are the swingarm bearings the same ones as in the steering neck? how do you remove and install the races? is a special tool required?

OR, on the R+R, there's more than one way to skin that cat. My preferred method (Assuming you can't knock the races out from the opposite end) is to lay a weld bead around the inside of the race, and it will contract and fall out. Then I use the old as a driver to drive in the new.

When I did mine, I used a brass drift, and carefully knocked them out. Heating the swing arm w/a hair dryer or torch helps.

On install, I put the outer races in a baggie and put them in the freezer overnight. Gently heated the swing arm as above, then tapped the new races in using a 1/2in drive socket I had that was just smaller than the race.

Blake, the bearings ARE the same. HD part 48300-60.
I used a sealed version on my neck, I've never replaced my swingarm bearing on my M2.
Sorry, I don't have the part number for the SKF sealed version. I forgot to write it down.
I think it's still in the KV somewhere.

There was a REALLY cool Jim's ® brand tool specified for this.I bought it.It does a few different bearing sizes.I've done Sportster now as well as my X1 headstock AND swingarm bearings.

A useful tool i recommend

steering head bearings and swingarm bearings are the same. the swingarm requires seals. I can try and find the part numbers for you.

Jodie, On tubers the stock swingarm bearings are not sealed.
They are the same part number as the stearing head bearings.
However, you can install the sealed Timkin versions I mentioned above.

My parts manual shows the same number bearings as HippyJoe above.I suspect my swingarm may be different though as,my "Seals" for the swingarm are number#48430-99Y

Doing those bearings were fun.In my head(only) i felt the new ones were ten times better.BUT..the old ones really weren't that bad..

Hey all, I cannot for the life of me find my manual, and I'm attempting to pull the swingarm off my '01 S3. I would appreciate any help I can get. The swingarm is the only thing left on the frame as of now...

The swingarm is the only thing left on the frame as of now...

Yeah...but it doesn't attach to the frame.It attaches to the swingarm support block.THAT,is bolted to the engine case.

Support block is no longer bolted to the engine case, and the swingarm sure as shit is still connected to the frame at the pivot points (T65 or T70 bolt I believe). So exactly how does it not attach to the frame?

Oh...i'm so sorry. I only related MY experience on my X1.No torx involved with mine either.

I removed the frame,THEN i removed the swingarm,THEN i removed the swingarm support block.

The T65 bolts you describe connect via vibration isolators the frame to the swingarm mounting block; the mounting block in turn supports the swingarm via the swingarm bearings.

You'll need to remove those T65 bolts in order to separate the frame from the swingarm mounting block. There's more to it than that. Please read the service manual first.

The copy of Buell's old online service manual for the 1997/98 S1 is available in the "Knowledge Vault - Manuals..." section here on BadWeB. It includes the information you need to remove your S3's swingarm.
