It's harder to defend yourself legally when using a knife for self defense than a gun. Shouldn't be, but 'tis...especially if you're effective with it.

I finally got my NFA items and most of my son's guns back in my possession. She kept his Ruger MKIV pistol, not because she sees any value in its possession or use as a training tool, but because it was accidentally omitted from the divorce paperwork. What a jerk. She also kept all of his mags and ammunition.

But isn’t this idea of militant American citizens packing heat for freedom an anachronism? Only to people who never heard of Vietnam or Afghanistan. One of my favorite aspects of social media life is hearing from futon fighting force generals who have never fired a gun and are even afraid to play Call of Duty because it reinforces patriarchal gender roles. Their insight, when one mentions the need of all healthy, law-abiding citizens to buy guns and ammunition, is to insist that a bunch of civilians with AR-15s could never hope to prevail against the forces of the government which they hope to enlist in their cause of oppressing the American people. Except in Minneapolis, a bunch of disorganized scumbags packing torches and crowbars just ran a precinct of cops out of their building.

Even adjusting for the manifest incompetence of the Minneapolis PD, starting with the mayor and working on down to the flatfoots who apparently don’t understand the concept of breathing, that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement of the idea that we might as well just give up our rights if the fearsome agents of tyranny so demand. The fact is that an armed population is an essentially unbeatable force that would outnumber and outgun any outlaws claiming government authority who chose to violate their oath and wage war upon American citizens.

........
The one inspirational sight during the riots was a bunch of black Americans with modern rifles defending their businesses. That’s so American that it couldn’t be more American if there were eagles, a 1964 Mustang, and a Ted Nugent soundtrack cranking.

Gun control began with Democrats trying to control black Americans. Gun control today is Democrats trying to control all Americans. And that’s not going to happen. Buy guns and ammunition, because there can be no truly free people that is not also an armed people.

A childhood fantasy came true.
True story.
I walked into a store today with a bandana on and a 9mm on my hip.
Demanded money and got it.
(IE: I asked for change for a $20 bill.)
Got back to the car to make a get away, and got away clean.
Only in Murry County!

with this being a very gun friendly firearms thread, I though i'd pose the question...i'm fairly new to shooting and I wear progressive lenses in my glasses. I have ordered shooting glasses with an rx insert. has anyone here tried an upside down bifocal set up? only on dominant eye? what remedies have been successful? I have no interest in red dot or other non-iron sight set up.

I don't understand why the guy didn't stay with the car and drive on through?

Blue tape, huh?

Why bother? Anyone can get a hold of an extended magazine.

Anyone causing a fracas on camera in this day and age is a little dense. Facial recognition software is becoming quite common. It's not a matter of if people are going to get caught, but when.

Butbut...Rick...it LOOKS cool, and they do it in the movies! So, it MUST work....right?

And for Willie's question - I wear contacts for distance and am right on the edge of needing readers. But, I can use the front sight at the range and depth of field is enough for me to see the rear sight and the target, if I focus on the front sight. Arms length, it works fine. If I can't get a sight picture (i.e. if I have to point-shoot), I have a laser that's zeroed at 10 yards. Place dot, pull trigger, make hole.

And the .308 rifle has a Leupold scope on it ; )

Nearsighted, so I preferred single vision glasses, for shooting, but bifocals ( lined, old school ) worked too.

I put a magnifying scope on all my rifles, including a 2.5x power scout scope. That's because even with corrective lenses, a bullseye at 200 yards was, for me, a blur if visible at all.

That said, My technique was always, 1. put front & rear sights in alignment, 2. put front sight on target. It's impossible to focus on all three points at once, ( isn't it? ) so I don't even try.

I also find that aperture sights work fairly well on rifles.

True, True.

I would zero a handgun laser for fifty yards...otherwise the offset will be too great at longer ranges. Ask me how I know...

well, I am farsighted, so I have to my head back in order to see out of the lower portion of my glasses to get a clear view of my front sight. just a very awkward position. i'm just wondering if anyone has had lensed made with the up close portion of their bifocal on top for head tilted forward position. also, I've read that some shooters only do this for their dominant eye and leave the other eye as a distance lense.

Ah, Farsighted! Yes, you can try an upside down bifocal, Not the first time I've heard about that solution.

I suggest a single vision correction lens for the "other eye", to avoid visual confusion. There may be a big difference in WHERE you want the dividing line ( I don't suggest progressive bifocals, old school lined ones are better here ) depending on if you are shooting pistol or rifle. And your head position, especially on a shoulder arm.

For a cheap test, IF you can see fine at a distance without correction, is to buy a set of cheap reading glasses that allow you to clearly see the front sight, and just pop the lens out & put the reading correction lens in your non-prescription shooting glasses. A little tape will work temporarily and you can experiment with the corrective lens behind, or in front of the ballistic plastic.

Shoot with both eyes open and see if you can superimpose the front sight and target. It works for me with iron sights, and red dots, and scout scopes. It does take a little practice, and not everyone can do it.

And let us know how it works for you.

I just this February had new lenses installed, ( cataract surgery ) and am now forced to use reading glasses. ( I could have chosen close in lenses, and continued to use corrective lenses for distance ) My first pair of new bifocals should arrive next week. Thus I have a vested interest in your solutions. I haven't gone shooting since the Panicdemic.

BTW.
The local gun club rather hilariously chose to declare themselves closed, and only "allow" members to come shoot if they are "doing necessary maintenance work" on the ranges. ( Like picking up your brass ) An amazing number of folk show up Sunday mornings to clean the trap ranges. I can hear them from my house. : )

It’s been eventful around here lately!

I took an instructor course for the NRA in support for a buddy of mine. The instructor was pretty fun and got me to spend a little more on guns than I had planned recently! We also did Jack Wilson drills. We had to draw from concealment and put one in the T-box at 45 feet. I got it first try in under 3 seconds. Thats tricky without having people running for cover!

On the local front, I'm getting a little weary of shooters claiming that their gun or ammunition is faulty, when their lack of ability to hold their semi automatic pistol rigidity is the culprit 99% of the time.

Also, the frequency with which people jam their guns up when manually racking the slide is shocking.

That's because they want to be "gentle" with the slide...don't want to hurt anything now...

The "blame the gun" mentality...where have I heard that before...?

Wait.

I know.

Crime stats on the media! It's ALL the gun's fault!! Has NOTHING to do with the shooter!!

I never short stroked a pump shotgun until I tried my 870 in competition. I'd seen it, but until I was going for speed...

It's funny seeing my retired Marine Corps friend work an AR-15. Each move is sharp, purposeful, and works. I first thought he was being rough...... nope.

If there's one bad habit I've had, it's being over exuberant with pistol mag changes. I've inserted magazines hard enough to get over inserted/stuck, basepads flying off emptying the contents, metal basepads getting bent, and the top round presenting itself completely vertical in the feed way. I've had to consciously work on it.

I recently handily out shot a fellow Marine and SWAT officer. He claimed he was better with a rifle. He was supply and I infantry...so I guess it was to be expected. The guy was pretty cocky, so I expected some competition, at least. Nope. Pretty bad, he was. Good enough to score "expert" on their qualification course, though, he says. That was shocking to hear. Not the highest of standards, there.

I also found that the laser on my VP9 was no longer zeroed. It was hitting way low...and I can still shoot an Airweight revolver about as well as I can any handgun...albeit at a slower pace. That light on the VP9 still sucks, and my ChiCom high output LED emitter still hasn't arrived.

My son finally got to fire his M4A1 SOOMOD Block II clone. He said it had some kick, to which I laughed...because it doesn't...but he hasn't been able to shoot any real rifles for some time, now.

If I didn't know better, there could be a minor twinge of envy there. It's a pretty high quality amalgamation of parts.
20181208_095524 by Slick_Rick77, on Flickr

My own rifle is a little more accurate, but not nearly as cool.

I was firing the home D AR firearm in the current configuration. It does pretty damn well for a stubby 10.5" barrel, though the ejection pattern suggested being over gassed despite using commercial ammunition. Maybe that fancy McFarland one piece gas ring really does work better.
