Howdy,
I just turned 10K on my S3 and I have been changing the oil every 2500 miles, with Mobil 1 Twin cyl. synthetic.
Going by the service manual, I would like to check/adjust the ignition timing. Is there a work-around for using a breakout box to hook up the voltmeter?
Can a breakout box be purchased?

I also noticed the motor seems to rev more freely, and also the bike is a bit louder (stock muffler, ecm and air filter).
It also seems to ping a bit under load - depending on the gas I run.
Has anyone else noticed their bike running better/worse at the 10K mark?
Thanks for all your help!
Here is the first suspension bridge to cross the Texas Colorado river - all hand built! We rode there this weekend.
Cheers

My X1 has many miles.
I have never adjusted the timing.
The TPS sensor drifts a bit over time and Oxygen sensors get slow.

Why are you changing your oil so often?

If your bike is running right, I would just leave it be.

You can get a clear plug for the timing hole (American Sport Bike?) and check it w/a timing light, or....

Don't have the SM in front of me, but you can pull the rubber plug out of the back of the ECM plug and check the timing statically with a multimeter. Have to check the book, though, to find out which wires (pins) are the ones.

If you haven't had anything apart, it shouldn't have changed. As stated above, if it's running fine, the timing should be good. Hope this helps, Dave.

Mobil 1 is a very high grade oil and often delays break-in of the rings. It took 8000mls on my softail to break-in and it just like you said... louder, free revving, pinging= MORE COMPRESSION! Now when I have a new engine I use regular oil for the first 3000 mls and then switch to synthetic

I see you have the stock ECM, that's where your pinging is coming from.
Replacing it with the race version and resetting the TPS will TOTALLY change the personality of your S3.
The midrange power dip will be gone as will the pinging. It will be snappy right off idle. It will be the best part you buy for your bike.
If you love the bike now, wait till you change the ECM.
Seriously! Ask any X1 or S3 owner that's done it.

Brad

Oh yeah, the louder sounds you are hearing are the sound of a happy Buell tuber motor!
When they get broke in, the get a bit more "character" to them.
On the S3's and X1's the valvetrain gets a bit louder. Just part of the normal music of a Buell engine.

Neat Huh?

Change out your ecm, air filter and muffler.
Cheapest new bike you'll ever buy!
I also hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving.

Thank you all for your responses! It is great to have you verify that my motor is running better after hitting 10K miles.
I was beginning to wonder if I was crazy!

I rode my brother's X1 - fitted with a race ecm - and loved how the flat spot in the midrange was gone!

I just got back from a vacation in North Carolina (we trucked the bike there from Austin,TX) and rode the heck out of the S3.
As a result of the trip I am doing the following:
1. Penske Shock (stock shock blew out).
2. Brake pads.
3. Gold Valve damping kit and new fork springs.
4. New tires.
5. Race ecm.

I think I will extend my oil change to 3500 mile intervals.

Cheers, and Thanks!
