Ok, so I have a bad set up on my bike. I need to find out what I need to do to keep from wearing away the rear tire. I just got a new 207 on the rear and I have ridden only 600 miles and half of the tread is gone. The first tire lasted 2000 miles. This is without burnouts on either tire.

Tire wear is determined by many variables such as riding style, road surface, etc.
Not sure what you mean by "bad set up".

If you are happy with how your bike is handling, then you are really looking at tire choices.

In very general terms the more "performance" orientated tires have shorter tread life. Tires described as "touring" will likely provide higher mileage but provide less grip due to harder tread compounds.

You must determine what compromises you want to make. There are many tire threads on this board discussing just about every tire out there.

If your bike is not handling well you need to use the guidlines in the owners manual as a starting point and go from there.

As data point, on our XB9S&R with the original Dunlops we were getting about 3000miles on the rears 'till the wear bars started to show. Fronts were getting changed out with every other rear.

I have now put a set of the Pirelli Scorpion Syncs on both bikes. Not enough miles to determine tread life. They do turn in to the corner much more readily than the Dunlops.

It all depends on your riding style, road surface, temperature, inflation pressure etc. One thing I did to try and extend tire life is go with a D205 on the rear and keep the D207 up front. It is the best of both world, I get between 4500 - 5500 miles out of the rear and as much as 9,000 out of the front tire. Here are some tire mileage I have gotten.

D207/205 - Front - 9,000 miles, 5,700 miles rear
D616 - Front 8,400 miles (Still had tread but had to go), rear 4,400 miles
Diablo Strada - Front - 6,000 miles & still going, 5,000 miles rear
ContiForce - Frong - 4500 miles, Rear - 2600 miles.

I am still on the quest for the best tires for me. I have Stradas on the Uly. They are good but not my favorite for grooves, tar snakes and general grip. I have D205s of the M2 and they are very neutral tires and slow on turn in. I have not found the perfect tire yet, but will try the new Avons next.

you will chew up the dunlop 207 pretty quick. Mine only went 2800, and the first thousand of that was break-in..... in october. in alaska. on ice. so realistic pavement mileage for THAT tire on MY bike would be right around 2000 miles. I have much better life from the metzeler Z6, they hold on real well in rain, work well enough on gravel, and go over 6000 miles.
I seem to be getting similar life out of my Pirelli SYNC, and they grip better on gravel and hard pack dirt roads. seem to be pretty sticky on wet pavement too. so the Pirelli SYNC is my new favorite tire for the XB12. Your Mileage May Vary.

One thing I should add: they work well with around 36 PSI front and rear, and get quite warm and noticeably "squishy" with less than 20 PSI. at least at high speeds.
so dont do that.

I have a set up that is great for me. It handles great. Just going thru tires. The tires are not waring just in the middle it is all over. As much as I hated my mets on my GSXR they did have a longer life. I have just had the belt give out on me. going to change over to the 06 drive.
