http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/brexit-cl imate-change-al-gore-says-global-warming-syria-war -helped-leave-vote-a7645866.html

For once I almost agree with part of an Al Gore lie to get more money fest.

Climate change is real. It's Really Really real on short time frames. ( It's then called "weather" )

Never mind that the computer models used to justify taking your money don't work. They simply have not modeled last year, so they cannot model next year. 100 years from now is fantasy, not even science fiction.

By the way, there are a LOT of people happy to come up with a computer model to justify taking your money. Makes no different to them that the model is unrelated to reality, it's the justification than matters. Doom is always a good way to con people.

So What Did the Prophet Gore say I almost agree on?

Weather, droughts especially, are a major cause of societal collapse, especially in pre-industrial civilizations. ( Syria qualifies. They have supersonic jets and advanced missiles, but they don't make them, they buy them from the folks renting their harbor. )

Syria is located in the part of the world where mankind has hammered the soil to sand by farming it with primitive and bad practices since before writing. It's probably where that half of the planet figured out you can plant a seed and grow a crop. Every time a plow bites the soil, a little bit of good soil dries up and blows away. ( so it's darn barren outside the flood plains )

Also Syria is where war is oldest on earth. ( defined as city states with walls and armies ) Every war wrecks the economy, ruins the canals and waterworks, and trashes the land. In one famous war, the entire water system was deliberately destroyed and every farmer in the region ( from the Med to the Indian Ocean in what is now Iran ) put to the sword to starve out the walled city states.

Piles of skulls were placed at the gates of the cities to hammer home how Bada$$ the conquerors were. Real Game Of Thrones stuff. ( where do you think Martin gets his stuff? )

In Syria, a drought, ( normal cyclic ) plus a seriously oppressive regime ( see Vanity Fair article praising the lovely wife and progressive President ) hurt the farming.

Revolution almost always happens when weather and/or war has stressed the economy.

Of course, Al Gore also says Climate Change causes cooties, affects the asteroid belt, and is the reason True Blood was canceled. So pretty much the rest of his schtick is utter nonsense.

I'd rather the con of my time had been asteroid defense instead of global warming. Building space travel infrastructure would be a good thing.

Not as much chance to rip people off, probably. Global warming is Social Justice deal now where evil rich guys can steal money extorted for "the oppressed".

( tax the middle class and poor both with high energy costs and "to compensate the third world for western civilization sins". You think money collected for such a worthy cause wouldn't be skimmed by the UN?..... I mean I'm sure reasonable distribution and accounting costs will apply. ; )

http://jalopnik.com/this-is-what-happens-when-robo t-cars-and-human-driven-c-1793674239

The end result of self driving cars is inevitably to ban humans driving. Period.

Robots will Obey their orders. Or they are broken.

I admit to some amusement that the reported crash is the typical motorcycle/car accident. A person turning left in front of you.

In the end the Robot Overlords will demand humans be removed from the road for their convenience and safety.

This parallels the situation in aviation where everyone is mandated to upgrade the very expensive electronics in all airplanes with totally new collision avoidance transponders and systems.

The airlines rule. So your Piper Cub has to have the same gear as a 767 to fly in the Corporate Airspace.

Ironically if you have a Cessna the new gear is extra expensive since it requires an extra layer of paperwork. While the guy who built his plane in his garage can use the non-certified version for thousands less.

If it fits. The guy with the Sopwith Camel replica literally can't haul the weight of the new gear.

Will your bike be able to haul the soon to be mandated but not invented yet gear to communicate it's position and speed to Uber cars? ( and any passing police )

from Ducbsa's link above.

Notably, Dr. Patrick Moore, one of the co-founders of Greenpeace, wrote a month earlier to explain why why he had resigned from Greenpeace:

"The organization I co-founded has become a monster. When I was a member of its central committee in the early days, we campaigned – usually with success – on genuine environmental issues such as atmospheric nuclear tests, whaling and seal-clubbing.

When Greenpeace turned anti-science by campaigning against chlorine (imagine the sheer stupidity of campaigning against one of the elements in the periodic table), I decided that it had lost its purpose and that, having achieved its original objectives, had turned to extremism to try to justify its continued existence.

Now Greenpeace has knowingly made itself the sworn enemy of all life on Earth. By opposing capitalism, it stands against the one system of economics that has been most successful in regulating and restoring the environment."

I gave up my membership in the Sierra Club when the mission changed from "we must preserve the wilderness so people can experience it" to "only the elite may view nature, the redneck scum regular so-called citizens must be restricted to inner city plantations".

I admit that's not how they put it in the newsletters.

The troubles brewing within the March for Science surfaced in January, marked by a now-deleted official tweet: “Colonization, racism, immigration, native rights, sexism, ableism, queer-, trans-, intersex-phobia, & econ justice are scientific issues.” Since then, the addled march has torn through four different diversity statements, shellacked by critics on both sides. (Harvard’s Steven Pinker bashed the march’s “anti-science PC/identity politics/hard-left rhetoric,” while others complained the statement didn’t go far enough.) The march’s latest set of “Diversity and Inclusion Principles,” when paired with its more shame-faced and apologetic sibling, the “Statement on Diversity and Inclusion,” tops out at over 1,000 words.

What the above has to do with string theory or orbital dynamics, I have no idea.

By the way, if 97% of scientists believe something, you know what that means?

It means that 97% of a group of people believe something. Nothing else at all.

I'd like to point out that disputes in Science are not new.

The long argument between the "gradualists" and "catastrophists" in geology & biology have swung back and forth over the years, for example. ( stuff happens gradually over long periods of time...vs. things muddle along pretty much unchanged then "bam!" a disaster like a volcano or asteroid kicks change hard & fast ) (I'm a catastrophist )

Evolution, and the basic principals, has been hotly argued even ignoring the religious arguments based on no science at all. "It just happened" and "then a miracle occurred" have the same value... zip.

And there are the famous arguments that have "Science" as a group, trying to shut up the "cranks" who have ideas that are "not accepted science". The actions of seemingly otherwise honest men to ruin the reputations, even incite violence against the "rebels" is not Science at all, it's politics and playground bullying.

Examples abound. The ridicule of anyone who thought rocks fell from the sky. The absurd notion that rocks falling from the sky might have killed the Dinosaurs. The heresy that The Rock That Killed The Dinosaurs did not fall where It Was Supposed To. ( yep, 3 completely different arguments, over centuries, full of fury, lost friends, ruined careers, the Whole Soap Opera. )

Few have had as much printed as the Velikovsky Affair.

http://www.jerrypournelle.com/jerrypournelle.c/sci ence/velikovsky.htm

Simply, Velikovsky pointed out several things others had ignored. And published a popular book speculating that Venus erupted out of Jupiter, flew by Earth, and ended up where it is... in the process, wreaking havok on ancient civilizations, and creating legends that live to this day, albeit in distorted form.

Pretty crazy talk. With, to be fair, some logical tie ins to several ancient actual happenings.

What's important here is not the crazy ideas, but the vicious attacks from "Establishment" scientists. It's almost like Velikovsky had denied the Prophet Gore.

Middle class Mexicans in Mexico don't litter. They don't litter here, either.

Poor white people litter. So do poor brown people. And red people and blue and dark brown and.... and not all poor litter. There are cultural differences. ( not all cultures are equal. )

Criminals litter. Illegal trespassers here for free stuff litter.

As one who's seen it first-hand, I'll have to disagree. Some years ago I drove from Mexicali to San Filipe for a sailboat race and could have walked the entire way on the trash alongside the road and never touched pavement.
Long years in Fresno, CA showed that when the Mexicans leave a city park after a birthday party or soccer game they have no concept of picking up trash even though barrels are provided every 100'. Used diapers are scattered everywhere. They don't cross the US border and suddenly change habits. I've seen all kinds of stuff dumped on country roads. Read the book "Mexifornia" if you want someone else's perspective.
Homeless are just as bad. Whenever the city broke up a "camp", they needed a hazmat team to clean up. Some guy sued, claiming all his treasures were thrown out so now Fresno has to warehouse this trash. Instead of cracking down on these guys who cause the litter problem, California charges 10˘ for a plastic bag. Yep, inconvenience everybody but don't address the problem.
Yeah, plenty of rednecks dump old tires and furniture in the woods but it's a very small percentage of the problem. Of course it's mean-spirited and racist to point out the truth.

I'm all for equal rights no matter who you want to have sex with.

Telling me I'm evil because I have a preference because YOUR preference is different is hypocritical.

Maybe I don't understand because I have chosen to live with my own sex parts, and not mutilate them or deny they exist. ....... nope. The thing making such demands is crazy.

Telling lesbians they have to love penises is like telling gays they have to love vaginas. None of your darn business.

I humbly retract that third paragraph above. Righteous indignation at being told utterly weird dictatorial nonsense is no excuse for the insult, or the self righteousness in total.

I actually think the person means well.
They are Annoyingly demanding, the form of the comment as a demand, torqued me off.

But I can certainly understand the rebellion against established norms. The many nonsensical Taboos and attitudes about sex can be maddening.

And can anyone explain to me what the frack "cissgender" means????
