I have the opportunity to pick up a 2002 M2 that someone pulled the motor out of for a bobber project. How hard is it to find a replacement notor? I am looking for this to be a chop/streetfight project anyways so if I need to piece it together the nI won't be heartbroken. That being said, what are some choices for aftermarket engine builders that I could get higher performance out of? Also, is $1000 a fair deal for a 2002 M2 w/ 2500 miles- no motor? I a mreally looking forward to my first motorcycle project and the M2 seems like it would look good next to my 9r.

I think $1000 is a fair deal if it is close and you don't have to pay another $500 for shipping. I have seen engines go for as low as $900 on ebay. I am not aware of any aftermarket engines, but the Sportster fit until 03 (or whenever they changed to the rubber mount). Then get the performance with wiseco, millenium, 1250 kit, etc... In any way you will have a fun time with this project. Here's my winter-fun. Started out with a 99 M2 roller....

M1

By the way the engine I found for my roller does not have any engine#. Never had - it was not filed out or anything. Could this be aftermarket casings? Just wondering....

if EVERYTHING except the motor is there, and has been taken care of, and is in good shape, it sounds like a fun way to spend $1000.

You know, I wish you well on your project, but if lot's of folks are buying cheap Buells to use the engine for a chopper, it's the Engine that is desirable. So if you have a rolling chassis without motor, that puts you right in the same boat and bidding against all the chopper builders for the next available engine donor.

Just thinking out loud here, but the real bargain would be to just buy a whole bike. Sure the chassis is cheap but also useless by itself. If you have to buy an engine for $1500, you're back to square one.

I've seen M2s here for sale for $2500, clean, running, etc, just unappreciated.
This was a $9,000 bike not that long ago.
Sportsters and Buells can't hold a candle to big twins on re-sale value.

if you want a hot rod motor, i'd be calling nallin racing. one of the sponsors here. you could have one hell of a ride. it cost me close to 4k to put the bike back on the road after my motor went. that is including a few other extras and some performance parts. i'm sure you could get away with less than half that with the same results if you did it yourself.(maybe)

Sounds like you need a 100" S&S Sportster motor...

Find a crashed Sporty and use that mill with a set of Thunderstorm heads. That bike is gonna be worth it. You won't want to part with it. TT

There is a '97 Buell 1200 for sale right now on Ebay. Lets see how high this one goes for, eh? Quite a few days left on this auction. The motor is in Iowa. TT Current bid is $200 The more I think about this is a '97 it will not have the thunderstorm heads-forget it

If you do not have to pay shipping, you are getting everything ready to drop the motor in....forks, wheels, frame, title, wiring, cables, not too bad. I have been collecting parts myself on ebay. I ran across one of these in the past for around 750 bucks plus shipping. the only problem, was when my shipper showed up to pick it up, the guy said it was stolen the night before. Never got my money back.

I am gathering up enough S2 parts to build another S2. All I am needing is a motor also....so....if any of you guys run across motors for 900 or 1000 give me a call. I have been bidding on them for months. they always go up to 2500 or 3000 plus dollars. at that price, I can just find a complete bike, like talked about above.

I have a 97 m2. they did not have thunderstorm heads and pistons for that year. I installed them later. rex

not a bad price. you have everything ready to go but the motor...fairly inexpensive. forks, wheels, frame, wiring, etc.

my 97 did not have thunderstorm heads and pistons. had to add them.
