my boss said i had to write the number down on the key to get a new one if i didnt would need a new ignition, but someone else just recently lost there keys here and asked the badweb what to do , and everyone said you just need your V.I.N number to get one. But took the dealer a week to get it. hope this helps, i would do what 01x1buell said, go to your local harley dealer.

Very easy to hotwire a Buell!!! Go look on the left side of your headlamp there is a black connector to the left and low... Just go and get 10 ga. wire and three spade female connectors and tie all three wires together and you have your bike up and running. You can make an easy connector to bypass your key switch completely as Buell key switches go out all the time due to poor design. (justsayin)... until you get your keys! : ) I made one when my damn switch went out twice and left me stranded... i was determined to hotwire a buell and found out how scary easy they are to do that! Now I went to RFID security (with Digital Guard Dawg) and a high-amperage circuit and did away with keys. (of course I could lose the RFID tag), so I found a way to spoof and honeypot a potential hot wire scenario that actually sets off a silent page alarm. : ) -- I now have a way to touch four points on the bike and start my bike if I ever lose my RFID tag (i.e. keys) : ) But serious... very easy to hotwire a Buell.

I made a nice wire set just like you described but I was not sure to post it or not. Originally I found a piece of wire lying on the ground, stripped off the ends, and pushed it into be back side of the plug. It got me home............
I'll keep the wire set I made under my seat jut in case my ignition goes out one day.

I did the same G.... I reused my female three-prong connector now as backup to my RFID Digital Guard Dawg (token key), justincase : ) -- but yeah, I too was determined to not be stranded the second time when I replaced the key switch and remembered that it just plugs into the exposed damn connector anyone can get at. So now, I have a high-amp bridge relay circuit and a new digital guard dawg tag (no key) and the wires are now all cool and have not had any issues so far. : )

Honestly, if someone wants to steal your bike, they will without even having to start the thing. 4 guys and a truck is all it takes.

I've got a switch camouflaged in the wiring. No more key-starts for me and rather easy to steal if someone wanted to.

But like I said, if someone wants it, they'll find a way to get it anyway.

Buy insurance : p
