I recently won a bid on an excellent Firebolt XB12. I picked up the bike and it is in excellent shape. It has a ton of custom and aftermarket stuff on it. I have a few questions about it, seeing as how this is my first Buell. First off the bike has occasional hiccups at various points in the RPM range, I would like get this figured out so I can enjoy worry free highway trips. The bike came with a carbon fiber air box with scoops in it. I thought it could be getting to much air so I got a stock box, no change. I'll do my best to describe the problem, it goes from riding fine to a, "blaaaoooh, blua, blua, bluuuuhh", then it picks up where it left off and runs fine for a while. The engine light comes on during these stints. It has been stroked to 1450cc's, has a micron exh., K&N, and the guy that sold it to me said it has a XB9 ecm for the quicker revs. He included the stock ECM. The ECM in the bike says BX9US20CB050 and the stock says BX1US21GB231. Is putting a XB9 ECM on a XB12 common? Could this cause the hiccups if it is not calibrated for 1450cc's? I hooked the stock ECM up to ride and see if it solved the problem, the engine light came on so I disconnected and reconnected the battery to see if this would reset it, light stayed on. Then I looked at the ECM again and noticed the stock one has a little electrical connection between the two wiring harnesses that I couldn't find the female end for, the XB9 ECM doesn't have this. I didn't ride it and just put the XB9 ECM back in. I also got the DirectLink but it doesn't seem to work with my laptop. Do I need to get the XB9 ECM calibrated to the TPS? Can any HD shop recalibrate my Buell TPS? When the bike runs right it is a monster but it makes me look like a fool when I am taking off then it starts to sound like it is sufficating and bogging down. The guy said Appleton Buell set it up and did the engine work. It came from Michigan and I live in Mississippi, could there be a problem because elevation? The Dyno sheets I got with it are from HD of Appleton and read 100.36HP and 83.4ft/lbs of tq. I would love to let my buddy with a ZX10 ride it, he loves it, and I would like to see his reaction afterwards but I don't want him to experience the bogging and hiccuping.

These are the ECM's. The one on the left with red is the XB12 with the little electrical connection that I can't find the female for. The XB9 (yellow) doesn't have this and it's busted on the bolt flanges. Should I just buy a real "race" ECM and dump the XB9 ECM? Hopefully that would stop the stuttering!

Unless the XB89 ECM was tuned with Directlink after installing it, I certainly wouldn't run it. We have't done this yet, so I can't say how different the fueling would be from one to the other. If it came with Directlink (the program plus the key?) then it is likely it has been tuned with Directlink.

But the numbers that you've posted don't seem very good for a 1450cc bike that is running a micron. Heck, we can get those numbers from a stock 1200CC displacement with a directlink tuned micron. Appleton did the tuning? If the tuner doesn't know the tricks for tuning with directlink, it would be a good running bike when it left the dyno but would get worse after running for a while. I'd recommend getting the AFV value checked. I wouldn't be surprised to see a low value there given the way it is running. I can't say I've seen good results on the DirectLink tuning from Appleton. They haven't been tuning the closed loop range correctly on the bikes I've experienced so far, which is causing AFV skew.

Resetting the TPS would be a good idea for either ECM just to know it is right. If it is off, all bets are off on how the bike will run. If you can get Directlink running on your computer, you'll be able to reset it for the ECM that you have the key for (likely the XB9 ECM). But you won't be able to reset it with the other ECM unless you have a second directlink key for that ECM.

The XB9 will give higher revs, not quicker revs. And unless the bike has other good things done to the crank and heads, running the XB12 to 7500 is probably not a good idea.

That center lead is the exhaust servo connection, which you aren't using. But if you put the XB12 ECM in there without the servo connected, it will throw a code (the light on the dash). You'll need to either reconnect the servo (electrically, not mechanically) or put a servo emulator on it.

Dang. That is EXACTLY what I have/am experiencing with my DL tuned ULY. Tuned first at Appleton, then at G'ville. Same result. Runs fine on Dyno, I ride it home and poof. Runs great WOT and say above 3K rpm. Idles poorly and I just about can't get it going from a stop. Has to be revved to ~3K or it bogs/dies. I am going to install my stock ECM, get the TPS/AFV set and make sure the bike runs okay (some people have mentioned I may have a faulty TPS). IF it runs fine with stock ECM I will have to get it DL tuned again or buy a American Sport Bike MAP. If it has a faulty component then I owe the tuners an apology. At any rate this has been a frustrating deal for me.

Well, I installed the stock ECM and roede for ~20 miles on the interstate at a constant RPM. Bike now runs great so apparently Direct link tunes by Appleton and Gainesville HD were done improperly. My advice is buy a MAP from American Sport Bike or go to a tuner with some references. Scott Koral at Tampa HD is one of these for those of us in central FL.
