Sounds like maybe your clutch plates are sticking together when the oil is cold. I generally blip the throttle a few times with the clutch disengaged to break them free for a silent shift into 1st from neutral.

Try it and see if it helps. Don't blip it like a madman, just rev it sharply a few times with the clutch in and then shift into first when the engine returns to idle. I do this all the time and get a silent drop into first.

Before you start your bike, pull the clutch in with the transmission in 1st and push the bike a few feet. You'll feel the clutch plates stick and then free up when the surface tension of the oil between the plates is broken. This will give you an indication of what is causing the clunk when you shift into first from neutral and it's this 'stick' that blipping overcomes. Don't fret though, it's entirely normal.

You can also break the plates free by pulling the clutch in and letting the engine idle for about 30-45 seconds. The herky-jerky synchopated idle will free the plates up without blipping the throttle.
