I am about to put my M2 in the shop for a the final work before spring. I am getting the trans worked on. I have gone thru the entire bike myself except the trans and am trying to make it the best 5 speed possible. I am doing the following.

1. Baker smooth shift kit.
2. New gaskets and seals.
3. Synthetic fluid.
4. Updated shifter.
5. Mueller power clutch

I think this tranny had a hard 7000 miles. It is a B*TCH to get into neutral and it is the notchiest tranny I have ever driven.

I read on a post somewhere that replacing the 1st and 2nd gear is recommended and not expensive. Isn'nt there a clutch update for these also?? Does anyone have the part numbers for those gears for a 2000 M2. Any other updates or suggestions on making the best tranny without going crazy.

Thanks

1st off, short of a Baker 6-speed, you've got a tuber's dream tranny - good approach

2nd gear [only] was upgraded - approx $100 for the 2 gears

my M2 with the EZ shift is WAY too sensitive about neutral [green lite-wise, idling on k'stand, etc. - not engagement-wise] -
make sure your tech knows how to set the neutral detente & neutral switch correctly

overall, you're gonna love it

once you've put on some meaningful miles, please repost back about the Muller -
$150 has put me off, but.....

I have two friends running the Mueller on Softails and they cannot believe the difference in smoothness also. You can get hydraulic clutch like the Duc's but that it $300+. Not needed. I was thinking about Baker shift forks they come in steel and brass. I do not know which if any I would get. I know I will be in the tranny for about $600 in parts and the mechanic is a backyard racer guy, that is affordable. But the tranny can make or break a good ride. I have done everything to the engine I want for now, except the oil pump gear. I even did the machined timing cup, Buell race ignition, crane coil, blueprinted carb. I kept the stock cams because of my laid back riding style. I like the curve like it is over the X1, 3000 rpm+ band. I figure $1000 for a perfect 5 speed instead of $2500 for the 6 speed is great, most of my runs will under 150 miles.

I originally wanted one so bad when I first got the bike. It was high priority. I have heard nothing but good things BUT when I weighed my use which was 99% local and trips under 100 miles it did not make sense $$ wise. Losing 500 RPM at 70 is OK but you have to do alot of miles to justify it in my mind. Married, 2 kids, etc. You know it.

Instead of the Mueller, you might consider just replacing the regular clutch spring with the new one from the Ulysses?
Close to about the same effect, for $26 instead of $145. Recently did this on mine, I don't/wouldn't even think about the Mueller any more.

Straight drop in replacement, no other parts needed.

No I had the Baker6 installed by Vallejo Buell, and had them put in the spring at the same time. The 6-speed kit includes the Smooth Shift Kit, as well as the billet trap door and extra cog.

Clutch is lighter now, and shifts like a jap bike, over all. Very big improvement. I would guess the Smooth Shift Kit is the biggest part of that easy shifting, but the light clutch is cool too.

Replace the spring plate in your clutch pack with these:

37913-90 - steel plate (need two)
37911-90 - friction plate (need one)

Costs about $37 for parts, and if you're changing the clutch spring then it will only take you 5 extra minutes.
