Not military? As an insult, all the other Empires would agree.

The model was the Coast Guard & peace time Navy. Run life saving supplies to disasters, crisis aid, exploration & oceanographic research.

But some Admirals want a more active, Praetorian Guard, King Maker role. See Next Generation and reboot movies.

I'm sure there's better Trekkers here than me. : )

The lore is that it was an exploration/discovery/diplomatic agency. Weapons were for self defense, and not considered all that important. The rescue force doesn’t sound right, given their directive not to interfere.

Though I’ll allow that later incarnations of star trek wandered from the founding principles. Sounds familiar, actually.

Prime Directive was to not interfere with the natural formation of solitary life forms and cultures. Those who had the ability and activity of traveling off-world and meeting other life forms were exempt, and invited to join the Council. "Starfleet" was simply the exploratory wing - yes, supposed to be non-invasive and non-confrontational, but armed with some pretty darned advanced self-defense toys.

Even the continuation movies now are only embattled in response to another species' actions. Technically...still self-defense.

And of course, the greenies love it because there's no money and everything is free and utopian.

Except when they have to blow stuff up - worlds, sometimes - in order to survive.

I'll fall under the designation "exploratory" if I get to fly a space ship at warp speed, shoot phasers at aliens and sometimes evil humans, plus the perks of a tricorder, a lapel communicator, and teleportation.
I wonder if the Klingons are recruiting; I like their cool blade weapon thing.

But not on the many planets of The Empire.

Star Wars tech is schitso. The fans spend a lot of time rationalizing the weirdness.

For example, self aware AI, But targeting systems are horrible. Thus everyone uses jammers to make everyone miss. Which must include belt mounted units that are never mentioned.

Armor that doesn't stop the common blaster. Except the one character.

Etc.

Every technology uses different rare crystals to work. ( that part makes some sense ) Planets with rare power crystals are all slave states run by interstellar corporations or evil Empires. ( that's pretty typical here, too ) : )

All the ships and fighters are aerodynamic and structural nightmares. Air containing force fields are common, but not used everywhere, depending on plot.

Actually that's pretty normal. Real sci fi spends a lot of effort on adjusting the technology for plot purposes.

Warp/Hyper drive limitations, for example. If you can hop right into a planet's orbitals, war is a series of unstoppable raids. So usually there are rationalized limits, often the depth of a gravity well, to allow space combat.

Lucas is not a science fiction writer, and his fairy tales just have ships and blasters instead of horses and swords. He never bothered to explain the magic to himself, or uses limitations to drive plots. Fans retro fit explanations after the movies are made.

That means that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is better literature than Star Wars, in that Often prophesy is invoked, ( like The Chosen One ) but always, prophesy, like wishes, are subject to the wording counts and loopholes drive the plot.

Anakin was thought to be prophesied! Bring balance to the force! So, he's part of the movement to kill the good Force folk and promote the bad folk..... Balance!

Short form, be careful what you wish for.

But no one mentions the irony of the misinterpreted prophesy in Star Wars, it's just plain bad writing. Lazy and a bit insulting to the fans.

Contrast Lord of The Rings, where the ring Wraith can't be killed by man. Runs into the only hobbit & lady warriors on the battlefield. Loophole! Sucker!

Buffy had a monster that could not be killed by "any weapon forged by man". So they hit it with an anti tank missile with a self forging warhead, fired by a Girl. Loophole! Sucker! ( same loophole, actually )

What I find funny is that same Gizmodo article, posted on an aircraft design forum, got complaints that the software used is poorly written and understated the drag coefficient by a lot. Then the argument continued on how bad the designs really were in technical terms.

Funniest is some of these folk work for Boeing or Grumman, and may actually have put a Tie fighter model in a real wind tunnel.

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2018/06/20/the-thirty- year-war/

Referenced in above article.

How did I become a holocaust climate denier?

Certainly not because I'm anti science.

Nor, sorry to say, because I'm immune to hysteria in disaster prediction. One of my treasured possessions is the original article "Giant Meteor Impact" which may be the first & best layman's description of same. I bought into the 1977 Ice Age warning. Still remember the actual science & haven't seen it refuted, 41 years later.

No... What turned me on to skepticism was yelling at the radio when Rush Limbaugh was being completely wrong on the science out of ignorance, while being on the right side of truth, by accident or ideology... And being wrong on the ideology.

What part of "getting the science wrong", "triggered" me?

Statements that a warmer climate created more severe weather, while the exact opposite is true by historical record, going back as far as man has known writing, and beyond, by archaeological evidence. (See Pueblo cliff dwellers & Petra )

And, statements that 1998 was the warmest year on record, while it wasn't even for that century. ( I can read. The records were published..... Before the Dog ate their Homework and databases were purged.) And, lying artwork, like the hockey stick graph, and all those charts that faked away the Medieval warm period and Roman heat records.....

They started obviously lying to me back 30 years ago, and have doubled down, past the point where they actually call for people who aren't part of their con to be jailed, murdered, and sent to reeducation camps.

Funny, no real scientist has called for me to be eviscerated for questioning aether theory vs. Quantum foam. Not one.

So, am I a godlike paragon of Truth? No. Imagine someone telling you Gold Wings are dangerous because they don't weigh enough to stick to the road. How about? Never use your front brake because it'll make your bike skid out of control. Or? Motorcycles turn by the pressure of the big toe on the pedals????

I'll bet you don't think folk who say such things are honest experts. And if they want to take front brakes away, and tax you on one's you own? Then say you should be jailed because you disagree?

Thank you.

Re: BBC report on Jan fired by computer.

Once upon a time, I worked for a big corporation, and was sent to fix a problem in a different building on an assembly line. I was supposed to be issued a new security badge to access the new building, but came the day to work there, no badge. So I just walked in with everyone else and got to work. About a week later, problem solved, so back to my normal routine.

Weeks later, HR had a spazm, since I'd clocked in & out at the new building and there was no record of me being there, otherwise. Called up to HR. Yelling, accusations of fraud! I explained the security badge deal. More yelling. I showed them copy of suggestion form detailing security breach and offering fix.

Yep, I had already informed on myself, and paper trail went from New building's management stream. But....but... No PROOF I'd worked in New building. I had two questions. Did assembly line work before that week? No, and company was in panic mode to get it running. Did it work after that week? Uh.... Yes, multi million dollar project in full production.

Further details trickled in as management got calls, turns out the contracter that built the line insisted on jillion buck rebuild & denied problem existed. ( at the same time ) I had stopped by on lunch to see a buddy who was a mechanic on the new line, and showed me it crashing, and I suggested a solution. He told his boss, that called mine, and they borrowed me for a week. No one told HR. Everyone assumed I had a badge. So I spent a week with inside micrometers, crawling through a basketball court sized machine, with my mechanic buddy, with his hammer, and measured & whacked our way end to end, and fixed it.

Then we had to explain how we fixed the company's biggest new project with a hammer.

For twenty plus years I argued that if you really believe in Global Warming, then you cannot allow three billion Chinese to drive SUVs.

But the only way to prevent that is war. Perhaps, I suggested, the Nuclear Winter would cancel out the Global Warming?

I've pi$$,ed a Lot of people off with that argument.

I remember when they revoked the law that required ignition interlock with seat belts.

Seat belt not buckled? Car wouldn't start.

Girl died because she couldn't run away from a murderer.

I normally despise the dead teenager films, but enjoy most parodies. They act like cretins.

I once worked as a bar back, and had a gallon bottle of Sewers white label explode on me. Naturally, driving home in the drunk time, I got pulled over. Reeking. One laughing explanation and a clowning sobriety test later, the nice deputy admitted I was sober, I had consented to a breathalyzer, but I was outgassing so much alcohol fumes the deputy was afraid it wouldn't work.

If I'd had an alcohol interlock I would have had to walk home.

Upstate NY hotel bar. There were no sober people around except the desk clerks, who don't have time for employee problems, and bar tenders getting off shift as the bar closes, and immediately racing to hit the Thruway, to head for Buffalo to get a drink.

In a quick of local laws, Rochester & surrounding towns close bars at 2 am. Buffalo, at 3 am. So as the last drinks are served, the hotel bar tenders jam down the road, sober, mind you, to Buffalo to get a drink. Then, often, cross into Niagara Falls Canada to catch "The Canadian Ballet", the string of mostly excellent strip clubs. ( many on one street, quite handy ) IIRC alcohol is served until 2 am. In Ontario, so an hour or so at The Ballet serves to sober them up for the leisurely drive home.

As bar back, I had to stay until closing & beyond, to first, request customers head back to their rooms ( a big moral advantage of hotel bars is fewer DWIs ) then clean up.

I didn't care enough about social drinking to make the Buffalo Run, ( once, for curiosity's sake ) but have been designated driver on a few such runs.

The hot blonde doing a pole dance, while playing a saxophone, both expertly & most lovely, stands out as a treasured memory.

Also, being the DD means the girls enjoy chatting with the sober guy, me, and while I tip generously, well deserved pay for performance, I never hit on them, thus I get free lap dances where we chat about classes & how much the kids are hellions, ( many strippers are single moms working through college..... Never met a stupid studies student, all going for MBAs or pre-med, a few law students ) and often, see pics of the kids.

Good times.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/australian-supermarkets -prevent-bag-rage-plastics-ban-takes-103953702--fi nance.html

The sudden plastic bag hysteria, based on the huge amount of plastic swirling in the Pacific, mostly from super poor "third world" countries and China, is a mob mentality phenomenon worth watching .

I doubt Australians throw their grocery bags in the ocean. Ditto Portland dwellers. Neither Aussies or Americans tend to pile garbage next to their towns for cloud bursts to wash them into the sea. ( check out the videos on rivers of plastic. The Guatemala one is impressive )

But we, rich, successful countries, are always first to clean up our messes, since impoverished people don't have incentive or resources to do so.

My prediction is an increase in food poisoning and disease in Australia, since reusable grocery bags need to be regularly washed to avoid hauling the kale & tofu home in a bacterial trap nastier than my septic tank.

I'm all for conservation. I use garbage cans throughout the house that use plastic grocery bags. Excess bags get recycled, properly. So while I oppose dictatorial greenie policy, I do urge people to be mindful of the environment.

And wash your reusable grocery bags. Often, at least weekly. Better, right after shopping. Use bleach.

Let the greenies earn their Darwin awards.

Because self-driving cars just weren't dangerous enough.

Strap your kids to a self-driving bicycle and tell it to drop them off at daycare.

What could possibly go wrong?
