Custom Buell M2 Cyclone in Paughco Frame, Chain Conversion, RAT

My tranmission vent tube is spewing a lot of oil, can anyone on this board please help, I know this probably isnt the right place but I am new and if you could point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. Right now the extra oil is serving as a makeshift "automatic chain oiler" but it its also a rear tire and exhaust pipe oiler too and I am getting a little tired of the smoke curling up off the pipe everytime I stop at a light and people yelling that my motorcycle is on fire in traffic.

Josh- that may mean you have a blown crankshaft oil seal. Engine oil will blow past that seal, and over-fill the primary, until it comes out the vent tube. Are you losing engine oil any faster than normal? You can remove the clutch cover and see if the level's too high there as well.

PS- I'd suggest posting a question like this on the "Quick Board" next time.

If that is the problem then will my engine oil slowly deplete til gone if not remedied?

No, it'll just slowly deplete to the point you have no oil pressure and then your engine will grenade.

Just to make sure, this is a picture of the tube that it is coming out of, this is the tran vent correct?

So should I open my oil tank on the front make sure it has plenty of oil? Would that be a good next step?

Yes, that's the transmission/primary case vent hose.

Yes, you should be checking your oil tank fairly regularly even if this weren't a problem. These air-cooled motors tend to use some oil.

I wasn't the one who installed the oil tank, how do I know what level it needs to be within that oil tank? Would the only way be to drain all the oil and put in what the factory recommended amount is? And if I understand right, that oil should not be getting into the transmission oil area, those should be seperated and if they are properly seperated overfilling the engine oil wouldn't matter for that vent because it wouldnt get there? If its overfilling problem and not the gasket, then its the overfilling of the TRANSMISSION OIL that would cause the splatter and not the OVERFILL of that oil tank? Thanks for all your advice so far

Right- that's the best way to check it. Drain all the oil, change the filter, add exactly 2.5 quarts and ride it far enough to warm it up. Shut it off and immediately check the oil level- that's the normal oil level for your bike. Don't wait very long after you shut it off to check it as the oil may gradually run back into the crankcase, giving a false low reading.

Yes, the engine and transmission/primary are separate, each with their own oil supply.

It's possible it's an overfilled transmission, but it seems like you'd blow that oil out pretty quickly and it'd get to the right level.

Failed crankshaft oil seals are the most common cause of this. Check threads in the "Knowledge Vault" for more info.

Sorry one more question, the oil depleting rapidly from the oil tank after I fill to the correct level would be a dead giveaway for the crankcase seal correct?

Also, if I check my transmission fluid/primary level and it is currently overfilled, then that doesn't guarantee its the crankcase because it could have been overfilled? AND if this is the case, draining some of that should make it go away correct? UNLESS its the crankcase in which case I drain it and then it is promptly RE overfilled by the engine oil leaking in and the spraying continues?

You have explained it very clearly but I just want to make sure I understand fully before I start to try to diagnose and dig into this thing. I have a suspicious the previous owner may have just added to much oil to the transmission.

LASTLY, if it is the crankcase seal, will there be any symptoms of low engine oil I would notice if it is being drained into the primary/transmission case? Will it run super hot or rough or anything or will it just implode suddenly one day?

Sorry one last last LAST question. In the meantime I assume its never advised to block off that vent and that its there for a reason. The best I could do for a short term fix might be to just reroute the vent away from the bike for now if it will be a few weeks before I can do the big job replacing the gasket assuming thats the issue.
