On The Grand Tour, tv show, ( old top gear trio ) on one of their American stops, the host comments on British Speed Cameras, and jokes America doesn't have them, because we'd just shoot them.

I remember Jay Leno saying that on the old version of the show. He was the "Star in a reasonably priced car" part of the show. He had a four page list of all of Jay's cars. Great episode.

The Emperor of New York had his coronation speech, and promised legal pot. And! That he was going to tax it, but hopefully not enough to drive the black market. ( which will be illegal, but with pot legal, the consumer just has to not get caught actually buying from street dealers ) And! Promised a gazillion dollars for him to spend on those who pleased him.

What is going to happen, is Pot Uber. You get a ride to the grocery store & score a lid at the same time. ( it's been a century since high school, I don't remember what a lid is. : ) )

I wish I could patent that.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/01/new-anti-se mitism-woke-progressives-old-stereotypes/

The Left has coined the notion of the dog whistle as coded racist language that they define, simply, as anything their enemies say.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dog-whistle_politi cs

Thus, "I like my job" REALLY MEANS you are racist, because only Whites like to work.

Yeah, the racism built into that is so freaking obvious. Leftists really buy into the Klan stereotype of non-whites, that hard, that deep.

But, to be fair, I've applied a similar filter in my understanding of people. It's the Canary principle. Like canaries carried in cages into the coal mines, to warn of pockets of deadly gas, by falling over, the way groups and leaders treat Jews tells me when people are evil F$%&s that need to be considered threats to civilization.

Pogroms in Russia, Death camps in Germany, BDS in Boston, Mullahs in Iran, Democrats in Congress, the greens in Constantinople. ( ok, that last one isn't taught in grade school..... Neither are the rest, today )

Admittedly, normally a single metric judgement system is inherently flawed. But 6000 years or so of example, from Pharaohs to Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, prove to me it's a useful, and accurate one.

"First, they came for the Jews........"

Back to coffee cans. They used to have a plastic lid that resealed your coffee in. Put your pot in the coffee can. A "lid" from it held the amount of pot you would sell. This was in the days prior to everyone having portable scales to weigh a sandwich baggy of pot. BONUS: in the days before ziploc bags, they would roll the bag with pot in it and lick the flap to stick the bag shut.

First time I saw it sold on a lid the price was $5.00.

Thanks! I'd long forgotten the price structure. Back in High school some kid told me he was saving his cash for a "lid" and had to ask what system of measures it was. ; ) Didn't sound Metric, so I assumed it was some weird English thing like furlongs per fortnight or grains.

The "take a lap" course for gym at school followed the school grounds perimeter past the woods behind the school. 1/4 mile iirc. There was a dip that put you out of sight by the woods, and kids would stop and smoke or just rest a few minutes, while some would keep an eye out for the coach to come roust them. Most of us would just keep running, punch through the cloud of smoke, and keep the illusion of exercise going. # of laps depended on Coaches mood.

Coach "tuffy buns" Bayer. Break an arm, and "toughy buns! Take a lap!" . He wasn't really that bad but he reveled in the reputation.

I'll ask my next Uber driver.

I will be visiting the new retail outlets, if only to find Christmas presents. ; ) ( in California they rivaled Amazon for Christmas sales )

A buddy in college worked at a local amusement park. A head shop was across the street. Every payday he bought another bong. Every different version of one brand name, all colorful wood & plastic.

Decades later, he had them all on display, spotless, on High shelves in his den. He's a Physicist, and calls it his relativity display. He had calculated in the intervening years what motorcycle or car he could have bought instead. Once he told me that if he'd bought CDs that shelf was a BMW M5.

He got the idea from a investment radio show that told him that buying a Mercedes at age 45 was equal to a million dollars at retirement if invested in the Market.

He still has his Honda 360.

( Great timing on this editorial )

A preview of how lot legalization will work in New York doesn't need looking at crime rates in Colorado or California. Local reality is adequate.

Tobacco is highly taxed and regulated. In the big cities truck loads of illegal cigarettes are brought in and sold through the Mafia ( an imaginary group of civic supporters ) but in rural NY, people smuggle their addictive drugs from PA or from the islands of Native American foreign countries. Next to the casino, there is a strip of tobacco shops. On Reservations without?

I went deer hunting last year, not to shoot, but as physical therapy from knee surgery. Oh, I'd have taken a shot, but I was really there so a buddy's son could have a shot on my doe tag. ( hunting is better regulated than heroin in NY ) We had invitations to hunt on land next to the Reservation, and while there was no Casino, there was a halo of tobacco shops, miles deep, along the border with a major highway. A constant stream of customers buying a half dozen or more cartons, often, ( I asked ) for family and friends in loose, unofficial confederations of otherwise law abiding Americans of middle income. Heartening to a Libertarian, the number of scofflaws going miles to defeat a law.

The kid got his doe. The chili was delicious.

In the mid 70s Texas, a lid was an ounce.
Interesting coffee can reference but that looks like a LOT more than an Oz.
Never understood why they were "lids".

Once had a bong hit of Acapulco Gold at a lab TA's place.
Got so disoriented I hugged the porcelain god.

Remind me to tell you about Mombasa, Kenya.
Or Singapore.

I remember nickel and dime bags and a lid. They were five, ten and fifteen bucks accordingly.
I wasn't much into it but being in the machine shop we made some pretty cool dope pipes! Bowls with cooling fins, chambers and supercharger holes. It was nice having a little extra lunch money!

I think Tootal has the prices right, ( from my High School days) the actual origin of the word is probably the coffee can reference.

It's like "420" a counter culture reference with multiple origin stories. The LA school system schedule seems to be the consensus origin, but I don't know .

Bongs:
I used to collect glass ones from a local glass shop. Rarely used, but always clean and displayed. Had the parents over to celebrate my first apartment (I was happier than they were), and had no place to put my glass bongs, so I added water and stuck flowers in them. Mom never noticed. Dad wanted to know how well each one worked.

My first bong hit was with AG. Fell straight back into the couch (later visiting ralph) and all I remember is that I had a Basketball Jones (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlhWPVJNAOo)

Those prices are right as I remember too. Never heard the "lid" reference to a coffee can...

Made a bong in ceramics class in "high" school. Teacher gave me an A+ and then smashed it. Never even got to use it.

Remember the 6-shooter?
How about the slide bowl?

I also remember seeing my older sister stoned out of her mind at a Rocky Mountain Bong-a-Thon in the 70's. We snuck in on inner-tubes down the creek.

When I was growing up we had 1,2,3,4 and 5 finger bags. 2 fingers was a dimebag if I remember right (not that weed has messed with my uhm ah what were we talking about?)

I have a strict policy never to call for the violent overthrow of the United States government, or admit to recreational drug use. Wouldn't be prudent.

Remember Randy's instaroaches? Papers with a wire so you could hold them to the last drop. Very popular for amusement park rides. On the water flume ride at the local park, the boats slowly bumped through tunnels until getting to the lift chain, then whoosh! Splash! End of ride. The park had an employee at the peak, with a brake, for safety, so boats wouldn't collide, and passengers were properly seated. The "custom" was to pass him the roach as you went by, so you'd have no evidence on you at the stop.

Of course, I never......

https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2019/01/t he_culture_of_trust_and_how_society_collapses_with out_it.html

In Norte American culture, friendship is based on trust. That's unique on the planet.

In most societies, trust is based on friendship. That's not at all the same. You are my friend, therefore I trust you to support me, to get my children into the good schools, to arrange for jobs, marriage, coups.

In the craptastic third world, especially Arab & other Clan structure cultures, like Africa & the 'Stans, family is trust. Your Uncle can borrow the lawn mower, and you expect it back. Your neighbor? He'll use it then loan it to his cousin, & it doesn't come back.

In Argentina, you get your mower back from classmates in your circle of friends. You wouldn't trust just a neighbor.

In Canada, & the U.S., You expect your neighbour to return your mower intact. The first time! It's our culture. If he doesn't, he's not your friend, and your friends know not to trust him. And it matters, here.

We don't expect to be able to bribe a cop out of a speeding ticket. In much of the world people expect to bribe the cop not to get a ticket.

Leftists lie. They don't trust outside their Clan. That's why for 2 centuries, the 2nd Amendment was the bedrock of trust. We trust our neighbors to not use government force to rule, they trust us with the ability to use force to protect us all.

If the government doesn't trust it's Citizens with guns, there's no reason to trust the government. And there has never been a reason to trust Leftists. All they have is lies, promises that are lies, and hate to hide the lies.

Nobody gets beat up at the NRA convention. Berkley, "the once bastion of free speech" campus is a viper nest. Wear the wrong hat........

Credit to Ringo to for the rant. Partly from book 3 of Troy Rising.

I enjoyed The Last Centurion. The politics is overt in that one. Darn good read though, don't you think?

David Drake often based his novels on historic battles, and The Forlorn Hope is his take on the Anabasis. Another Darn good read.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anabasis_(Xenophon)

For the lazy, The Anabasis is the story of a group of Greek mercenaries that hired out to one Persian claimant to be Emperor. Did a good job until a flanking maneuver by their boss's brother took out their boss, ending the struggle, leaving the Greeks surrounded by the now combined armies of their enemies.... And no one liked the Greek mercs. So they literally held an election, on the spot,& voted to fight their way clear, & go Home.

And did. It was a running battle all the way from central Persia to Greece, stealing and trading for food, and kicking butt all the way home, stopping each night to argue about what to do next. ( most of the original is arguments & politics, yes, I've read it. ) Across extremely hostile territory with every man's hand against them, including the armies they'd fought with & against.

it's a mostly true story. Like all ancient Greek history it's part propaganda, part brag, and part hard facts. Like Thermopylae, & the 300, folk have deconstructed it for thousands of years.

Yes it happened, not quite like they said, and much nastier than they taught you in grade school or on kiddie history cartoons.

You know, like most history.

The guns used in The Forlorn Hope were a logical extension of the Boys anti tank rifle, a Brit .55 cal bolt action. Some big anti tank guns used squeeze bore barrels in WW2. Put the two together, with realistic "future tech" and viola!

The diamond barrels could be made today in an orbiting module. It's a microgravity sputtering 3d printer technology. The only reason it's not already being done is probably massive lobbying by De Beers. ( you can grow golf ball size gems in orbit. Flawless diamonds. Engine blocks of solid diamond. You can see how that is scary to people that count on engagement ring propaganda to stay filthy rich. )

Drake was a translator in the only independent tank unit in Vietnam, so his combat chops are unquestioned.

Hilariously, he got annoyed that another writer was getting rich on a really badly written fantasy series, so he began his Lord Of The Isles series, and deliberately used the exact same plot in every book. Based the overarching story on iirc, Phoenician history, used battles straight out of those wars, and waited for the Bad reviews!

Made a fortune off the sales it was hugely popular! Don't get him drunk at a Con, he gets morose about how stupid it all is. ; )

History trivia note. I think it was the Makin island raid, where a Marine with a Boys, shot down a Japanese flying boat.... Middle of the battle, this big Kawanashi starts up, begins to taxi, and was either going to report the raid or bomb the Marine Raiders, and over the din of mortar fire & small arms you could hear this Bang! Bang! Bang! of this shoulder fired cannon. The flying boat began it's take off run. Bang! Bang! Bang! Lifted off the water, then crashed in flames. Gotta be a unique kill.

Lying is a skill. Some are well practiced at it from a life long repetition of that skill. Personally, I'm not positively impressed either by those who show a great proficiency at that skill, or by those who praise it in others. Just sayin'.

Claiming Trump's economic success is due to BO's policies is only true to the extent that much of the success has come by reversing BO's policies. Something that the left claimed would lead to recession, until it didn't. Claiming otherwise is lying, and as I said above, I'm not impressed.
