To make a long story short I bought a used Race ECM form someone on this board that turned out to be bad and caused my bike to be in the shop for over 2 months this summer. When we finally figured out the ECM was bad I had them order a new one. After being on order for several weeks it came in last week and it seems that the new ECM is much smaller than the old one. They double checked the part number and everything seems to check out ok. The bike hasn't been ridden on the street yet but is has made several dyno runs and they say it runs great. Could this be an XB ECM? Will they work on a tuber?

I thought that you tried the original ECM when you were trying to figure out what was wrong.

I asked AL about the ecm swap thats a NO, the new Ecm is smaller as it is built with the new ECM tech but it is Tuber specific

Could you please post the name and location of the dealer ship that kept your bike for two months over a bad ECM.

PLEASE.

Thanks

When I installed the faulty ECM, I also installed a Force exhaust. The ECM caused upper RPM issues and the Force caused lower RPM issues. We thought we were chasing one problem so we concentrated on the low RPM issues first. 2 months later we figured out that the low RPM issues were caused by the Force and they seem to be pretty common. Once we got past that, the issue was easy to diagnose. The dealer that works on my bike is GREAT. This one was just a tough one to diagnose.

So you are saying that the new Race ECMs are smaller than the old ones?

I don't think that there are race ECUs for tubers that are a different size.
Perhaps you have an XB race ECU?

Maybe I do. It seems to run good on the dyno and it makes good power. I will pick it up this weekend and see how it runs on the street.

there are three different ECU
s for Tubers along with three different Race units.

One for FI tubers, One for Carbed tubers 95 to 2000 and one for carbed tubers 2001 to 2002.
And there for "Race Use Only" counter parts.
The FI and 01-02 tuber ECU's could easily be confused with the XB models.

The dealer looked it up on the computer and the new smaller ECM's part number matches what the catalog says. They were on back order when they ordered it so maybe the race ECMs have been changed to the smaller design.

Got my bike back yesterday and it runs much better than it ever has. The new computer got rid of almost all of the under 3000 rpm studder that the force pipe causes. The new race ECM is definitely smaller than the old one. I don't see a part number on it. It just has a white sticker that says For Race Use Only. It also has a spade terminal in between the two wiring harness plugs. We couldn't figure out what might plug in there. Any ideas?

That connector is for the special heated seat option that racers use.

That's a good one.

I'm a little disappointed, I thought some one would know what it is for.

I don't think they had it on the race ecm, but it sounds almost like the data port on the TwinTec that I put on my FLHP. I don't recall the race ecm's being "mappable", though....

Maybe a pic would help?

I will try to post pics tomorrow. It has the two large plugs on the side of the ecm like they all do but this one has a single male spade terminal sticking out between the two plugs.

Well, here is the pic. Anyone got any ideas on what the center terminal is for? I was looking and noticed a ECM just like this but without the white sticker on an 06 XB. It had as single wire connector pluged into the center terminal.

Not sure where I read it but the race ECM did change in size but is tuber specific -- I had the same concerns when I bought mine --

The HW for the new tuber race ECM is the same as the HW for the XBs. And as such, they have the same center tab that is used on the XB12's for the exhaust servo. You can disregard it, and DON'T ground it.

Ever tried to go out and buy a new Pentium 1 computer these days? You can't, they aren't made any more. I'm sure Kimball (the folks that make the Buell ECM) had the same problem trying to get the components to build the old Buell race ECM. So they surely had to port the code and calibrations over to the new HW.

Pinouts are basically the same, connectors are, hole spacing is, but the package is slightly smaller.

Is it just me, or does it look like they just used a garden-variety P-touch labeller for the "for race use only" sticker? LOL.

Great info on the pin, though...thanks!

The label is a bit odd.
My race brain has race use only stenciled on it in white letters.
But if it works, it works, right?
