Something to think about.

https://alankandel.scienceblog.com/2018/04/17/eart h-day-2018-air-airways-lungs-etc-no-places-for-pol lution/

It would be interesting to compare the most liberal voting areas in the country to the most polluted areas in the country.
Would it not?

on the one hand, geographic differences like the LA basin, that traps smog, has to be considered.

on the other, just look at the most socialist countries, and you see a real trend. China's pollution is obvious from space, as is Russia's. ( they killed a Sea! ) You can measure Chinese pollution in New York.

I'm all for reducing air pollution. Cheap energy and wealth. That's the secret.

You need cheap energy to be wealthy, and cheap energy to make the air clean. Cheap enough and you don't need the rivers to drink, ( California rivers are consumed, not conserved ) you desalinate sea water, and make it pure.

We've made mistakes, sure. But it's been a while since the Ohio river was on fire.

http://freebeacon.com/politics/chuck-schumer-wants -legalize/

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/04/berni e_sanders_is_out_to_punish_states_that_refuse_pot_ legalization.html

Two different and self serving takes on pot legalization.

Both are meant to serve those who bribed the respective politicians.

Chuck wants to create more government agencies and spend more money. It's his bag, baby.

Bernie wants to be Stalin and punish those who oppose him. ( natural for a communist hippie who honeymooned in Moscow )

Imho, the solution is for a Republican to put forward and pass a no frills and spending free Bill that simply de- criminalizes pot. Take it off the list, and declare federal laws restricting it null & void. Nothing else. No new spending, no new bureaucracy, no mandates.

Maybe a request for a mass pardon of all possession cases, with a cya clause to deny lawsuits.

Republicans have wanted to get off the backs of the people on this subject for years, but the Democrats and prison lobby have fought it.

This is a simple Bill to write and pass, costing nothing.

Might as well want common sense. Good freaking luck.

https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/04/the_s 400_strikes_out.html

Use a lot of salt when reading.

In the 1973 Arab Israeli war two cases of technological surprise happened, neither good for Israel and the west.

1. The Soviet made & ,supplied anti tank missiles proved more effective than anyone expected. Wire guided missiles wreaked havoc on Israeli tanks until the Israelis adopted a new tactic. Having the tank commander stand up out of the turret, and engage incoming missile CREWS by shooting his old school .50 M2 Browning machine gun at where the missile was coming from. No word on how many crews were actually killed, but when they ducked, they lost control of the missile, and missed. ( bullets were much faster than the missiles ) Some tanks had wires from seven or more misses laying across them after battle.

2. Using information from Prisoners of War taken by the Soviets from North Vietnam, held, tortured, then murdered. ( while lying about it for decades ) The then new Soviet made & supplied anti aircraft missile radar used frequencies not covered by existing radar warning receivers. Several Israeli planes were shot down by the New systems. Presumably by a few weeks after the War, New radar warning gear was issued by the U.S. to NATO and our allies. But obviously too late to save several pilots in Israel.

So it's entirely possible that Vladimir deliberately did not use the S-400 arena system during the recent strike, to preserve it's secret frequency and capability. ( or to save face if it failed ) Either explanation works better than guessing it was a failure. Assuming it is impotent is a stupid thing to do.

Russian leadership is known to lie, as a matter of daily survival, and a legacy and religious requirement of Marxist-Leninist doctrine. They certainly lie about how good their weapons are.

That's true in both the bragging sense and the hiding true capability sense.

That last one poses a question for me - anyone have personal experience with solar? I'm considering it...Maryland, decent sun levels, full-sun on rooftop where I'm considering the install. Has anyone here done it? How are the upfront costs versus the return? Residential appliation here...

Joe I was going to put you in touch with a guy that lives in Falls Church that just installed a PV array (originally from Westminster MD), but I have a decent opinion about you, and he's a bit of a d***. However, that being said, it apparently hinges on the tax credit incentives available, and whether or not the panels are owned by you or a leasing company. This guy's electric bills for the last two months have been $7.70! He has reverse metering as well for generation credit.

I need to do more digging for my locale then, as far as the credits go. They can't be too bad, as there are quite a few homes in the area growing panels on the roof these days. Just have to buckle down and start the research.

House is 31 years old now; so's the roof. Probably time to get new shingles before too long, and that's the time to put panels on since my understanding is, they won't install on older roofing (or, apparently, on tin roof). But since I'm not finding shingles in my yard after windy days...I guess I still have a little bit of time : )

Another friend of mine up in Allentown has a set of Tesla panels on his roof (to help charge his Tesla!), but hasn't had them long enough to build a history. If you'd like, we could ride up there and visit...

I live in sunny Central CA and had several solar companies give me bids a few years ago. My relatively low energy consumption and bad roof configuration equaled about a $50 net monthly savings on a leased system. Not nearly enough because you know they are fudging a bit with the saving amount to try to make a sale. I would have to save alot more to make me feel comfortable with a 20-year commitment.

Some day, shingles will go the way of the incandescent light bulb. You'll have to buy a special permit to install plain old asphalt shingles.
Solar-powered, negative-footprint shingles will be just about the only thing available on the shelf at your local Lowes or Home Depot. They'll all be shipped from China, cost 5 times as much, take 5 times longer to install, and make a $5 dollar difference on your electric bill.

And then we'll find out they cause cancer, they'll be outlawed, and it will cost 5 times as much to remove and 10 times as much to dispose of.

Up in our area, we have a "test" windmill that was installed decades ago by out power company. They recently added a fairly large array of solar cells on that site for another test. The spent, pretty much the entire winter covered in snow. At least in the summer we do have very long days this far north. I can't see where it reduces costs to the infrastructure here. Obviously this has little to do with installing them on your roof, but I just found it interesting to see this winter.

My aunt and uncle in Buena Park, CA are selling electricity to Southern California Edison. They put panels on their house, and a huge bank of batteries.

It's a $40,000 system. Bought and paid for.

It powers their whole house, and they sell the excess power to SCE, netting about $100 a month back in their pockets.

They're 74 and 75 years old. The system has been in operation for about 5 years.

OK, so they've gotten paid about $6,000, and maybe they live another 15 years. They'll net $24,000. The amount they are saving on the power bill is about $300 a month, so that's $72,000 in savings plus the $24,000 they got paid, so that's $96,000 in 20 years from a system that cost $40,000.

Very cool, that's the kind of return I'd love to get!

My place is extremely traditional - stone wall farmhouse, very nice road frontage...but you can't see the garage from the road. Plan is, when I need a roof, to put tin on the house because I think it'll look awesome with the stone. Garage is where I want to put the panels - good sun, has faces that don't face the road at all, and lots of square footage.
