Just bought an '03 XB9S and can't get it started previous owner said he had no problems. I ran the battery down trying to start it then recharged and tried ether but still no luck. Wondering if fouled plugs are the problem or if anyone had any suggestions. It is killing me to have it sit here but not be able to ride. Thanks

Assuming you have fresh gas in it and it has not been worked on recently, fouled plugs sounds like a good place to start looking.

Will it turn over with the engine cutoff/run switch turned off? Some bikes do. Just turn it on?

Does the engine turn over? If it does, just keep the three necessities in mind - air, fuel and fire.

Air - Check for any blockages in the intake or exhaust.

Fuel - Make sure you have some (and make sure it's getting to where it needs to be). BTW, no fuel valve on an XB.

Fire - Check to see if you're getting spark (I usually just pull one of the plugs, put the wire on, set the electrode against the head and thumb the starter, repeat for the other plug). Now keep in mind that even if you can see spark it might not be strong enough to be able to light off the charge, but it tells you that you're getting spark that far.

I'm guessing if you run through these systematically, you'll get it fired.

It's possible that the sidestand switch or neutral switch could be kaput. Not knowing their condition, try pulling in the clutch lever while cranking, making sure the stop/run switch is in run. One of the three switches should be good to enable spark.

If still no-go, look at the fuses, esp. the ignition fuse.

Just had the same problem on my '03 XB9SL it was the 'stater relay', cost $ 5.00, its under the seat the gray relay in the tray that holes (4) of them. One is missing the one you need to replace is next to that missing slot.
