Check for an intake manifold air leak. Do this by setting a warm engine to a fast idle and spraying contact cleaner or WD40 all around the intake manifold seals, both at the cylinder head (usual culprit) and the carburetor. This is between carburetor and cylinder head (engine).

If you don't find a leak, then I suggest you give it some gas when starting it, possibly adjust the idle and have the choke and idle mixture checked. Increasing to a #45 pilot jet is standard practice.

Be sure to get the revs up when underway. If they are too low, say below 2500 or 3000 rpm, the bike will vibrate excessively and that is not good for the bike.

Let us know what you find. : )

First of all this is your first bike. And yes keep the RPM's up a little while shifting and riding. And do not forget to down shift while slowing down for a light or traffic. Don't lug it to much in traffic or the vibration on a 1 cyl. (even a 2cyl.) may seem to much. You will get used to it. It just takes time. Any new vehicle takes some kind of a learning curve. My 2000 M2 I let warm up for a few minutes on a cold start with the choke on. And some times, dependent on the temperature, I need to give a small shot of gas before I RESTART it. Bikes are like people we are all unique. You just need practice. I have had bikes since 74 and still like them as well as my cars and boats. Stay COOL and keep the rubber side down. Jim
