RED

Also good to know 2 out of the 3 major donations that I give are on the good list, the other is Shriner's Hospital. My father was a Shriner and drove burn victims from St. Louis to Cincinnati and back in a day. They are much more than funny hats and go carts.

I hate it when Goodwill gets lumped in with the bad charities. See Goodwill takes donated stuff and provides jobs to people who are otherwise unemployable. They work at the stores. That is the charity, providing the jobs that give those folks hugely needed meaning and accomplishment in their lives.

It's a great charity for donating your unwanted but still good stuff to.

I'd skip the memes and go directly to charitynavigator.com for info.

I've known those figures for Goodwill for a long time. I still give to them for the employment they offer. They employ some that could not function well enough in a competitive environment. How do you put a price on that?

Sifo,

That charity meme appears to be fake news.

See https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=sea rch.summary&orgid=6188

Goodwill Industries is solidly rated.

We live in amazing times.

I continue to be amazed at how many folks make decisions and based their life's plan on cartoons from the internet.

Goodwill hasn't survived all these years by carrying out a scam.

A friend of mine's girlfriend worked at Goodwill and ended up a manager. Now she's the manager of a Gas station/Qwikmart. Obviously they do a good job of training folks and some of them better themselves.

Look how many people get their news from The Daily Show or Bill Maher... or The View.

Well, I've said before, a meme should be something that makes you think about something and question what you know. I'm not sure that what was in that meme should be called fake news or not. Their source seems to be snopes, not the link Blake provided. Opinions can differ. I would probably be more inclined to pay attention to what Blake provided over snopes.

Goodwill certainly has a different model than most charities. I think that's how they got rated at the bottom. They aren't my favorite charity, but they do get contributions from our household pretty much every year. Good to hear some of the feedback from others on their experience with Goodwill.

I will say that I've seen some of what the Salvation Army does. They do excellent work IMO. I think they deserve to be among the top charities. I'm a bit surprised seeing the Red Cross down at the bottom, but they certainly have some issues I object to. The others at the bottom, I don't care for.

Thanks for the feed back on this. I learned a few things about Goodwill. In our area Goodwill also provides temporary housing for families that for various reasons are between permanent housing. Our school buses pickup/drop off there. It actually looks pretty decent.

Good discussion!

There's your first problem.

I ascribe the accuracy of that to something akin to "a kid down the street said something that sounded like".

In our collective quest to get as much as possible with as little investment of time and intellect we've fallen victim to a plethora of mental shortcuts. There range from "Googling" to cartoons.

I wrote an essay a couple years ago entitled "The New Stupid" after seeing how students did research and how poorly they understood and retained information.

I consider myself fortunate to have been raised in that era of the paper dictionary and encyclopedias. I can't recall the number of times I went to an encyclopedia to read about something and spent 3 hours on other topics I accidentally wandered upon.

When I looked up a word in the dictionary I . . . pretty much automatically . . .got to learn the 3 ahead and the 3 behind.

Now . . . I ask a question . . . the race begins to see who can answer first and I can repeat the question 5 minutes hence and not a soul has any recollection. Diminished breadth and depth of knowledge.

I find myself entertained by the need to respond fast rather than accurately. I recently had a problem on a major construction site. Someone sent an e-mail with information about the incident. Before I could get the truck pulled over to read the e-mail closely, 9 people had responded with largely incoherent babbling . . . basically saying no more than "I'm involved in this process". I'd take smart, considered accurate information . . . particularly on a $5B project . . . over fast and stupid any day.

But hey . . . in my sunset years . . . trolling for a chance to retire for the 3rd time . . . I've likely become surly.

Interesting thing is that companies (PG&E was here from CA seeking help with their fires last week) are willing to pay a handsome premium for "old farts" who have actual hands on knowledge.

To the instant question . . . I find Snopes entertaining . . like the bread dancers on the steps of the museums on Fifth Avenue. Some of their information may be accurate but they, all too often, reveal their bias and propensity to inject political leanings into their responses.

We . . . absolutely . . . .live in interesting times.

Goodwill helps out people that need it. They don't always charge for their goods. I've seen them bring in people for necessities at times they know the crowd is down.

I Timothy 5:18 For the scripture saith, thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

I do not have a problem with the person in charge of a charity being paid well, if that person does good work. The criticism that seams to get the most listening to is about what the top guy earns. As noble as working for nothing appears, that is not the mindset I want in a leader. The pay should be rendered and then the guy can put it back in if he wants to.

I worked as a consultant for about a year and a half at the Rotary International headquarters. Unfortunately, many of the top executives treat charities as a revolving door towards the "real" corporations where there's real money to be made. They can't afford to pay salaries like big publicly traded companies, so attracting good executives is difficult. To many will take the first big paycheck that they can with the experience they have accumulated. Or they get stuck with the corporate rejects. I'm not sure how they can strike the "right" balance.

Did you catch the fake brady ads that the 4channers were posting to facebook?
Pretty hilarious since clowns would then repost them all over.
I won't post any here since they are in terrible taste and also very easy to find.
