can't decode. Buell on the heads where? Near the rocker tube holes? |

Thanks. That plus the chamber shape should help me ensure at least the heads came from a buell. |

My S1 has the entire vin on the left side. I'd sure like to see that. The motor number should be an abbreviated version of the VIN, and NOT the entire VIN. Although, in the early days with the overly manual (each character individually, with the '*' being 2 separate stamps) stamping of the motor number anything is possible. Even with the less manual/slightly more automated system used later in the tuber days, some unusual occurrences were possible. Here's a pic of my S2's motor number stamping from a while back when it had a base gasket leak - hopefully with enough 'geographical info' to locate it on any motor:
First and last character are * The RT is the 'type code' or model code, SS is S1 and X1, YS is S1W, FS is S3T, RS is S3, and if memory serves KS is M2. 11 is configuration, 11 is World, 56 is California S is model year, W is 1998 (looking at a 1997-1998 S3/S3T manual as I type this) The rest is a sequential # straight from the full VIN Hopefully this is enough info to get the job done. Or if you could send me a pic of the engine number I can try to 'crack the code'. HTH, 1313

1313, Thanks so much. I know exactly where the vin is located on the motor, but had no information to decode it. This, plus the head stamping/combustion chamber should be perfect. Thanks again. Just for comparison. My bike is a 2000, looks like harley skipped W on their bikes, but buell used it . Weird. (Message edited by turboglh on April 22, 2012) |
