I recently purchased an 06 xb12ss she runs great and is the funnest machine I ever owned but i have an intermitent problem after running awhile i get a dead spot in the low end of the throttle and a hesitation and cough when attempting to roll on or after I let it coast coming into a stop or merge at first it was no biggie but the problem is getting a little more frequent and can get a little hairy if you are trying to get out of the way of traffic and she hesitates any suggestions will help as the dealer tells me its ok

Mine started like that. A few backfires, some sputtering, and then it got worse and worse, to the point where it backfires and dies a few times a week. It's worse in cold weather (33-40 degrees), and it's a lot worse in the rain. The dealer also tells me this is "representative of product" but I call bullshit on that. Bikes aren't supposed to backfire and die (no matter what the most recent poster on that thread says). In my opinion, this is a serious safety defect. I took it to the dealer 4 times, and they can't fix it. WA has a lemon law that also covers bikes over 750 cc. I took the first step and wrote a letter to Buell requesting repurchase of my bike. This is the most frustrating experience I've ever had with a motorcycle. When it runs good (warm out, warm engine, dry out, the stars align, whatever), it runs great. It has gobs of power and it's a complete blast to ride. But I have this fear now at every damn stop sign and traffic signal, at every intersection and every time I have to turn into traffic. Will it die? Will it sputter and backfire and lose power for a few seconds? Will it die as I'm cornering and dump me (this has almost happened on two occasions - throttle while cornering, the bike backfires and loses power, almost drops me)? I had some good advice on the following thread about how to find the problem, but 1) it's intermittent enough that I'd just be guessing on what may or may not fix it, and 2) I just paid like 12k for the bike & warranty and I've only had it a few months and the damn thing should work right and I shouldn't have to be tinkering with a brand-new motorcycle just to get a decent ride out of it.

Brumbear,
Did the dealer zero the TPS? If not, that may help.

He said he had I think I might have an inkling of whats going on, I accidently bought the race air filter after a mouse had his way with mine and I noticed the problem has gotten worse since then, as well as the temp has dropped outside, I think I might be to lean fuel wise. I am going to ask if he can enrichen the fuel slighly or if I just put a race ecm and a/f and have them do it will that remap the fuel system and possibly cure the problem

Just ordered the Pro series filter.
The bike is stock. You all think
to lean if I install Pro series filter.
Shouldnt the stock ECM adjust to it?

Filter won't change it that bad.

Not hardly at all.

That's not the problem. You have other issues.

ECM will adjust to it, don't worry.

You'll be fine.

If the bike is unmodified, 80% of running issues center around TPS setting & timing. Are your plugs in good condition?

Cringblast, if you have more exhaust coming out, you should compensate with more air going in, so I would recommend the hi-flo a/c element. Also, the race ECM will increase pulse width of the injectors and adjust the timing to accommodate for the performance mods. The stock ECM will adjust the AFV to compensate to a certain point, but the race ECM will be your best bet.

Should be getten filter this week.
Will put it on and see what happens.
Hope the stock ECM will be fine and should be able to handle it for now. We'll see.

Odin,
I have cruised at 3000 rpms a few times
to reset the AFV but I see other post your talken 3600 or more for at least 15 min.
Once I put new air filter in cruise at 3600 rpm or more for how long. I looked in service manual for this but did not see anything on it. Does it matter which gear ?
Like I say earlier I dont want to run toooooo
lean.
C

I am starting to get a little nervous all the stumbles off idle all the cough through the airbox problems I am reading about, I love this bike but I just came off a nightmare triumph that I just got fed up with and sold and I wasn't riding harley for years cause I bought a 1992 fatboy brand new and that machine blew 2 engines and a trans all warrentee but all inferior product related and Inever got 1000 good miles out of it, I am hoping with all my heart I do not go through with this crap again, I really have never ridden a more fun and flickable machine but I am getting nervous

How was it straightened out?
I have a similar problem on a XB12scg; exhaust smells rich... What did they do?
