I have just bought a 97 M2 and have found a decent price on a 2002 manual. Will the 02 manual crossover enough to help me with the 97 ?

I would get the 97 manual because you will need it sooner than later. Especially the electrical. Pay now or pay later.

Too many changes between those years, Frame, Swingarm,Wiring, Heads, Exhaust, Body panels,Seat, just to name a few. Find a 97-98 and you will be safe.
