I bought an 03' XB9S last year used from my local HD Dealer in the Seattle area. I am very happy with the bike but ran over a chunk of metal a couple of weeks ago and wasted my rear tire. HD had put new tires on the bike when I bought it and said it was about $100 per tire they were providing at no charge}. When I brought the bike in to have the tire replaced, I just told them to put on another tire and was expecting a $200-$250 charge. Imagine my chagrin when the bill was $516! They said that the tires on the bike were racing tires and they had to replace the rear tire to match the front. This I understand, but I can not believe that when they gave me "free" tires with the purchase of the bike that they would use premium racing tires. I do not know the make and model of the tire that was put on the bike but will post when I find out Tuesday. They claim the cost of the tire before the $90 hour of labor and tax is about $380. Does this seem like too much money? Are there tires that are this costly? I appreciate any input that can be provided.

They don't call them stealerships for nothing. Should have went someplace like Seattle Cycle Center instead.

You can buy your tires yourself online and safe a bundle, ya they may charge you a little more on labor. I just replaced front and rear on mine bike, Pirelli Diablo, the standard equipment, $228.00 for the tires. Motoecyle-Superstore.com
Check out the cost of your tires.

I don't know what racing tires cost (or even what they are), but there is no need to put racing tires on your bike unless you're going racing.

I think I paid $99 for a front and $128 for a rear tire recently. Cyclegear charges $20 to mount a tire on the rim. The local HD dealer charges $32 to a mount tire, or $64 per tire if you leave the wheels on the bike.

Yes, you can. Dennis Kirk and Competition Accessories are two good sources. However then you usually need someone to install the tires [someone who doesn't screw up your rims, too!] since many stealerships and indies won't install tires you got over the internet or by mail order.
Flaco, what were the brand and model of these tires? I'm dying to know. I've run Michelin Pilot Roads on my Suzuki crotch rocket but now I'm running a Dunlop D205 Sportmax on my Suzi and Buell. KK

Thanks for the input. Eastside Harley is closed Sun & Mon but I will find out the make and model on Tuesday. Guess I'll just bite the bullet and pay the bastards this time and go somewhere else next time...

What kind of 'racing' tire is it?

$516 for tire is highway robbery. Outrageous.

I wouldn't bite the bullet, I'd call Buell Customer service, Harley Davidson Customer service, and the Better Business Bureau.

Ridiculous.

I agree with DJ. No way would I pay that bill, especially after they told you that they were giving you $100 tires for free when you bought the bike. There are a number of issues possibly at play here, none of them are positive, some could be downright criminal.

Worst case I can imagine would be an OEM replacement Dunlop D207, but even at full stealership retail inflated markup that should be well under $200 for the rear tire.

Even a top of the line racing slick doesn't cost what they are charging you. Most likely you got the OEM DOT street tire, which is a sport tire. Retail price for the generic version can be found from discount mail order houses for around $120 or less.

Buell has, quite obviously, no business in this transaction.

The price if the tire is immaterial to this dialogue.

Pick up the phone, politely call the dealer principle, read him the post and ask his opinion.

Something is not right.

I'd be surprised if a motorcycle dealer wants to loose a customer over something like this.

Think positive, work toward a solution.

Update on this situation:

I called the stealership and pitched a bitch about the price of the tire and the service guy admitted to making a mistake. Said the correct tire has a 250B designation (I'm still not sure of the make; probably the Dunlop)and he missed the B when he ordered the part. The 250 tire is the racing version and MUCH more expensive. They ended up taking off the 250 tire and putting the 250B tire on. The cost was a more realistic $260 after labor. I received an apology but they still charged an hour of labor... Lesson learned!

Joe
At least they were big enough to admit a mistake and correct the problem. Did they charge you for shipping on either of the tyres?

Their hand got called and they folded.

Probably not the first time they tried to screw someone they thought was going to take it.
