You can go to any liberal arts college and get people to sign petitions......... for anything. Nuke N. Korea, ban hydrogen dioxide, send republicans to death camps, forced eugenics programs, make free aromatherapy a civil right, or ban gravity. Anything. Tell them it's an Obama program or to end injustices. ..... anything.

I notice the comedian types know better than to go to M.I.T. for that since it would take longer to get signatures for scientifically silly stuff. Harvard or Berkeley, you can get people to sign for mandatory sex reassignment.

That's why you get utter disbelief by a journalist that nazi gun laws made it easier to kill Jews, or that the Sun affects weather.

Tod. My questions above?

Cash for clunkers?

Two men walk into a bar.
The first says, "I'll have a drink of H2O, please."
The second says, "I'll have a drink of H20, too.

The second man died.

AND..... this is why you don't issue dates for the apocalypse. Better to keep it vague and uncertain.

One of the problems of the Climate Cult is we all should have been dead for a long time, if you believed one of the dozens of dire warning predictions. Seriously, by now the oceans have died, boiled, and the land is covered in the corpses of the starved masses.

But just because dishonest Greenies Lie on a daily basis about the end of the world, doesn't mean you shouldn't have some concern about it.

It just means you shouldn't believe THEM.

For example, pollution is real. There are places to be cleaned up all over America, not to mention the toxic hells that are China and the other Soviet style dictatorships.

A bunch of abandoned mines need attention, and more importantly, there's a major Dam on the Colorado that needs to be removed.

Think Global, act local, and use real science.

http://pjmedia.com/blog/congressman-on-going-green -minorities-wont-be-hurt-by-eschewing-fossil-fuels /

Congressman point out that wrecking the fossil fuel industry won't hurt the poor or minorities since they don't work those jobs.

The simple fact that energy costs are a MUCH higher percentage of poor people's budget that a millionaire Congressman seems to escape him. But, hey, He's pretty sure they won't connect that with his policies anyway.

“Did you know that no animal other than us creates waste? We’re the only ones who have waste. Nobody else has garbage cans because everything else is usable in some kind of way but we throw stuff in garbage cans like it’s useless. What if we looked at everything as having a useful value, we just don’t know what it is yet and we just tried to plug into that? I think it would be a powerful thing,” Ellison said.

Half correct. Garbage is a valuable product of civilization. Garbage dumps are the mines of the future. I'd happily pile a few tons of useful value on his lawn.

But the notion that animals don't create waste would come as a shock to the folk who mine the megatons of guano that serve as the chemical feed stock for fertilizer and explosives. I admit, few animals on earth are as full of waste as a typical Congressman, so perhaps it's a matter of perspective.

You can make a case for a clean environment being a right. You'd be wrong, it takes work and you have to pay for it. But "life, liberty, and the pursuit. ..." life is better with clean air and water. No doubt.

The error is the childish belief that you don't have to pay for it.

You want cars that burn less gas? ( so less pollution )

You have to pay for the technology. President Foghorn makes it the law all cars must get 50 mpg? You will pay for that. Have zero doubt. No law will make a company lose money on a car. They may choose to lose money on one model to make a bigger profit on a better selling one, or take tax money to sell the Volt under cost ( for a real world example ) but unless they make money on you one way or another, they go out of business.

Ditto space heaters or any product. You pay for clean. Or often the illusion.

Freeman Dyson, Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman.

All people, with flaws, and human, but someone you should listen carefully to when the subject is the nature of the world we live in.

And every one of the 3 has/had the one thing completely lacking in the "Science Is Settled" camp.

They can admit error.

Re: the Weekly Standard article above.

I'd already read the report on the lack of.... rigor, shall we say, in Social Sciences, and a few articles on outright fraud. I generally have a fairly low opinion of the soft "sciences" since it SEEMS to me that they are not actually dealing with actual science, but mostly wishful thinking.

That's not entirely fair, and I know it, since Marketing folk do use some actual theories and actually test them in the real world. There's a reason you buy brand name products, and it's not always that they are better.

finding that 97% of all made up statistics are believable 84% of the time can be shocking though. ; )

http://www.jerrypournelle.com/chaosmanor/dyson-sph eres-and-other-important-matters/

On the more fun side... Dyson Spheres.

Dr. Freeman Dyson came up with the idea, and Author Larry Niven the "Ringworld" refinement.

Simply, any industrial civilization will have an ever growing need for power. Solar power is diffuse, and requires a lot of area for collectors, but there is a lot of it. So the logical progression is to completely capture all the Sun's output by building a ball around the Sun, with the inside covered in solar collectors. A Dyson Sphere. Typically depicted in SF as a ball about the size of a life range ( liquid water ) planet's orbit.

Actually living on a Dyson Sphere is a bit more complicated, as it is dark on the outside, and the gravity low.( on the inside, you fall into the Sun ) The biggest problem seems to be there isn't enough mass in a typical Solar System to build one..

Of course, you could always make it smaller. One built just outside the temperature zone that would seriously weaken your hypothetical building material would be possible. Again, the question of where you live comes up... And you need the tech to disassemble the planets and turn them into solar panels & structure.

The Ringworld is a bit simpler... but still beyond any anticipated tech for the near future.

I personally doubt we have detected a Dyson Sphere. I am intrigued that we have no idea what we have detected. Some interesting guesses.

http://www.jerrypournelle.com/slowchange/SSX.html

The important part to remember about experimental aircraft.... rocket's especially, is they are experimental. They don't always work.

Stuff that always works is Production stuff. The only Production rockets were weapons of war, and we don't make ICBM's anymore. The production lines for the Titan and Ariane and Space X are small run shops in nature, no matter how big the items and factory buildings and company is. Yes, it's "mass production" but it's not "just in time" Auto makers mass production. Closer to a custom house like Hennessey.

So while it's natural and right to feel disappointment when a new rocket crashes, it's also right to think the next one will be better.

Computer models only work when you know the variables. When you push beyond the constraints of currently understood technology, you do not know the variables.

You don't trust computer models until the results are the same as wind tunnel or real world tests. ( Climate, eh? )

Sometimes the right scale for testing is 1 to 1.

SSTO is one of those things. if you build a rocket ship that is only 75% capable of working, it won't work. So you build it to 100% scale and see if it does.

It would be nice, and MUCH cheaper to make it reusable. So you can fix what doesn't work.

Every spacecraft up to and including the Shuttle, was based on the concepts of Artillery, not Air Forces. Rockets are disposable, and only the launching parts are reusable. Even the Shuttle wasn't reusable. It was rebuildable. That's like doing a restoration on your bike after every ride. ( which reminds me of my Suzuki GT380 )
