I just bought an 02 M2L with 2500 miles on the speedo. Use Premium, cleaned carb, all stock. Idles fine, maybe a little ruff but i don't know anyone else with a V twin to compare. Anyways if I try to ride for 10 minutes I'll stall out. It's happened at 2000, 3000, and 4000 rpm. The higher the RPMs the quicker it seems to happen. As soon as I come to a stop or sometimes even before I stop i can start it right up and im good for another 10 minutes or so. Any ideas????

Blocked fuel tap ? sounds like its starving for fuel.
Earth problem, theres a strap attached to the swingarm give that a clean.

I checked the fuel flow out of tank thru petcock and gas line and it seemed pretty good.

Disabled the side stand switch and still have the issue. I rode around at different RPMs today and it happens at all RPM ranges. The higher the rpm the quicker it happens. So i'm thinking maybe my flow to carb may be a little slow. don't know if theres a way to measure that or not.

On the stock M2 carb is there a way to adjust the high speed jet??? The only adjustment screw I saw was on the bottom for fuel mixture I believe.

change your plugs then leads if it dosen't fix it , I can't see why the carby settings would change, maybe your main is partially blocked?
do the easiest things first.

That sounds like a plugged fuel tank vent valve. The vent valve is supposed to allow air into the tank during normal operation but if the valve happens to get stuck closed for whatever reason, the tank develops a partial vacuum with the engine running because the carb is constantly sucking fuel.

So, because the carb is sucking fuel from the tank, a partial vacuum is formed and it's the tank vent valve's job to let air into the tank as the carb is sucking fuel out of the tank.

A quick check of the tank vent valve's worth is, when the bike starts dying on the road at speed, quickly open the fuel tank filler cap to let air in. If the engine quickly responds with normal running, then it's a sure sign that the tank vent valve is plugged up or otherwise inoperative.

When you cleaned the carb, did you do the mandatory rejet from stock?Try a 45 pilot jet and a 190 main.
Uncork the air screw and set it at 2 1/2 turns out.
Those are good starting points.

Still sounds like you have something else going on too though...
Sparky may be on to something...

+1 on the vent tube.

Also, FWIW, when I bought my S1W in 2006, with 1,100 miles on it, I had to literally clean the jets with a dental pick, they were so gobbed up. Idle circuit especially. I finally gave up on the slow jet and just bought a replacement for it (45/190 combo with full Buell race kit).

Now, on the wife's M2L ('01) that I bought her 2 weeks ago, I had to pull the petcock and clean it. It only had 4400 miles on it and the petcock was all varnish inside. Ran great with a full fuel line, but when I shut it off and ran it dry to pull the tank, it never pulled enough thru the air-filled hose to get fuel back to the carb. Now that I've cleaned it out...perfection : )

+2 on the vent tube, I replaced a cable tie on my X1's wiring harness last year that just happened to have the vent tube along side it.

Not thinking I over tightened it.

Didn't take long to figure out why it was stalling every 20 minutes.

Can someone tell me where to order these jets online? I called up 3 local Harley Dealerships and none of them sell or service buells : ( So then I asked them about the Keihin carb since I was told it has been used on some sportsters and other Harleys and they said, "We don't deal with buells." I found some jets online with harley part numbers but cannot find a 190 for the main jet, only 185 and 200

You can buy just "a jet", or you can go for a Dynojet Thunderslide "jet kit" for the stock carb. They're EVERYwhere, same carb that's used on Sporty's, big twins, etc, all the way up until they killed the carb in '07. The kit comes with a new throttle blade spring, lightened throttle blade, an assortment of both main and idle jets, shims and needles (and instructions, complete with pictures for the big words, which is nice for me).

If your dealer is a "we don't do Buell" dealer, just go in and right off the bat ask for a jet kit for an '05 Sporty. Recent enough they should know what you're talking about, no questions asked...

If you still have no luck, send me an email at jgoetz@hdoffrederick.com, or a parts request through buelloffrederick.com.

Yes...we're a sponsor... : )

If I remember corre3ctly, the 05's were the first yeat of fuell injection for the sporty.

The Dynojet is a waste of money.
Get a low and high speed jet and your good.
If you want to get real fancy, raise the needle about .050" with a shim washer. You can get them at hobby stores, they use them on RC car axels..

Al at American Sport Bike has everything you need.

'07 was the first EFI Sporty.

'04 was the first year of rubber mounts in the XL family.

'05 was....well....nothing really happened in '05. '06 was first year six speed (Dyna), new frame for Dyna; '07 saw the six speed throughout the big twins; '08 was first year throttle-by-wire in Touring (with a 6 gallon tank)...but nothing really groundbreaking happened in '05.

What will the .050" shim on the needle do? Also I have looked at a few of the suggested sites for carbs but still fail to find a 190 main jet. I see 180's and 200's. Am I missing something. By the way I really appreciate all the input you guys have been giving me.

Here's some info on modifying the CV carb that explains things in layman's language with links to Harley part numbers for jets, needles and other goodies.

I must be missing something because this skips the 190 main jet on the list also. : ( But it did mention to go just 10 above what the stock jet is, so I may pull the carb tonight and just go to a harley dealer and see if they have this style jet.

I finally got back at it and pulled the carb off. The slow jet is a 42 and the main jet is 195. Tomorrow I'll take her for a ride and do the gas cap vacuum check, if that doesn't work I guess I'll just bite the bullet and take it to the shop : (

the 195 should be fine, rejet the slow to a 45, clean it all, and put it back together

Go 2.5 or 2.25 turns out on the mix screw, too. You may have to drill a cover off to access it...but with a 195 you'll probably be OK at 2.25 turns.
