Sorry about the fancy words NJloco. I've been reading too much philosophy lately.

One thing I really appreciate about the iPad is the built-in dictionary utility, just select a word and choose "define", and up pops the dictionary entry.

Patrick, did you know that you can eat diatomaceous earth? I think McDonalds puts it in their milkshakes to make them thick. Their milkshakes are definitely thick, even after left in the car for the afternoon on a Texas Summer day. Yuck! Haven't tried one in decades; maybe they've changed.

I spread forty pounds of the stuff in the back yard. Supposed to kill fleas. Then I read later that it also kills nematodes that eat flea eggs. <sigh>. I blame the internet.

First time I saw the word I was on a weird kick. Decided to read a psychology book and had to look up a word at least every page. That is some crazy stuff to read.

Falloutnl, just in case you want to see some the numbers involved in the physics, this paper sums things up in fairly plane English. It's a pretty good place to start if you really want to understand the greenhouse theorys. It's perhaps a bit dated, but I don't think the understanding of physics has changed much since then. http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/greenhouse_data. html

Put that aside for the moment though, and consider this dichotomous dilemma... On one hand we have the AGW believers. On the other hand we have the AGW skeptic. The believers tell us that they can tell us how much warmer it will be in 100 years if we continue with business as usual. Let's assume they are correct. They also have plans, such as the Kyoto treaty that, according to their own calculations will only lower the temperature by a small fraction of a degree. Less than our ability to measure. Taking this action will cost developed countries trillions of dollars per year for the next century.

On the other hand, we have the skeptics, many of whom will tell you that man's impact on GW is negligible, and what we see is mostly due to natural variations. Because of this, they claim that programs like the Kyoto treaty will have no measurable effect.

The silly thing here, is that both sides come to the same basic conclusion. What ever the temperature is in 100 years, we won't be able to measure the difference between the two plans. The only real difference between them is the trillions of dollars per year that are earmarked for wealth redistribution. So you tell me. What's the real plan here?

One huge difference I see, is that if you were to take even 5% of the cash they want to spend on controlling CO2, and spent it on real problems, like feeding the poor, curing diseases, etc. the world will be much better off than spending 20 times as much on solutions that provide zero measurable results by design. I would even argue that the world would be better off without any such grand program. Just addressing problems ad hoc as we currently do.

Of course, either scenario fails to account for the ever acceleration rate of technological development being done in the world. The world will never go forward, business as usual for 100 years at a time. It's likely that in 100 years commons sources of power will be just as foreign to us as a nuclear power plant would be to a person from 100 years ago.

Thoughts?

I think McDonalds puts it in their milkshakes....

I'd have to read the ingredients, but I don't think so. BTW, they are NOT milkshakes. They are a whey based plastic product.

I worked at McDonalds back when they still were milkshakes, and the company still used the Mixmaster machines to mix the shakes. When they went to the "soft serve" machines and eliminated the human mixing, the old timers lamented that this was the end of the era. ( Ray Kroc was a Mixmaster salesman when he found the McDonald brother's store. so the end of the Mixmaster was the end of the Kroc era. )

Now, why don't I think so?

Money. There are cheaper thickeners from the milk processing than DTE. ( diatomaceous earth )

Remember when McDonalds was accused of using Earthworms in their meat? The company rep had a press conference, and told them earthworms are an excellent source of protein and a fine food ingredient, but that McDonalds absolutely did not use them in their beef. Because earthworms cost much more than beef, and also they advertise 100% beef, and wouldn't lie about that. There are laws.

You know diatomaceous earth is fossil based? Little sea critter skeletons.

As to Global Cooling.

The Con is simply a power and money grab based on lies and fear. It certainly won't help people in poor countries.

Energy costs directly affect lifestyle. Cheap energy makes you more wealthy, since you spend less heating and cooking and moving yourself and goods.

Expensive energy makes you poorer since every item you buy has to be moved at higher cost, heating and cooling is more of your budget, and cooking? Why do you think much of Africa is stripped of trees? Burned to cook food. Expensive energy. Poor people.

Why does China cast a pall of coal smoke over the planet? In large part, crappy tech cooking for food.... and "don't give a Damn if we kill another million peasants" environmental rules on industry.

With cheap energy you have clean water, cheap food, and good times. With expensive energy you have limited resources and poverty.

I'm a conservationist. ( not a conservative ) I'm all for clean water & air.

I also firmly believe in the Persian Way to raise a Child. ( update to modern times, of course, the original is for the Man Child )

Teach them Horsemanship, and Archery, and teach them to despise all lies.

As good advice today as 3000 years ago.

>>>I spread forty pounds of the stuff in the back yard.

I was thinking about fertilizing with mouse remains.

During the moving into the new barn . . . Buell stuff has been getting consolidated from 3 locations. Several hundred posters ended up atop the workbench and it was too damn cold to deal with them at the time.

But . . . I knew the cold wouldn't deter the mice from nibbling the paper and leaving mouse doo-doo all over them.

So . . I bought a dozen of the damnedest fierce looking good old fashion torture style mouse traps . . . baited them and established a 3P (poster protective perimeter) about the valuable posters.

Sure enough . . . the next morning, as I went to get the truck from the barn . . . the score stood at Court 2 - Mice 0.

Over the course of the next couple days . . . I kinda ran the score up (apparently mice are as drawn to Buells as we are) and then started feeling bad about the carnage.

I'd forgotten how frickin' brutal the real good old-fashioned mouse traps were. So MO (Mouse Ops) ceased at 1500 on 01262017.

So . . . I now have a farm house with stacks of posters everywhere, awaiting the BFST (Buell Filing and Sorting Team).

I've also got a gaggle of guests arriving this weekend . . . so I am busying myself today hiding guitars and moving vintage 2 wheelers from the living room to transform the place to something that looks like a place humans would live.

The sufficient other made the mistake (having been warned to not search for anything you don't want to see) of opening the barn on the last visit in December.

I'll just leave it at this . . . . I am as good a bachelor as 1313 or Rat.

:-)

I'd thought about tossing the mice into a wood chipper and distributing their remains about the property . . . but I am certain, with all the rights groups of every kind in nearby Woodstock . . . I'd have protesters out on the road.

...set some BIG traps for the protesters.

"naw, I'm from New Yawk, that's just modern art. Just don't....step...THERE."

Much as I hate to suggest it (being a die-hard "dog person" who's horribly allergic to felines)....get a barn cat.

Also - and this is a tip from the RV world - plain ol' dryer sheets help with the anti-critter cause. Somehow a box of Bounce, spread around openings, in cabinets, and around those "sensitive" areas, WILL help keep the little bastards away from your treasures. And they smell better than mothballs.

I can't make this stuff up.

Another trick - pack any "gateway" you can find - hole in a wall, gap around a window, whatever - with steel wool. Don't care how hungry or cold a critter is, it won't chew through metal to get to the other side.

Started sorting several hundred posters . . . . I have orders to have the place "livable" before family and dogs arrive tomorrow.

The race is on . . . crap is headed to the barn by the dolly load. . .

Haven't watched the video yet, but the strategy is spot on.

If it's solved and simple and anyone questioning it is a flat earther, then it should be easy to give a really precise number for the contribution to the problem by humans.

Just watched the video. This is the same guy who faked a climate experiment with Al Gore on TV some years ago. He hasn't learned anything since then. There were spots in that video that actually made me laugh at his ignorance. Or is it that he is asking me to have the level of ignorance necessary to accept his BS? I'm really not sure.

Nye has become a complete ass recently. Just like me, he has a BS in mechanical engineering. He worked as an engineer for a very short time (unlike me) and worked as a comedian for much of his time after that. He is no more qualified to speak about climate science than 90% (or more) of the members of Badweb.

Got to watch the video over lunch. Wow. Maybe Adams is hypnotizing me, but now that I am thinking about that cognitive dissonance snap, it is as plain as the nose on my face when you see it, and boy did Nye snap hard.

I don't understand why Nye feels so compelled to be a jerk about the whole thing, and why he has sold out to identity politics and personal attacks.

They don't care. Their religion tells them that lies to advance the cause are moral positives. It's a blessing to lie to the infidel.

A whole generation of pounding propaganda into the children's heads. Including calls to inform on the parents if they are heretics, or own guns, or believe in God. Plus secret training in revolution with warnings to hide it from parents.

The greenies are confident they can lie to your face since they've already convinced the children..... 20 years worth of dedicated lying.

Challenge the orthodoxy of the new gods and be cast out. Or in modern terms, jailed, riots to prevent lectures, lawsuits when facts pointed out, calls for the murder of heretics.

Funded by your tax dollars.

This one's just laughable. A distant light, 20 seconds? If you've read UFO sightings before you know headlights coming over a hill reflects off clouds..... or high altitude weather balloons still in direct sunlight after local dusk..... or.... or.....

Most of which I've seen in person. I've even seen foxfire, luminous moss, swamp gases. Local underwater caves in the finger lakes that may fill with natural gas with subterranean rumbles that go miles.

There's a lovely perpetual burning waterfall. ( may be posted now ) it's in the weird tourist guide. I've been there. ( natural gas vent in rock under water. Small flickering flames. Groovy )

Not to mention sun dogs, moon dogs, ( seen both, sometimes quite spectacular ) lenticular clouds ( the most common "not a lamp or fake Vrill saucer" cloud seen as UFO in books ) heck I've soared next to lenticular clouds. Aiming to miss the associated roll clouds that can rip a 747 to bits.

I'm not retreating to my basement in fear of little grey men quite yet.

I am curious about the cube story. The source is about as trustworthy as the weekly world news. ( a defunct super market tabloid specializing in aliens and celebrity werewolves )

Anyone remember a half season failure tv show set in the news room of a similar tabloid? The running gag was they'd investigate vampires or aliens & they were real, but because the story was published in their rag no one ever believed it. My favorite scene from the pilot was the editor handing out assignments. "Jones, you check out the demon triplets, Smith, you check out the reports of missing hookers, Harris, alligators in the sewer..." "Why do I always get the sewer?". : )
