Former '02 S3T owner, current Uly owner, am considering getting a '99 X1 as an around town/commuter bike as I've loaded up my Uly with hard bags and stuff and with its height its a bit cumbersome around town. Any thoughts, or things I should pay particular attention to/know about? Don't know much about Buells of that vintage - seems like with the S3 there were some significant improvements in the post 02 bikes. |

99 FI had their problems, not all but some. The usual updates that your 02 already had, should have been done by now. Joe |

One of mine is a '99 X1. Watch for the throttle cable recall, which was a small clamp added to the cables where they secure into the throttle body.It was added because if the cables somehow became loose they could dislodge and either peg or lock shut the throttle body. The front rotor also has an upgrade/superceded part with MORE locating buttons. My FI has always performed flawlessly, except when i replaced the fuel line with NON-FI rated hose and it blew a leak. Not much else sticks out, check the isolators. Cool bike...my beater, but in pristine condition. |

If you have access to it, send me the VIN and I can pull any open recalls before you get the bike. Other than that, just look it over good and hard like it was your S3 - same genes, similar (if any) trouble spots. |

I've had mine since Feb. 2000 and have had almost 22k mostly trouble free miles. I've heard horror stories but mine must have been built in the middle of the week or something. It's a fun ride if you like the torque. Bikes of that vintage. lol We're not THAT old! |

Maybe not vintage, but 9 model years old! How did that happen? I swear I was buying a late model motorcycle 2 years ago..... Put me in the no FI problems on my 99 category. Other than paper gasket oil leaks and doing the usual upgrades before there is a problem, my 99 S3 has been very reliable. |

...thanks for all your help. Bought it today - now to xfer the $ and do the paperwork. Then it's off to American Sport Bike for some powdercoated headers and perhaps an extra large metal oil tank. ...update: ok, so the shopping didn't stop at the oil tank. Do the Tuono mirrors fit an X1, or only newer bikes? (Message edited by Old_Mil on November 30, 2007) |

Tuono mirrors fit fine on tubers. I just put mine on my S1 and I love them! They have great visibility and they look soooo much better than the lollipops imo. Make sure you get them for $18 per mirror. Apparently it's listed as $18 in one part of their system and $36 (or something) in another part. Congrats on the bike! |

Don't forget to go to your local dealer and order the plugs for your old mirror mounts. They come stock on all Firebolts and fill the hole where your mouse ear mirrors were. I put them on my S1W when I went to bar end mirrors, and it really finished the look. |

The 36 was for the pair, I know I looked them up at the shop I play at. Either way they are a steal at that price. Aprillia has a funny way of listing some parts and straightforward for others. The owner of the shop has a hard time with certain items and at the next dealer meet he's gonna propose a few changes. |

Old Mil- Good job on the X1, I'd like to ride one sometime just to see how different they are from the S3s. If you are interested in getting on our mailing list for the Waterloo club events send me your email. I didn't get a response on my recent note. p.s. If you get anyone else excited about Buells, my S3 is still available. |

Hi IA Mike, I sent a reply, wonder what happened. That certainly is a good looking S3 you've got. Hope it finds a good home. Go ahead and add me to the Waterloo club list: applemac_g4@hotmail.com |

...ok: here's the bike... http://i3.ebayimg.com/03/i/000/c3/9e/e8eb_1.JPG ...any thoughts on what color Corbin seat I should go with? I'm thinking maybe something a little different than the standard black leather. http://www.corbin.com/materials/ |

First thing you need to know is American Sport Bike is your best asset when you buy the early Buell,Al & family really make it easy to get parts and info. First thing is, get rid of those shift & brake levers for the billet stuff, second is the front rotor, if your bike is anything like mine it shakes like Katherine Hepburn at idle and that rotor sounds like it's gonna come off! Depending on what area you live & ride in watch out for the hooligans, riding with them can get you in trouble...enjoy |
