I knew a preacher who carried while standing at the pulpit. The first time he pulled his glock out at a church potluck to show a member of the congregation, I knew I was at the right church.
That's as "sheepdog" as you can get.

I never understood people pulling their loaded carry guns for show and tell. People likely know what a gun looks like. Keep it in your pants.

In the Orlando night club shooting it took hours for officers to enter the building. In the Parkland shooting officers stood down until the gunfire subsided. The closest officer to the scene purposely stayed out of the line of fire and did not engage. Nobody should want to be those guys...knowing that doing nothing saved their own hide yet allowed a multitude of people to be killed.

On the 5.7mm it really only makes sense in the loads it was designed for...which you or I are not supposed to have...which is curious as armor piercing ammo and projectiles in 30-06 and .50BMG are rather easy and relatively inexpensive to aquire...simply because nobody has really fussed over it.

The pistol ends up underpowered and the rifle should be an SBR instead of a weird thing with long permanently attached shroud.

I agree.

First, it's bad tactics - now everyone knows that person carries. If a bad actor is in that group...they've just made note of who needs to be target number one. Also, innocents in that group have also made note, and will either hide behind that person or give away that person's element of surprise by expecting them / asking them to "do something" if anything goes down.

Second, it's a great way to freak people out who DON'T want to see a gun in public. And in today's world...that's a LOT of people.

If a friend who knows I carry wants to see my pistol, we pick a time to go to the range. It comes out of the holster to get fired, or to get cleaned. Period. There are special teaching moments with close friends, along the lines of "if anything happens to me, here's how you unholster the gun safely and clear the weapon before EMT's arrive"...but that is THE exception to the rule, and it is done with a dummy round in the chamber and a dummy round at the top of the magazine. That conversation has happened exactly one time.

If anything happens at one of my events...I hope I have the fortitude to do everything in my power to save lives and stop the threat. More than that...I hope nothing ever happens at one of my events. I pray this is like an extended warranty - you prepare, you get the coverage...and you never need it!

I'll show my gun to you lot, if we're standing around talking about guns and no strangers are present.

A mile away from me is a large Baptist Church. One day some guy walks in during a service, pulls out a gun and shoots at the preacher. The preacher held up his Bible but a bullet went through it and into him. It killed him right there. They later said he was deranged due to a tick bite. The fact is the Church was growing fast and doing good works and Satan just didn't like it. Well the preacher died but the replacement has done just as well as they now have built a Christian school and the Church has doubled in size. Oh, and there are several armed men in the crowd now.

Ironically, but rationally, the biggest collection of heavily armed civilians I know, the Pennsic War SCA ( historical re-creation group ) camping event, bans firearms, except for cannon.

It's for safety, since alcohol is consumed, and fire arms are not needed, and it makes the insurance company happy. Very few of us, even the most rabid 2nd Amendment advocates, like me, mind, at all.

To be clear, when I say civilians, I include hundreds, if not over a thousand, active duty military and law enforcement folk. But they are there in their civilian personas.

We have a LOT of Sheepdogs camping next to each other. Literally thousands of men & women who's dream is to rescue a damsel in distress. ( or damoiseau, we aren't picky ) Hard to imagine a safer place for a women to walk a dimly lit road.

And, For the 28 years I've done service work there, "security" is very specifically unarmed. Help from heavily armed people is a shout away, and it's it's assumed everyone is a trained martial artist, so "security" does assistance for the lost, the drunk, the tired, and to be a calm voice for upset people to vent to.

One memorable occasion had my 5' zip partner ( the wife of one of my best friends ) shut down a party that had run too late, and was seriously annoying nearby campers, just by parking our golf cart between the groups involved, and serving as a focus for the folk holding the party ( and were trying to figure out a polite way to wind it down ) to point to as the authorities to blame & as an excuse to encourage good behavior.

They still joke, years later, that we aren't allowed to run around intimidating parties to shut down. Mock serious lectures to us when newbies are being instructed, ( for their benefit ) made hilarious to the insiders, because my Partner, Lady Anne, is a tiny thing with a Death Glare that would intimidate Thanos.

Overheard to new volunteer, "Do not mess with her. She'll kick your ass. Then He'll kick your ass. Then I'll kick your ass. And you better be far away before her husband finds out, and he'll not find your remains to desecrate them, since she's a Society Youth Marshal who teaches Everybody's kids how to fight. Go bait a tiger. It's safer."

Which reminds me, her husband and I need to hit the range next week.

The story, true, from Pennsic 8 or so, ( don't recall the year ) is the FBI sent agents to check out the Anarchists, camping in PA.

It's Society for Creative Anarchism, there's a difference.

The agents presented their badges at Troll, ( toll/entry booth ) and demanded to be allowed in. Sure! We welcome LEOs. It's fun to watch them freak out. They were offered garb, ( costumes ) to blend in. No need, just looking around...three blocks later, the Men In Black at a Ren Fair effect kicked in. Hard to be more un-subtle. So they came back for camouflage, and spent the rest of the day "investigating" the "Anarchists". One joined, and is a Viscount out in California.

Naturally, the report leaked, and while there was some concern we were Monarchists, having Kings & Queens ( with no actual power, they give out awards & look pretty ) and there was a LOT of concern that we seemed to be the 3rd largest private army in the world, ( I've wondered who #1 & 2 are ) the final word was "Mostly Harmless".

A warning we carry with Pride.

I once asked a fellow who works for REDACTED if there was any concern about his membership in the Society. He told me so many Service folk are members that there is a Pentagon protocol in the event of War now to check the SCA Event schedule and contact the events to facilitate the call up.

When the warning order for Gulf War 1 went out, so many Service folk were at Pennsic that the local Air National Guard unit was tasked to pick them up and fly them to their units. Ever since they do flybys every year to greet their brothers & sisters. C-130s, Blackhawks, & Apaches.

We also are photographed, daily, to give photo interpreters practice doing counts on tent encampments. They call in daily and ask the head count at certain times of day, which we track for them and cheerfully provide the information, unlike a Taliban training camp.

After 48 years, the locals are used to us showing up in garb to go shopping, and since we pour several million dollars into the local businesses, we get a pretty good welcome.

The Beer & liquor stores have learned to stock up, but ironically Walmart has an idiot in upper management the last few years that won't believe the local managers when they order an extra bunch-a-ton of water, camping gear, food & beverages. Simply checking the records, or even just listening to the Store managers would tell them they lose out on hundreds of Thousand$ by letting all the stocks get depleted.

The local supermarket has this stately procession of ladies in elaborate gowns pushing shopping carts down the aisles and nodding politely to one another. The tourists are the ones gawking.

As I heard a liquor store clerk tell a tourist who asked if "they" made him nervous, "Would you worry about getting mugged at a Karate competition? Crime DROPS in this town for 2 week every year."

Remind me to tell you about going through customs.

Customs Canada, 1987.
Do you have any guns, knives bombs or other means of destruction?
Me: No, left all that stuff in Seattle. All I have is a hatchet.
Canada: Oh, OK. Welcome to Canada...

Then, as I left the parking lot, I got stopped.
Seems they passed a helmet law 4 days previous.
Got weird after that...

Questions for the Representative.

Let us say I just bought a $2000 target rifle. You now want me to sell it to you, against my will?

Will you give me $2000?

(I doubt it.)

So you want to take my property and pay me a fraction of it's value?

And you threaten to have armed men come to my door and murder me if I don't obey you?

And it's First Degree Murder since you gave the order in what is actually a criminal conspiracy of Grand Theft and Murder?

And your actions in every way are a violation of the Constitution and your oath to uphold it?

Just checking to see who is the greatest threat to the Citizens of our Republic.

Yes, I have a second question for the Representative...thank you, Mr. Chairman.

So, and this is an open question to any of our elected officials...am I to understand that you, and your security personnel, will be the first people in line when it comes time to surrender these "military style" firearms? Because I know you all believe in leading by example...I'm sorry, could you speak up, Mr. DeBlasio? You said that since you're a public servant, you deserve better protection than I do, or any other John or Jane Q. Public, who actually WORKS for a living? That you are "more exposed" to danger than a 'regular' citizen? Well, sir...how many elected officials have been killed in Walmart? Or church? Or nightclubs? Schools? The only elected officials who have been shot...were Republicans who were shot by one of YOUR party's supporters while they practiced for a charity baseball game.

So, with all due respect, sir (ed.note: read NONE, because no respect is due)... you. When you lead by example, I'll consider listening to you. But as elected officials in the United States of America, you do not tell citizens what to do.

WE tell YOU what to do.

You were elected to REPRESENT, not to rule.

Thank you, Mr. Chairman.

After listening to o-pork's, "we are going to take your gun" rant.

he is describing a hunting round, hell my practice rounds (.45 230g ball or 9mm ball) are weapons of war.

and after reading many many comments on line I believe that if some fool attempts this confiscation, a civil war will start.

They also want to ban "semi-automatic handguns" that "carry more than 10 rounds".

And "any semi automatic handgun" that weighs over a particular amount. As if THAT has anything to do with "deadly". Go ahead - ban the heavy shit. I carry light, and small, and I practice.

They're also talking about "any semi automatic gun with a threaded barrel; a barrel shroud; a forward grip; or any shotgun with a rotating drum".

So, they're going after cosmetics? "That firearm doesn't match your shoes...you have to surrender it..."

Sheesh.

The problem isn't fixing the GUNS.

The problem is fixing the PEOPLE.

Used to be, we had manners. Mutual respect. Common courtesy. All that is out the freakin' window now - it's OK to scream RACIST and NAZI at anyone you disagree with, without having any meaningful discussion or conversation whatsoever. Tantrums are OK. "Safe Zones" are everywhere, for folks who are "triggered" and "uncomfortable" - instead of dealing with problems, they're putting their head in the sand. Until either the next tantrum/pressure release...or, in a lot of cases now since nobody releases pressure incrementally...a mass shooting.

PEOPLE are the problem.
ATTITUDES are the problem.
SOCIETY (such as it is), is the problem. We need to cultivate respect for other human beings - regardless of color, creed, race, nationality, or opinion. "Identity"-anything needs to stop, and we need to focus on unity, not division. Similarities, not differences.

Oldog, at this point, I hope that people who were more middle of the road and less vocal, are starting to see that, they do, in fact, want to take the guns.

In fact, Mr.O'Rourke released a t-shirt advertising the fact. So the gun owner's aren't crazy and they are trying to take the guns. It's recorded and they are selling shirts pointing it out.

In fact, with San Francisco attempting to label the NRA and it's 5,000,000 law abiding citizens as terrorists has motivated me to join the NRA, and any other gun advocacy groups I can find.

It's been argued, somewhat successfully, that there are simply far too many illegal aliens in the US to ever deport. I'm sure hard numbers would be hard to come by on this, but I'm pretty sure that the number of illegal aliens in the US is a fraction of the number of guns owned in the US. Do they really believe they can effectively confiscate this many guns? Of course they don't. The costs, just in dollars would be prohibitive. The cost in lives would be tragic when people who have been law abiding citizens all their lives, decide it's time to resist tyranny. The result is obvious. What they hope for is that good people who have been law abiding all their lives, will continue that trend and follow what ever tyrannical laws they put forth. They depend on people being good sheep, willing to be lead to slaughter.

I guess my question at this time becomes, how can these wanna-be-tyrants be convinced that we will not comply. We will not be sheep, being herded by a malevolent shepherd. I suppose history tells us that they simply will not care. All the more reason to resist IMO. It seems that civil war is becoming more and more certain on the horizon. Personally, I want to be able to not only arm myself, but also those close to me who are willing and able.

I suddenly find myself more interested in finishing some 80% lowers. Turn in my AR? Sure, here's the bit with the serial number, now get off my lawn!

From the article above:
Since Congress established the background check system 25 years ago ,background
checks have blocked more than 3. 5 million gun sales to prohibited purchasers, including to convicted felons, domestic abusers, and people who have been involuntarily committed .
However, in the decades since, the law requiring background checks on gun sales has not been updated to reflect how people buy guns today.

Yeah - criminals buy them on streetcorners. No ID required, no background check needed, $200 cash and you're on your way.

The way I see it, that 2" glass protects ME, too, and gives me time to beat feet and call 911. If I can't shoot in...they can't shoot out.

Don't get me wrong - I don't advocate ANY confiscation/buyback/whatever. I used that to illustrate how S-T-U-P-I-D these people really are. People can always circumvent the law...by not following the law...especially when it isn't enforced...as it generally is with current regulations...and would be with whatever they want to throw at us in the future. It's all to a appease the very vocal minority...who sings virtuous from their soapbox, while trying to eliminate your rights.

80% are expensive and take a bit of effort to complete. I'm tempted to do one of the polymer jobs...but they tend to have a weak point at the buffer tube attachment and break at the takedown pin point if mishandled.

The last ban kicked off a big trend in CCW subcompacts that continues today.

The banning of arbitrary rifle features was really dumb...since when do politicians dictate what we can own firearms wise? That should never have been.
