I would like to add that the X1 doesn't really need to be tuned in the conventional sense. Get rid of the stock ECM and buy a RACE ECM. The Race ECM gets rid of the Frumpy throttle response and flat spot at mid range. For the perfectionist, if "tuning" a fuelie is what you want to do, purchase a Power Commander. That way you can very easily tune the FI with a laptop computer without tearing the bike apart and getting messy. The parts guy at the local HD/Buell shop even went so far as to create two fuel maps with his Power Commander. One for out right racing and the other for more economy. He just reloads the Power Commander in a few minutes for what style he wants.

Which ever model you chose most likely you will want to improve the performance. Anything that keeps the bike within EPA regs needs to be removed for starters.

I bought a 00 x1 that already has the race kit and aluminum shifter. I've had it about a week and have put nearly 300 miles on it. Nice bike.

Welcome to the disease Jeff. FYI: The original shifter was also aluminum, but of a more complex and sloppy design (goofy linkage).

EPA Regs make me laugh...decrease the performance of a motor and it exhausts unburned fuel. Remove said EPA crap and whoa look at that gas milage goes up.

Hi, all!

I am a happy owner of a second-hand '98 S1, which I just bought off the Internet without even seeing it first. Now, on the otherwise excellent first ride the motor started leaking oil from somewhere near the top of the front cylinder. By the time I got back home, the left leg of my leathers was pretty well oiled. I figure it was the bike's way of marking its new owner.

I think the problem I am having must be the rocker box leak that I have seen mentioned quite often. However, I don't remember ever reading about how to reliably fix the leak. So, if anyone could point me to the information, I would be very happy indeed.

Cheers,
Semi

Greetings All,
I'm new to this board as well as Buell motorcycles. I've purchased a 2001 M2 Cyclone, site unseen, and will be picking it up in Ft. Lauderdale next week. I live in Puerto Rico and there are no Buell dealers here. Soo, I will be depending on your collective knowledge to assist me. As far as break-in goes I plan to ride the M2 around FL for a week before shipping it to PR. I was planning on changing both the engine oil and the primary oil at between 100 and 200 miles and again at 500 miles. What tools will I need to do this.(I've ordered a shop manual but it is at the dealer were I willl be picking up the bike.) Also are there any problems I should look for during the initial break in? Thanks in advance. I'm sure I'll be making more post before I pick up the bike.

Gents,
I need some wisdom from previous M2 owners. I'm a long time rider but new to the Buell. I will be flying to Seattle soon to pick up a 2000 M2 that has about 2,000 miles on it. I'll be riding it back a distance of about 900 miles over the next 2 days. I can only carry what will fit in a small backpack.
Questions:
Do Buells come with a tool kit?
Anything on the bike I should check prior to taking off on the return trip?
Any input or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks
Cliff

Clif,
surf to the Cruztools web site and make a list of what they include in their kits for Buells. That would be a good starting point for a quick road kit, or just buy the kit if you're in a hurry. Buells do not come with a tool kit like my 1983 Honda did.

Freshen the fluids, buy a spare quart of oil before you leave the dealership. Make sure the breather bolts are tight. Check the oil line that runs across the rear inside upper corner of the primary case for rubbing, I put a sleeve on mine, new ones come sleeved already. Look at the rocker covers for the start of gasket leaks. Check all the nuts and bolts for tightness. Verify that the battery strap is snug. Verify the screws that secure the headlight brackets to the fork tubes are snug. Ensure the final drive belt is not too tight. Ensure the primary chain is properly adjusted. Ensure the throttle cables are properly adjusted. Enjoy the ride, you should be fine, just watch your mirrors when stopped in traffic. My '00 M2 with 15,000 miles on it ran flawlessly on my 2,500 mile cross country trip, and an additional 500 miles at the halfway point (18,000 total on the bike). I had no reason to believe it wouldn't have continued to run well for the next 3-4000 miles I had planned for the trip.

Post a trip report once you get home. Where's home? Print out a copy of the Rider's Assistance Network from the site here, and take along a printout of the various dealerships along your way. All you should need to stop for is the bathroom and food, but it's nice to know where they are along the way.

Mikej:

AWESOME wrap up of the "pre-flight" for a Buell ride/trip.

Cliff: Welcome and please keep us posted. My bet is you're gonna love the ride. I'd reduce Mike's list to a 1, 2, 3, style checklist. Pay particular attention to insuring the belt is not too tight...many are. When it seems like it's way too loose, it's about right. Sock away the spare quart of 15-40, check your protective gear and go get'em!

Remember..the MOST important piece of safety equipment is holding onto the handlebars.

Ride safe,
Court

Ensure that tire pressure, final drive belt, and suspension preload settings are in spec. Check that you have the new 10R12 instead of the old 6R12 spark plugs.

Do NOT fill engine oil more than halfway between the "full" and "1/2 quart low" marks, and only check oil soon after just shutting down the engine.

Has anyone a clue on whats applicable on both M2,S1 and X1

M2 is the forgotten bike. You can get a tach kit like most of us have done, footpegs are universal. You can cut down your license plate bracket or ASB is supposed to be coming out with one for the M2.

The M2 and its greatness is a secret.

There are a lot of people buying these things unseen.

I too purchased a 1998 S1 6 weeks ago from a dealer in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Outrageous Deal on it. I had never seen a Buell close up and had absolutely no idea what it rode like. I wondered if I was going to like it once I jumped in the saddle. At the time they still had a 98 M2 and a 99 S3. There was 25km on it when I picked it up and I had to drive it back to Newfoundland. There are no Buell Dealers here but the local Harley Dealer has been very helpful on service related issues, so far no warranty problems.

For those unfamilar with my Province, Newfoundland is an Island located off the mainland of Canada, it is the most easterly province accessible only by boat or plane. My first ride was 1500km with the first 800km being very slow and boring, but after that it was too much fun for one person and I am not sharing.

From what I can determine its the only one in the Province. Some of the HOG Guys still wonder what it is until they start asking. The only problem is every time I gas up I am stopped for 10 minutes answering questions about it.

At this point I wouldn't trade it for anything, well maybe a faster one.

I would recommend them to anyone thinking about purchasing one of these motorcycles.

Wichburner,
The license plate bracket from ASB is very nice. Saw it in Colorado, Tat had a bunch of new stuff to show off.
Regarding the tach thing, check this link (stuff from the Knowlege Vault, from January 01) http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/3842/4938.html?979769375

welcome to the club s1's rock you'll get used to the questions.... but it's really hard to get rid of the sh*t eatin grin that seems to happen during every ride.

the only real problems are the poor exchange rate for upgrade goodies
all i can suggest is that you eyeball the beast before every ride and enjoy

Blake..

Whenever I ride my M2, I think... yea, not only am I man enough to ride a Buell, but I am man enough to keep it running and not whine about it.

You get all that, and also "I'm man enough to handle this narrow seat on top of everything else"....

You are... "da man"...!

And thanks for the tip on those napolean bar end mirrors... I have had them on for a month now, they are fantastic! I can't even remember what my elbows look like!

Bill: A gel insert helps the seat situation significantly. Pic of gel pad on MAW site. Motorcycle Accesory Warehouse sells the gel pads. Have your trusted local upholsterer carve out a space in the foam and lay in the gel in it's nylon bag, recover and say, ohhhhhh yeaaaaahhh baaaaabeeeee! Have him mount the gel between the seat pan and the foam (carve the cavity for the gel pad from the underside of the foam not the top). A very cheap fix for the stock pre '99 seats.

Wenchtoaster: Pegs are Banke rearsets with billet pegs and can be seen more closely in my June 16, 2001 post in the "Ergonomics" subtopic in the Knowledge Vault (the above hyperlink will fail once the referenced post gets archived; if that happens just search for the date of post in the archives of that subtopic).

Clip-ons are Telefix III's.

I lucked into a very close match to my idea of a perfect '97 M2 Cyclone on eBay and stole it from a guy in Queens for $6K. The '00 M2 sitting at home in Texas will soon be up for sale. :)

A dealer (non Harley) near me has a 95 S2 for sale......I'm not familiar with the earlier Buells....can anyone give input about this bike? How is it regarded relative to other Buells? I'm a Buell newbie, though I've been riding since '77. Thanks all!

Scott,

S2 owners tend to be pretty fond of their bikes. Take a look at MikeJ's discussion about replacing his M2 (look through the archives, too), us S2 owners ganged up on him.

Bottom line, the S2 was the first product after Harley bought into Buell. It was an all-out effort to bring a bike to market, cost be damned. It's got a lot of really neat stuff that they later dropped from the S3, which is the cost reduced version. I'm pretty sure they lost money on the S2's, but they established themselves in the market.

On the flip side, it's down on power compared to the later Buells. It's not hard to fix, though.

Few people who buy an S2 end up regretting it.

Good luck,
AW

>>>S2 owners tend to be pretty fond of their bikes.

Scott, pardon the gross inaccuracy propagated by my dear friend and colleauge. He has, twinxt you an I, been spending a great deal of time exposed to the noxious and cerebrally depriving effect of NO2.

S2 owners are FANATICAL about their bikes.

Before the S2 was a year old some folks took some cheap shots at it and I challenged one to bring his preferred steed and accompany me on a jaunt circumnavigating this great land. Anyone requiring more than oil, gas or tires would contribute $5k to MDA.

He, on July 8, 1995, failed to show. I had nowhere else to go, so I rode through 37 states in the next 31 days.

Look around and you'll find that many Buell owners, after having another, have added an S2 to their collection. I've yet to see someone do that and then sell it. These are keepers.

HINT: Ask Mr. Wilson, who owns more Buells than many dealerships stock, what he hops on when he just wants (using Erik Buell's words) to "just go ride a motorcycle"?

Down on power? True. In much the same way that my Smith and Wesson Model 686 compared to a Desert Eagle. You want big power, pass on the S2, buy a Bandit 1200.

You want a bike that is to motorcycles what a Sunrise in the Sierras is to the Soul.....Buell S2.

In addition....there is a WEALTH of knowledge and support available as these bikes are owned by the most anally retentive people in the world.

Court (Wilson's an Engineer, I am a writer. You want to know WHY, ask me. You want to know HOW, ask him. I am far less boring than he.. By the way, NEVER ask Blake)

Thanks for the supportive responses concerning the S2! I almost wish I hadn't found the bike, as I am as yet unprepared to buy another bike. Hopefully it will sit there a little while.....Maybe I should try to keep it hidden, but here's a link for anyone else who may be interested: http://catalog.ascycles.com/viewProduct.cfm?item_id=503304

Is yellow an unusual color for this year S2?
