All,

Yes the helmet OEMs do use different ways of fitting. Shoei for one tends to be more rounded in its interior fitting. Thus the pressure points front and rear for some. The Arai is fitted more for the elongated head types. I can say this though I just got rid of my RF700(age before beauty)and I could really feel thge front pressure point. The RF800 and TC series seem to fit the elongated head types better.

Both the Arai and Shoei are great helmet OEMs.

HJC now makes a Snell approved helmet that looks and fits alot like the Shoei. It is very affordable and is available with really neat graphics in different color schemes. The face shield mechanism is almost a copy of Shoei's design.

Arai also has, within it's range; differnt "head shapes". I have some Rx7RR3's and just got an Rx7RR4. These are very comfy but the venting system is designed primarily for speeds you'll not see on the street. Yellow last week as $598.

Another choice is the Quantum/f series. A slightly different shape and super comfy with a venting system that will serve you well.

Advantage of Arai's is the ADSIS visor system (improved for 2001) and the washable interior and changeable cheekpads (I use 10mm oversize).

I have some Shoei's which are also an excellent choice.

AGV, on their website, has some excellent buys and the quality is good. (Riding partner just bought 3).

Bottom line is that within the "name brands" as mentioned, it's pretty subjective. I've, lately, become a huge fam of very visible stuff...hence the Hi-Viz stich and new bright helmets.

BONUS: The Snell 2000 standard (which makes an infitesimally small change) has gone into effect and killer buys are to be had on Snell95 lids.

GREAT SOURCES: online joints like www.helmetshop.com www.helmethouse.com and, maybe the best locally, is the New York IMS show.

Blake, If you want an Arai and can't find it at the show, Ducati (across the street) can get it for you in a day, plus they have an excellent selection in stock. I have to go to a reception for Sir John Bough Friday and am resising the urge to buy the yellow/silver Arai Reed Replica.

Let me know if I can help !

Blake,

You can get some real good prices on new Quantum/fs on E-Bay. The vent system work better at regular highway speeds and the old Quantum/e got the best review from MCN. The article should still be on line. I think the Quantum is round? Check out their website at www.araiamerica.com You might want to try MAW, they will have the 2000 graphics on clearance pretty soon, the 2001 are in their current catalog. Also check out www.helmetharbor.com. Helmetharbor has been recommenced by other on ATC and here. Regardless, if you go mailorder review the return policy and measure twice before ordering to make sure you can return if it doesn't fit. A good thing about the ARAI is that you can order padding to really get a custom fit. Next helmet will most likely be an ARAI, the Bieffee fits me well and was a cost alternative, but has too much wind noise and isn't vented right.

Helmets should fit a little snug to work correctly. Have someone else do the measuring to get accurate results. Follow the instructions on the website.

NEVER BUY A USED HELMET. THE PLASTIC/RESIN HAS A FINITE SHELF/USE LIFE (just like a hardhat). ANY DROPS WILL DAMAGE THE INTERNAL LINER (that's the part that slows down you head so your brain won't cantaloupe).

Whew, I'm doing too much research. How come I can't just pick a color?

All,
This link http://www.newenough.com/bargain.htm has some really cheap Joe Rocket Cordura Jackets (at least I think they are cheap).

So do I understand correctly that the Arai Quantum/f is more of a "Shoei fit" Arai? or do I have it backwards redundantly repeated multiple times! :-)

I live in the desert ( Ridgecrest, Ca ) and cooling is second only to safety in choosing a helmet for me. I've got a Shoei ( off-road ) now and really like it but anything felt great after the old Bell I had...I haven't been able to find place in SoCal to try on Arai's. Found lots of Shoei's at Chaparral, I liked the X-SP-II, it felt great, but for $600 it should! ;-)

I'm going to buy a new helmet tomorrow and was looking at Shoei's but the Quantum/f is in my price range, at least at the prices I found at helmetharbor.com! It's got great reviews and as a bonus I think I like the "Haga yellow" better than any factory paint I've seen....Sounds like I'll be able to "adjust" the fit a bit with the pads....Comments? Anybody out there with a X-SP II?

Court - Why did you pick the Rx7RR4 over the Quantum/f or the Shoei X-SP II ? From what I've read the Quantum/f should be a better street helmet, are you going to be logging some track time??? :-)

Chris,

Try checking at this link:
http://cyclesaver.motorcycle.com/
Apparently they are selling the 2000 Graphics. They are also accessible through http://www.motorcycle.com where they have their sells information.

Hi Arvel,

I saw that a few days ago. That ad is what started me looking at the Quantum/f with the cool (IMHO) Haga paint job. Just something right about Flames and a Missile for a Buell riding helmet! Cyclesaver is alittle less than Helmet Harbor($4) but that doesn't include shipping.

Only thing stopping me from ordering is I haven't had an Arai on my head....ever. But I'm about ready to risk the restock charge;-)

All,

Found this on Motorcycle Online:

Quote:

It seems that just about every enthusiast has an "Arai head." How can that be? Is it a genetic thing? Do all enthusiasts share identically shaped heads?

Perhaps it's because Arai features two distinct shell shapes: the long oval (LO) and the round oval (RO).

The LO is the traditional Arai shell shape, designed to fit heads that are narrower from side to side, giving more room at the forehead and alleviating the infamous forehead pinch common with some competitors. Arai's Signet series helmets incorporate the LO shell shape.

Now, how do you tell which head you have, long or round?

Christopher:

In the spirit of journalistic integrity, I didn't "choose" the RX7RR4's, nor would I spend (in most cases) my money on one. They were freebies from Arai. The one I bought last week was for a co-worker who's taking his new custom made Lomborghini Countache to a track day.

If I were spending my own money for a helmet right now (and I am about to) it's be the YELLOW Arai Quantum/f.

Reasons:

Arai is an incredible quality helmet

Quantum/f is, indeed, a better street helmet

Buying a helmet that is NOT yellow is compromising safety in New York City.

Conclusion:

ANY top quality helmet is good. AGV has some KILLER deals on their website. I have Shoei's I like.

Suggestion:

Troll and look unitl you find a killer deal (currently Motorcycle Accsory Warehouse is in the hunt) on an Arai Quantum/f. You'll never regret it.

Gads, I am opinionated today!

Thanks Court,

I've settled on Brand and Model....Now if I could just decide between the Haga and
the Raptor.... LOL

FWIW - I checked on MAW ( on closeout, no returns) and Helmet Harbor is a touch
less shipped with the possibility of an exchange for $25...

Chris

P.S.
Thanks for the info, if you ever get out West I'll buy you a cold one!

Greetings everyone, it's nice and sunny in Milwaukee and the snow is vanishing. Can't wait much longer, so I started looking for jackets and other assorted riding apparrel. I just picked up a SHOEI RF-900 (axis yellow, of course) and I saw some nice jackets as well.

Does anyone know anything about CYCLOAK jackets? (cycloak.com) There made by REIMA. Reima has been in the snowmobile jacket buisiness for years and makes some good stuff. I've talked to some snowmobilers and they love their jackets. They just started making the motorcycle jackets this year. They made out of cordura, gortex, and have kevlar reinforced pads on the shoulders and elbows. There are also soft foam/gel type pads in the shoulders, elbows, and back. The jacket IMHO has a nice fit and finish, and has some nice extras like a zippered sleeve/wrist pocket on the left arm(for the pesky toll-roads) and has a pocket on the bottom back of the jacket for gloves. They also make snap-in/(zip-in?) pants for the jacket.

Are the fabric jackets as durable in a crash as leather? Do they slide as well? I have always liked the looks of leather but the fabric jackets add so much versatility and functionality that it is becoming very hard to justify a leather.

Just to take up a little more room. Can anyone recommend some good riding gloves? Are the Buell gloves worth considering?

Blastin,
I have a pair of the Buell Vortex race gloves that were great when I went for a 60MPH slide. Love to get another pair, but Buell has discontinued. Currently have the Buell Carbon fiber gloves. Have about 5000 miles on 'em and they fit/feel great. Hope I don't get to test 'em like the others.

Not trying to sell a product, but got a pair of Draggin' Jeans today, although I'm not going to be able to ride with 'em on until next month.

I have never had experience with Kevlar. The pictures looked as if the material would be rough, but it's actually very soft. The kevlar in the seat and knees felt fine when I tried them on. I ordered a length longer than my normal jeans, so I wouldn't be sporting the high-water "See my socks!" look. They fit great. The jeans were comfortable when I sat on the bike, even when walking around the house. Now I can go for short hops across town without gearing up. Hopefully I'll never give a report on how they handle a get-off.

Blastin, according to the info from Areostich (www.riderwearhouse.com) THEIR 500 denier Cordura(c) nylon holds up better than leather.

Like you, I was contemplating leather vs. nylon and which jacket last Fall. If archives exist for this section you can check them out. I have a pair of leather bibs from Stone Lake (they're a company up your way in WI). The folks convinced me to spend a bit extra and go with the Aerostich Roadcrafter jacket (I've since picked up the Bohn back protector that goes w/ the Aerostich ). As you noted, the nylon jackets offer better foul weather protection. They also fit in more readily when you pull up somewhere.
