Ok I have been searching for awhile now and just figured I would ask everyone. I am looking at getting a 00-02 X1, BUT I am now considering a M2 because it is still carburated. This is the only selling point that the M2 has to me. I LOVE the X1 but from what I understand the fuel injection will limit me in the future if and IF I plan on doing improvements. I like the idea of turn key fuel injection, not sitting there to wait for the idle to come to. So I guess what I am asking everyone is the fuel injection that limiting? Are the carbs all that bad? Also what are you veiws on each bike?

Thanks for everything,

If you can, get an '02 no matter which model. They are the least troublesome. Carbs are easier to build. I have FI and changing the module is easy enough, though more expensive than changing a needle. Neither bike will be a rocket ship. If you are looking for pure speed, these are not the bikes, not to imply that they are slow. They will never compete w/ the likes of Hayabusa,Ninja etc. There are pros and cons to both. The X1 has the better suspension . I like the look of the X1. IMO go w/ the bike you like most and worry about the rest later. That being said it may come down to which is the better deal. In either case you will love the bike. There is no "wrong" tuber.

The main problem that I have is that I can't leave anything that I buy alone for a long period of time. So soon or later I am going to start changing things to get more power. I don't want one of these for speed. I like these bike just for what they are. A hell of a lot of fun. In fact I don't even like the hole crotch rocket scene. I like all the technology thats put into one but I won't own one.

Like Warlizard said, you can't make a bad choice on this one. It's just which one sparks your eye.
Both bikes are extremely easy to work on, to the point sometimes you can't keep your hands out of them, when you probably should.
I have the cyclone and wouldn't trade it for anything. But initially I bought it because it was carburated, now they have all the tools available to do your own FI.So you really can't lose on your choice.....Charlie

From what I understand with the FI all I will be able to do is an ECM, intake and exhaust. Well thats like stage 1 in my eyes. And if thats all I can do with it then i'm sold on the M2. On another note, whats all different in the two? Still the same motor and tranny right? Just different frame and suspension?

Well, my choice was simple; the X1 was injected and the pax seating piss-poor. I work on my own bikes. I chose the M2 and have never regretted it. Not once. Slapping on the HSR was so simple it was ridiculous. But we're talking about YOUR choice, not mine. You gotta go with what floats your boat, and nobody elses. If it makes you feel better, I've read of several people who've installed HSR series carbs on X1's doing away with the fuel injection. The feedback was fairly positive.}

I have both an '02 X1 and '02 M2. The X1 gets ridden ALL the time. I love 'em both, but to me, the X1 is the "winner" between the two for how I ride.

Having said that, they are both VERY grin inducing bikes. So find the one that floats your boat & have fun. If you want to "tinker" that much, you can always convert from FI to carb, and the info on "how to" is in the KV, so don't let that stop you/be a deciding factor.

Similar bikes, but not the same.

Frames: similar geometry (if not identical) and size

Front end: inverted on X1, "normal" on M2. Gives "better handling" nod to X1.

Seating: M2 for comfort, X1 for hanging off (narrower and smaller, easier to shift around)

Engine: aside from the obvious induction difference, the M2 has "standard" heads, lower compression, and low-rpm torquey cams. X1 has Thunderstorm top end, higher compression, and is cammed for high rpm power over low rpm torque. The M2 was conceived to be "rideable"; the X1 to be "powerful". Neither is boring : )

Couple little things - the earlier M2s had smaller fuel tanks and tail sections than the 99-up ones did. Also (and I forget the changeover year) the earlier M2s did not come with a tach; there was a kit available and many upgraded, but stock they were without tachs.

Either way (and it's been said before) - you're going to have a lot of fun on the bike. Just ride each one, and get the one that really speaks to you. If both speak to you...and you can afford it...get one of each. It's OK. You're among friends here ;)

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am leaning towards the X1, and always have, but i really wanted to hear from others experiences with the bikes for some sort of comfort on the decision. I know a guy that works out at the HD dealer here in town that has converted his X1 to carb. Needless to say he has hit the 100 hp and tq mark. If you can break it he has and had upgraded from there. Needless to say I just love how the X1 sits, it's plain sexy, lol. OK ANOTHER??? Anything in particular that was a problem with the X1 around 00-02 that could get costly if the previous owner was a jackass?

by the time they stopped making the tuber, they had just about all the issues worked out. very few and minor details. speed censors were upgraded if yours hasn't been changed and go's bad. a little leakage isn't nothing to worry about. the one thing that i really havng't seen here yet is whether your going to do any two up riding. if you are then go with the m2. if your not then the x1 is right for you. either way you won't be dissatisfied.

There are considerable differences between the 2000 and 2002. I have the 2000 X1 and love the bike but it had it's problems, most of which are well documented. Nothing that can't be addressed. When you decide on a particular bike, run the VIN to check for any recalls. You can also go to the KV or the X1-Files to see what things are common w/ your model. The later the model, the less concerns. BTW you can get 100/100 out of the X1, it just costs more. You can go to the sponsor section to see what kind of kits/upgrades are available.

No biggie, but I think you got some stuff mixed up here.

"Frames: similar geometry (if not identical) and size"

The X1 and M2 have different frames with different geometry - the X1 has a steeper rake angle. The M2 shares a similar frame and geometry (and lower pegs) as the S3.

"Front end: inverted on X1, "normal" on M2. Gives "better handling" nod to X1."

There isn't anything about the fork on an M2 that makes the handling 'worse' other than it's lack of external adjustability and low spring rate. I doubt (highly) that any rider could tell a difference in rigidity between either fork on public roads, but the USD fork is supposed to be more rigid.

An X1 turns in quicker because of it's steeper rake. If this is what you mean by 'better handling' then I'll cede the point. They were both delivered with identical rear suspensions in 2001-2.

"Engine: aside from the obvious induction difference, the M2 has "standard" heads, lower compression, and low-rpm torquey cams. X1 has Thunderstorm top end, higher compression, and is cammed for high rpm power over low rpm torque."

99-02 M2's have the same Thunderstorm heads and 10:1 compression as X1's. The earlier 97-98 M2 made less power than the latter ones, though.

From my own experience, here are what I find to be the biggest differences in an X1 and M2.

a) The X1 is quicker than the M2 by about a bike length for each gear. They both have identical ignition limited (6800rpm) top speeds. The M2 has a bigger midrange punch though.

b) The pegs are low on an M2. This is great for comfort, but they drag pretty easily in the twisties. Some riders will never notice this, but it is a major issue with most M2 riders I know. It was easy to raise them on my 00 model, but it's harder ($$$) on the 01-2 models because of the case mounted shift linkage.

c) I chose the M2 over the X1 strictly because of the FI on the X1. I had 24 years of carb experience in 2000 and didn't want it to go to waste. The stock carb is fine for the mods most owners do and rejetting is easy and cheap (just a few dollars for jets).

You'll have to make your own mind up here, but I always thought my decision to go carb was right based on the issues brought up constantly in the Knowledge Vault. Some riders never have FI problems and some riders have gone to the trouble of converting to a carb because of constant FI problems.

d) The swoopy X1 airbox has a reputation for not sealing well. It's not the same as the airbox on the M2 - they are both hideous. If you toss it on an X1, you'll have to buy an accent kit for the tank to close out the sides. The M2 doesn't need this, but if you toss the airbox, there will be an unsightly mounting arm exposed.

And now, an observation: I never see X1's anymore. I don't recall seeing any at the last two gatherings of Buells in North Georgia.

I have a 2000 X-1,I'm in the process of building the motor, and adding upgrades. How soon are you looking to purchase a bike? My bike has 10,000 miles and was purchased with a blown motor. I'm going to rebuild it from the flywheels up. It will be a new motor, but a 1250. If your interested, let me know

i own a 2000 red stripe x1, cant say enough good things about it. whats not to like about FI? I have heard some stories from a powersports harley drag shop around me that the guy made an X1 so mean he couldnt ride it on the street anymore, with the FI. simple bolt ons put 90 horsepower to the wheel on my bike and it is enough to hold onto at high rpm's. People walk up to my X1 to this day and ask if its new, lol.

Warlizard was saying something about X1 files. Is it somewhere on this site or is it a whole different site? I have been trying to find it but can't.

Thanks,

You can't go wrong.

I bought a 2001 S3T. It has a race kit and runs great. I like it so well that I bought a 2002 M2 on an impulse. Then I put a Mikuni HSR 42 carb on the M2. Now it runs great too!

I would be hard to choose between them. They are different but both are great bikes.

The comments above are consistent with my experience so far.

Have fun and let us know what you decide.

Like all before have said it really boils down to which one you really want. When I bought my '99 as a leftover in 2000 the FI was a take it or leave it option for me but now that I have had it over seven years I don't know that I'd ever have another carb. Nothing against carbs but firing up at the first push of a button seems enjoyable to me especially when my buddies have their chokes out and warming up.
As for mods with the FI you can go to a 1250 with no problems and everything is plug and play which is nice. But again it boils down to the aesthetics of which one you like. Click on my profile for a pic of my X1.

BTW I have almost 22k miles and no problems at all with the FI. I realize with it being a first year and all some have had problems but fortunately I've not had that gremlin in mine.

I just pick up a 2002 M2 and I love it!!! If you are a good size 6 foot or bigger an X1 is tight IMO. I also ride a FI Roadking. FI is great until you screw with it!!!! My Power Commander does the job but it took a long time to get it right and if I change anything IT HAS TO BE DONE ALL OVER AGAINor $250 for a dyno tune

With the 1250 kit do you have to upgrade injector size or anything? Or can you even get bigger injectors? I seen that you can get bigger throttle bodies(50mm) and intakes but what about the injectors? Also is the power commander worth the money and do you have to do it when you do intake and exhaust? I am thinking that you do since you are adding more air and not fuel, but i thought I would ask the people with experience. I am new to the bike world. I've been a GM and Nissan tech for five years so I'm not that mechanically stupid, lol.

Cars (GM) are alittle more forgiving with mods.. I installed slip-on muffelers on my roadking and my bike ran very rich at lower RPMs. I don;t know about Buell but my RK with a 95ci kit did not need injector, just another tune.

Cuelbuell, I've had 34K plus miles with my '99 S3. Not a problem with the FI. I run a race ecm, race header and Force intake. My bike is pushing close to 90 HP at the rear wheel and is plenty fast (140 top end and 11.60's in the 1/4). I've embarrassed more than a few brand x types at short tracks and at "the Dragon" i.e. Deals's Gap. You need to do the "stage 1" as you call it and ride the bike to see if it's what you like. It is very easy to carb an x1 but I think you'll find that a slightly modified FI bike has plenty of power. If power and speed are a must, buy a 1125R. I find that the tubers slightly modified are plenty strong and fast.

Don't waste your money on the Power Commander. Haven't heard many good things about it. Just go w/ the race chip and mechanical upgrades, ie. engine kits/headwork etc.

Check through the search engine because there have been lots of threads about the 1250 kit and not needing bigger injectors. Before I tell more than I know check there. Some of the names I remember off the top of my head were Firemanjim and Chasespeed. If I remember correctly they have both done the swap and I think fireman has a 90 incher also. Man that would be a sweet ride. Anyway, any question you could ever ask has probably been gone through if you can find it. Good luck.
