I have been looking for something to use on my X1 to basically make it less of a hassle to ride to work. All I really want is something to throw my lunch and "maybe" a little more into (rain gear, etc) I think a tail bag should be good enough since I can cram extra's into the underseat storage. My question is, can you use the Cortech tail bag on it's own? Or do you need the saddle bags too? Also, any other ECONOMICAL suggestions are welcome.

Yes, the round duffle style and the sport style have elastic J-hooks on them to attach to the frame. Cycle Gear sells a flat bar with two hooks on the ends that mount to the license plate bolts which gives you somewhere to hook to on the rear. I've hooked the front cords on that triangular section of the frame with good results. My Buell laptop bag has the under the seat cloth panel that clips to the bag and that has worked really well for me too.

Safe ride,

I love my Cortech bags. I had the tail bag first and it will hold your lunch plus some other stuff. I raise my seat and attach the J hooks in an "X" pattern under my seat then snap the seat back down, works great and it also is expandable which is pretty nice. I later bought the saddle bags to go along with it and am pleased with both. I'll snap you a pic if you'd like. They're all on the bike right now.

Thanks X1, yeah that is my setup exactly only mine are red. I thought with all the black on my bike three bright red bags on the back may help.

$60 for the tailbag sounds right, about $116 for the saddlebags. IIRC there are three colors to choose from.

I saw X1_'s bags on the way to homecoming and was very impressed with the sleek fit and finish of them on the bike. They look like they were made for the X1.

I'm kinda jealous and wish I had the cortech bags instead of the Firstgear bags I have.

How could you not go with Cortech, they're even mounted on a Buell in their catalog pictures. Seriously, I like mine and hope you get years of enjoyment out of them Bhillberg.

Is this the part you are talking about that mounts to the license plate, giving you somewhere to hook the tail bag onto?

I currently have the tail bag bungee straps hooked to each other under the seat. There are some male/female clips that are supposed to come with it but mine did not come with the female portion. The female portion is supposed to have loops for hooking around things. The store I bought mine at is ordering them for me. So far I have put about 250-300 miles with it just bungeed to the seat and it seems to hold fine. If I can figure out the female clips though then it will be a quick disconnect so that I can take it inside with me. The descriptions online didn't really serve the bag justice. There is a main compartment for large stuff and then a few smaller ones for orginization.

You got the duffle style tail bag right? I am leaning more towards that one than the sport style bag. But I am concerned that if it ain't full (like it would be on a trip to work) it will hang down over the sides of the tail section (I don't have saddle bags either).

No, I have the sport one. It actually has a descent amount of room in it though, It can expand too. Mine is the same as the one pictured on the white X1 above. I don't have saddlebags either (yet)

Cobraman:

I bought the 'close out' version for $6. The link shows the new part with the backing plate. Mine is the portion that has the two hooked ends on it. The bracket I made is similar to this mount, but is longer to extend out to the edges of the tail section of the bike and turns down at an angle to keep the saddlebags out away from the tire. I put some of that hook and loop stick on fastener material on the metal and the back pad of the saddlebags to help keep them from bouncing around.

I use the round duffle. I had a full set of the Sport bags too, but needed more capacity. Neat thing about the duffle is that you can unzip the inner panels and fit a small tent and sleeping pad inside. I've also bungied a large regular duffle on top when I've needed more space. I don't use a chase vehicle so everything has to fit on the bike.

Safe ride,

Gary, DPG
