A week after buying Buttercup, my '01 M2L, I was still on break in, and being pretty good about it.
While buzzing at a mellow 55 through an Orchard I know about with a sweet "S" turn ( marked 20 mph ) as I came around the 2nd turn, I see a truck load of apples has been dumped in the road. Tire tracks & applesauce. I'm at about 45 deg. leaned over, 55 mph. I say a bad word, my hand convulses & clamps the 2 fingers already on the lever, and the Cyclone rears up on the front wheel, twitches vertical, the rear wheel bounces, goes back into a stoppie, and firmly thumps level as I stop. 2 feet from applesauce.

My panic stricken brain is still screaming "I just got this thing!-" as all motion ceases. I pat the gas tank and say out loud, "I'm keeping you".
I take no credit for the save. At all.

i know the feeling. i was trying to figure out how to do a wheelie(still can't and really don't want to anymore) but i did try a couple times and the one time i swear it went over a 45 degree angle but when it came back down it kept on rolling straight like i had planned it. i was impressed.

Both these stories are funny, and now I know I'm not alone. I was in front of a friend's house on my M2, they all ride straight 4's. I was standing there doing a burn out when all of a sudden my hand slipped of the break and the front end was in the air, I thought I was going to die, but little did I know I was impressing all the spectators who thought that was a move I had to have been practicing in private. She came down straight, I took a bow, and canceled all of my afternoon plans for a nap and some alone time with my shaking knees.

We were ahead of the Arkansas State Patrol, following a kid in an Impala , running 100 m.p.h.+ for an hour. The cop was back a few cars but could not pass to catch up with any of us. We lose the Impala, cross a state line, and the trooper pulls up along side us at 80 m.p.h. and then CRANKS the wheel and does a 180 degree turn back to Arkansas. We brought the bikes back up to 90. I was riding behind a Buick full of old people one day and I could tell they were lost because they were going like 15 and I could see that they kept looking around. Before I know it they slam on the brakes hard right in front of me and I end up grabbing the brakes, soon enough I was about 2 ft behind their bumper looking down on the trunk doing and endo. I ended up landing it but I bottomed out because I was so high. Not fun...

i just remembered one that i have not thought about since it happened, i was driving thru a local college town on a two lane "STRIP" i was riding next to two college girls that were looking my way ad doing the little giggle thing. My testosterone kicked in and i see we are approaching a red light in a 30 mph zone and i decide to ride a stoppie, that should impress em i thought! well i apply front brake the back comes off the ground but it starts to go right, i let off the front brake and the bike lands slightly sideways to the direction of my travel the bike gave me a few slow speed wide tank slappers my foot found contact with ground in a last ditch effort to stabilize and twist my ankle and my testes find contact with the manta tank, it hurt but only me not the bike, i stopped looked over and they didnt look over and laugh so whatever. kinda funny sequence blake

Stompin' a Groove down U.S. 17 south in NC, Virginia Blue, My 97 Cyclone is in full gallop at 80mph. Some old lady in a beat up Oldsmobile pulls out in front of me from a blind driveway about 500 ft ahead. I grab some clutch, start clenching the front brake and feathering the rear - but the bike keeps heading for her trunklid - a little more rear brake, bam! the rear wheel locks, starts to go sideways. Too terrified to panic, I back off the rear brake, keepin the clutch lever squeezed, The ass-end straightens back out, and by the grace of God - the six piston PM has finally slowing me from gaining on granny. I rode another 3 miles to gas station before I checked my shorts......

My first time at Deals Gap last year, we were at the gas station gabbin' and gawkin' when I see a guy on a KTM motard doing a graceful wheelie all the way up the road. Sweet. I figure this is the time to show everyone what I got, so I warmed the bike up and as I was leaving the parking lot, Gentleman_jon was saying something to me, but I couldn't be bothered right then... I had important stuff to do.

I pulled out of the gas station and idled up the road. All my years of wheelie experience told me this was going to be a 1st gear, totally on-the-throttle wheelie. I set myself up in the seat, throttled up to pre-launch rpm and let fly: my front end immediately shot to the left and the rest of the bike followed into the opposite lane. I tried to use body english to get pointed right again... vainly. The road camber was fighting me the whole way, but I couldn't quit with all the people watching (there were scores of them at the gas station... of course).

I finally realized this was one of the occasions where there was no way out and let the front end come back down... and promtly went into a tank slapper that was mercifully short, but it still looked like I was about to be spit off with my legs flailing about. I was able to keep the bike on the road and just kept going. Maybe no one would recognize me and hell, I don't live anywhere near Deals Gap so the embarassment was only going to be temporary.

When I finally saw Jon again, I asked him what he was trying to tell me as I left. He said, "Uh... I don't know. You should take it easy on the wheelies, Dan". Damn... that was good advice in hindsight, Jon.

And of course, for the rest of the weekend no matter where I was (North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia), some stranger would come up to me and say, "Heeey... nice wheelie, man". Even weeks later here on the BadWeb, someone said, "We never met, but, hey, I saw that wheelie".

Bike undamaged, ego destroyed.

I guess it could always have been worse... that's what I keep telling myself.

Riding up the Mountain, there's a nice Cafe where you can park both sides of the road (Location, location, location) and have a Double-shot Long black whilst checking out the other parked rides.

It's all about the Approach and Departure - so come time for me to make the latter, I've fired up the M2 and let her idle for just long enough...

I decided that the good folk still seated at the Cafe needed a "Double Shot" of the Black M2 so instead of turning right to head homeward I would turn left and do a u-bolt a bit further up the mountain and head back home past the cafe for the second time.

So, left I went nice and steady so as not do something unforeseen or unforgettable....

Went on for a bit until I found my ideal u-turn shoulder and did a 180 - but stopped for the truck and cars before heading back towards the cafe.

Looking right - No more traffic - away I go - AAAAHHHH!

In my concentrating on the oncoming traffic I had failed to see that the shoulder that I was on, fell away into a gravel ditch and further on down the steep-side of the Mountain Range. I was in Trouble!

The M2 started to slide down taking me with it and brakes were useless in the gravel so I NAILED it and somehow the bike as if lifted by Pegasus himself shot up the side of the ditch like a skater in a bowl and righted itself at the top with nothing more that a slight headshake to show for the ordeal!

The previous moment had passed and the M2 was not even phased about it -

In my disbelief of what had just happened, I just thanked God, engaged first and rumbled slowly back towards the Cafe for what could have been an ill-fated "never-to-be" second pass!

I passed by the Cafe Dwellers all oblivious to the hellish moment that my bike and I had just shared, and by that stage I couldn't care whether they were looking at me or not!

I stopped down the road a bit to check her out. I should've damaged something on her, especially seeing that I was brake-rotor-deep in gravel a few minutes ago.

My Lesson - On coming traffic is not the only thing to watch out for when u-turning on a Mountain Range!
