I need help with this one, and I doubt Buell introduced a new whistling feature on the 06 12R. Starnge whistling sound at about 30-40 MPH and around 3,000 RPM on the tack in 2nd and 3rd gears. This sound disappears in any other gear, even if if Im in the same RPM/ speed zones. Has anyone got a clue what Im talking about or even a WAG (Wild Guess)

Which of the parameters would you estimate makes a difference in the whistling: RPM or MPH? If RPM, it could be motor/drivetrain related. If MPH, then maybe just wind noise?? Of course, the fact that the noise is limited to 2nd and 3rd gear would seem to indicate drivetrain.

How about that for a WAG : )

Let's know what you find out.

I've heard similar from the primary case, primary chain? only happens once or twice when new. Just keep riding...unless it's really bad then take it back to the dealer.

Don't the 06 models have a different air intake path?

Hmmm, yes the 06 models engine breathes through a small mesh opening behind the gas cap. This sound is VERy faint, I think Ive got a good ear to pick this sound up, nothing mechanically to the bike has changed, but Ive never heard this sound before jsut recently. OPTO are you saying that this sound goes away after a while?
Thanks!
Thanks for the WAG Henrik

Yeh, I've heard a sound like that once when my XB12S was new and now once on the Uly, that sound only ever lasted for the one ride on the S, but it comes back very faintly occasionally on the Uly. I'm not worried about it.

To better describe this sound, it has turned into a small chatter with a chiming sound to it. I wonder what it could be.

Umm, that doesn't sound too good. If you think it's a definite bad sound then best to take it to the dealer very soon, or at least get a 2nd opinion from a Buell rider who you can trust to take your bike for a ride. If in doubt, take it back. If your noise is changing then that's also a bad sign. But you did say it's very faint?

Yes, its faint. But its there and it bothers me. Its just so faint Im afraid that the mechanics at the dealer wont hear what Im talking about. Its hard because only the owner of the bike van detect such a small change in the sound of the engine.

I agree with opto, a changing sound would deserve looking into.

Can you distinguish which side of the bike you hear the sound the loudest?

Hey guys, I talked with a service tach at Bartels, HD and he said to brin ght ebike in for the 5,000 mile service. He said it might be the primary chain is loose, and that it needs to be tightened. He also mentioned that new trannys tend to have a whirring noise for a little while. I am vconvinced thgis sound is comming from the tranny and not the engine because it can only be heard when I give the bike throttle in neuatral or any gear. When sitting in neautral the engine sounds fine so it must be comming from the transmission right?

So, are you telling us that the only time it doesn't make the noise is when it's idling?

Damn, that's gonna be a tough one to chase down...

This is a curveball, but try it. I thought that my bike made whistling sounds, too. When I did this or that, it seemed to whistle. It turned out that my Ari helmet whistles if I tip my head down to look at the guages and the correlation between my control inputs on the bike and the whistling were only coincidental.

Hi Ara,
Im steps ahead of you. I lost my Scorpion helmet and used my wifes HJC a couple days ago to see is that was it and the sound still persists. I rode it to work today but I think Ill take the cage tomorrow, I dont want to incur any costly repairs before the 5,000 Mile service on Friday.
Thanks for the suggestion though

Vaneo1: Not to thread jack, but what model Scorpion do you have? Do you have the chin skirt? What is the coldest temperature you have ridden in with this helmet? I hear the Scorpion's have decent ventilation, but does it allow air in when the vents are closed? Does it leak when it rains?
Questions, questions...so many questions...!

I have the EXO-700 Geronimo blu/White. I was thinking about getting the chin skirt but havent got around to it yet. TBH Im not a huge fan of chin skirts because they always fall of when your trying to pull the helmet off. At least thats what my old HJC stinger helmet did. Heres a whole thread on scorpion helmets on another bike site. I posted mine their as well.
